What Is Your Favourite Time Period In History?

Recommended Posts

I am  very interested in history, and I spend quite a bit of time reading history books (Especially Horrible Histories) and watching historical television. I saw there wasn't a Topic on this so I decided to make one!

So what is your favourite historical time period? It can be from any time and any place!

Mine would be either Owain Glyndŵr's Welsh rebellion or Republican Rome.

The 20th Century. Why?

Because this was New York City in 1900 (colorized, obviously):

And this was New York City in 1999:

The story of what happened in those short hundred years that spelled the end of the old Victorian Era, and the beginning of a new, globalized world that hinged on the threat of mutually assured destruction, is one that will ring through the ages. The 20th century saw cultural revolution, political upheaval, at technological advancement at previously unthinkable speeds. We saw world wars, untold destruction, crippling uncertainty, marauding super-nations that threatened naught but the apocalypse itself. But in the midst of this all, we learned to embrace life, to live and love freely. We learned the true meaning of freedom in the face of enemies that wanted to take it away. And at the end of it all, the forces of good won out, not on any battlefield, but at the table of peace.

Humanity grew up in the 20th century. We grew wise and mature. In 1914, Britain and Germany alike celebrated at the prospect of (what was then thought to be) a quick, easy war to put in their respective caps. 75 years later, all the world wept in joy that the fallout from that first great war had finally subsided, and looked ahead to a (hopefully) more peaceful future.

The Industrial Revolution is personally one of my favorites. All those chaps making their marvelous machines. Yet their is an undertone to this, all the poverty and poor ness of some of the lower-class. It is rather interesting.

I'm stuck between Ancient Mesopotamia, the Roman Empire, the Dark Ages, Feudal Japan, or World War II. I'm a History nut, and I just find those 5 subjects to be seriously fascinating.

French Renaissance era.

Why?

Because France was one of the leading countries in the Renaissance when it came to creative innovations and art. The architecture from that period is beautiful (les Chateaux de la Loire) and so is the noble fashion. France outlined the standards of beauty and fashion in Western Renaissance Europe and some of those standards to this day still exist. Colours, showing certain social archetypes became prominent as well as the length of your hair and dress, which for that time, was relatively new and exciting.

And of course, artists originating from France such as Jean Clouet, Francois Clouet, Ambroise Dubois and Claude Dereut popped up everywhere, showing their beautiful, artistic skills.

Also I have an obsession with France so yeah.

As society is always making progress, and for the most part is becoming smarter, wiser, less pugnacious, and more tolerant (notwithstanding that extremists and the merely stubborn/stupid, that, to be fair, have always existed and are merely taking advantage of new instruments of destruction and communication (especially communication)), this current era is the best.  (Of course, it's yet to be seen whether we'll keep it that way.)

However, I've got quite a preference for the Early 20th Century (which I'll define broadly from the Gay Nineties [1890s, obviously, though it wasn't all that happy] to the beginning of WWII), mostly because

1) the music was great (I'm a sucker for ragtime/early jazz/Tin Pan Alley styles of composition, and it appears to be the last time the (mainstream) public imagination regarded the composer (or at least his/her role) on an equal plane with the artist),

2) philosophy started to care more about the language used to express propositions (especially if you're in the analytic school) and the experiential and contextual aspects of inquiry (especially if you're in the continental school) rather than a pretension to discover "truth", both of which have done much good to clarify ends and encourage us to be more critical of ourselves (though this certainly has its roots in Kant and even Hume).

3) Pretty much the whole structure of modern society really took off here, namely the rise of the middle class and its emphasis on job security and education as the most important political force (at least where real democracy existed) and the wider introduction of such bedrocks of modern society such as fractional reserve banking, urban planning, and the welfare state in general.  Seeing the development here is quite striking from both a philosophical and practical perspective.

Can I say the current one? I like all the progress we've made so far, and history doesn't interest me that much (I'm more interested in the future).

My favorite probably has to be the medieval ages. But I kinda like them all, lol. It's all so interesting to me. Roman times were interesting... same with reniassance (gustavus adolphos FTW) And of course the early 1900s and how hopelessly inevitable the two world wars were.

Feudal Japan, the 1700's, and the Romans.

Feudal Japan had such rich history, advances in the arts, warfare, a new clan becoming the Shogun, a lot of things happened.

The 1700's had many wars, advances, changes in society and new nations to emerge. It's a ripe era before the 1800's.

The Romans were one of the greatest empires of all times in history, what's not great about that.
