How did Button Mash get so popular?

How did Button Mash get so popular? I know he's not as popular as he used to be, but why was he so popular?

I don't get it, what exactly mad him so popular compared to other colts like Shady Daze? I don't dislike Button Mash, I think he's fairly adorable, but what managed to make him so popular?

As far as I can tell, it was a combination of good animation, funny writing and a character that was just silly enough to be believable. Also his mom, although the only secondary character, did a pretty good job of portraying a "cool adult" archetype.

I think the thing that originally made him standout was the fact that he was first seen playing a video game. There are a lot of gamers in the fandom so Jan Animations took him and ran with it. Their animation and overall production quality rivaled the show's, so yeah, it's not much of a surprise he took off like he did.

I really liked Button Mash because he is a real crybaby and has a hard time separating between the fantasy world and the real world. To be honest, Button Mash DOES remind me of Cartman/Butters from South Park right at the end.

I had no idea this character was even legit until a few months back. I haven't even seen him in the show, or at least remember, but if a BG character such as Derpy can be a widely accepted fan favourite.. I don't see why not!

I couldn't care less for him, and I don't watch/read much fan-base stuff, so I really have no idea.

I saw a Minecraft Parody with a few million hits starting him, so it honestly wouldn't surprise me if that had a role to play in it.

Someone made a funny animation using the character as the star and now he's one of the fandom's most beloved characters

Like everyone else says, JanAnimation's aborted "Button's Adventures" fan mini-series, as well as the "Don't Mine at Night" parody.

I still don't get why the staff keep using those two. Like, do they HONESTLY think people enjoy seeing them? Do they resonate with the target audience because "Lol stupid boys!"?

why?

He initially shows up playing an arcade game in a brief ~2 second blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment in the "Perfect Stallion" song. It's only for all of two seconds, but the idea of video games in Equestria really appeals to people, especially JanAnimations, who single-handedly popularized the character through "Button's Adventures". Now everyone who missed the character the first time knows about him thanks to what Jan did with him.

He does share a model with Shady Daze, who has had more screen time and even a speaking role (as well as another background colt and the pony with the bowling cutie mark in "The Cutie Pox"), however it's what he's doing that sets him apart, similarly to how Vinyl Scratch launched from a single 5-second scene of her operating a DJ booth in "Suited for Success".

  • 5 months later...

People liked the idea of a video game playing character from the show, and like other background characters someone out there (in this case JanAnimations) decided to make content expanding on that.

There were a few pretty entertaining videos made from that which lead to his character becoming popular.

It really started in the song "The Perfect Stallion". That's how he got his name. JanAnimations was the guy who made him famous. Too bad he was C&Ded though...
