(Instrumental) The Creatures of the Night

Heyo everypony :) Here's a song I've been working on for a while entitled 'The Creatures of the Night'. It's an instrumental tune inspired primarily by music from various Castlevania games. I do hope you enjoy. ^^

Also, super special thanks to Huussii from DeviantArt for letting me use their amazing art for this video!

It's okay...but really repetative. You're only using the i and the VI, which I keep saying, don't limit yourself to only two chords, because then that takes away the possibilities of this piece. Even though you were extending your bars, that still won't do it.

Here are some progression suggestions

i-VI-III-VII

i-VII-VI-V

i-III-iv-V

i-iv-VI-VII

In terms of organization and order, I would suggest you start out with that solo sawtooth minus the bass line in a filter. Because electronic music is usually divided into bars of 8, you can start to sweep out the melody line on the 5th bar of the phrase. By the beginning of the next phrase, the bass line should come in.

A few bridges would work for this song because really, you're sticking with the tonic key of c minor. On the bridge, you can perhaps start on the iv of c minor, which is f minor. You can then go from there doing somthing like this

iv-iv-III-ii-V

alternatively

iv-VI-III-ii-V

You have many possibilities here, because you're working with interchangeable chords, specifically, the iv and VI and the i and III.

In the piano part, you could've left the percussion out because it seems to be a bit of a fight. Also, to make it a bit more sinister, you could sweep the piano in and out of a phaser or even a flanger. The piano just seems a bit dry. Adding some chorus or other modulation effects would give it that nice tone that would fit for this piece.

For the end, a progression of the last bar could be

i-VI-iv-V-i

On the last i, you could put an echo in double time, since your piece is running at about 105 bpm (beats per minute). This would make the echo speed 210bpm.

All in all, this piece has a ton of potential, but I feel you didn't take advantage of that...

3/10

Please don't be disappointed. I'm a musician of 16 years and can help you with whatever you don't understand.

Thanks a bunch for the advice ^^ Though I'm a musician of eleven years, I'll admit that I didn't really understand most of what you posted. I've never really worried about the technicalities of music; which chords I'm hitting; what notes I'm playing; what the progression could be; what key I'm in--I've always just done what I've thought sounded good and stuck with that. One could see that as me limiting myself, but I personally see it more as doing what I am comfortable with and what I enjoy. The moment sheet music or anything like that gets involved, I immediately lose interest. It's like riding a bike. Do I want to read a manual about riding a bike, or do I want to go outside and ride the bike? Sure, the manual might teach me a fair bit and make me a better rider, but at the end of the day, for me, that's not the point; it's just to have fun with it.

However, if you were willing to disambiguate on what you said, I could do my best to try and understand, as I do appreciate good advice and criticism. ^^  I must warn you though that I'm a very slow learner--I might even go as far as to call myself obstinate.

Hey, if you have a Skype, I can tutor you in chords and progressions. It's extremely important if you want to create pieces that captivate your audience. And really, what sounds good to you, may not sound good to others, so I feel that having chords and progressions under your belt, would make it so that it would sound good regardless to who listens to it.

Sure do! I'm heading to bed, though. I'll PM you my username and perhaps we can start up a call tomorrow. As I said though, I am a very slow learner. I've had tutors in real life and barely managed to learn anything from them.

in my opinion once you delve in to theory you lose some of the fun of music i like learning just enough to know what plausible scale here   what chords i'm playing there

You and me are in the same boat, then ^^ if you need help with any parts of the song, just let me know. For now I'm off to bed, so in the meantime, take care and good luck ^^

On second thought, after having a night's rest, I'm going to politely decline your offer. :) If you still wish to give me assistance, direct me towards some videos or websites and I'll get to them when I can.

Okay. You can google up progressions and cadences for extra help. But if those don't help, you can always come back to me.
