If you are into dark-themed stories i REALLY recommend Tokyo Ghoul

If you like a "casual" shounen anime, watch Fairy Tail

If you like "monster-hunting post apocaliptic" stuff like i do, watch God Eater, it's a really recent anime that i think deserves a chance to climb the popularity rank

If you are up to watching a veeery long story, watch Naruto... srsly it's worth it

If you like medival-fantasy themed animes, i recommend Nanatsu no Taizai/The Seven Deadly Sins

So, please recommend animes you think are worth watching, i watch almost all genres i think...

Anime that I would recommend would be:

If you like random, funny type of anime, I would recommend "Lucky Star" and "Nichijou"

If you like a nice slice of life type of anime, I would recommend "Clannad," "Little Busters," and "Kanon 2006."

If you like a good romance type of anime, I would recommend "Amagami SS."

If you like random, funny type of anime, I would recommend "Lucky Star"

I would not recommend Lucky Star for someone who haven't really watched a lot of slice of life before as they're gonna get pretty bored quickly since not much is happening. If you have no problems with this then Lucky Star is awesome but if you want a faster paced anime in a similar style with more happening I'd recommend Azumanga Daioh instead :)

Some animes I'd recommend:

- Noragami: a relatively new anime. Has great characters and story and would be great to watch so you're caught up for the second season coming soon :)

- Haikyuu!!: the first sports anime I've seen so far. All of the characters are unique and interesting and it somehow makes you get excited for a sport like volleyball of all things :P

- Parasyte - The Maxim: think Tokyo Ghoul and it's along the same lines. While I love Tokyo Ghoul to death, I find that this is far more interesting while it may not be quite as dark. My favourite anime ever :D

- Terror in Resonance: a very dramatic and mysterious anime. You will cry at the, just saying

- Guilty Crown: I haven't even gotten that far in the show, barely halfway. But everything about the anime is amazing and I think it might even rival Parasyte for me. From the plot to the characters to even the art style, everything is done near perfectly :pinkie:

Really interesting and I love the sounds of this thread. Right now I would recommend Magical Madoka, its a really bizarre magical girl show that pits magical girls against each other for wishes, then I would recommend the classic Deathnote as well as Ouran High School Host Club

Guilty Crown: The story is awesome (well on paper), the animantion is done by Production I.G and its a fun watch.

Steins;Gate: Time travel, Okabe Rinatro and amazing cast plus did I mention time travel?!

Akame ga Kill: A good 'killing' action series set in a medival-ish type setting.

Kill la Kill: Watch the first 3 episodes, then watch it even more.

Durarara!!: Amazing in every way, storylines are very good, and Izaya and Shizuo is all you need did I forget to mention its the same writer from Baccano!

Code Geass: Self explained, just watch it

Deadman Wonderland: A heaven of blood and gore this show, twisted but still very good also the powers are awesome

Fate/Zero: Watch this before Fate/stay night, watch the dub and just melt in this amazing peice by Gen Urobuchi (watch this before fate/stay night UBW)

Psycho-Pass: Another peice from Gen Urobuchi with sci-fi, gore and ethics put in a battle for what right, and what's wrong. Also main villain I think is amazing

Death Note: If you havent, just watch it

Tokyo Ghoul: If you want a errie and bloody-ish story of surival and tear-jerking sadness well watch this but the overall story in my opinon is well... not to amazing but a very good watch.

GANGSTA: Yes, its called that, its got tension and a ambiguous gotham type background and its got action and tension to boot

Seraph of the End: A recent anime adaption last season (spring). Vampires, secrets although it does take time before things start heating up.

Blood Bloackade Battlefront (Kekkai Sensen): If you seen my old profile picture its from the show, its over-the-top, main villains are ambiguous 'Kings' and well its awesome when it comes to comedy and action. Also the dub is awesome!

K (or K-project)- Awesome premise, story goes a bit slow, the sequel film is a awesome addition to watch, but tv series wise the show is good, but as good as its sequel film, also upcoming second season this fall.

Hellsing Ultimate: Just watch it all the blood the gore. The pure violence that is Alucard, its just a fun bloody awesome show

The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan: A slightly slow moving plot at first but the final arc of this romance is the best, it works like a 'normal' slice of life romance comedy.... But its a nice watch. (All suggestions is stuff that I have watched or currently watching) Who watches as much anime as me? anyone? (gif is from Fate/Zero) and my latest profile picture is Gilgamesh from Fate/stay night UBW by the way, sorry for the long list... but yeah, that's it pretty much

I will give you my most favorite Anime with the addition that obviously all suggestions here are merely subjective and it is for you to decide whether you like it yourself or simply don't. Just make sure to give any Anime, that seems interesting enough for you to pick it up, at least 3 episodes to fully check it out.

In my opinion the best anime by far is Steins;Gate. It's a drama and action filled anime about time travel and very interesting. I have to say that you probably need like 5 episodes until you get hooked completely since it's a bit slow to start. I dropped it after like 2 episodes when I first came across it and it is now my absolutely favorite anime, keep that in mind.

The Fate Series including Fate/Zero and Fate/Stay Night (Unlimited Blade Works is the remake that is a lot better but follows a different route, Fate being a visual novel originally). It's an action anime with very stunning drawing style and animation. Nothing more to say really except it's about fighting and the holy grail.

Sword Art Online (II) is an anime about Virtual Reality MMORPGs and features interesting characters and a lot of action. Another anime like that would be Log Horizon which focuses more on the MMORPG aspect and goes a little more into detail there. Also worth checking out.

InuYasha will always have a special palce in my heart since I just to watch it when I was growing up. It's an adventure anime but I guess many people already know something about InuYasha so I don't need to tell you much more. It's quite long with 200 episodes and it sometimes feels kind of boring or the characters feel a little stupid but that's part of its charme^^ I do recommend it nonetheless!

Technically not an anime but close in drawing style is Avatar: The last airbender or The Legend of Korra. Also really known and famous but worth mentioning. Probably my favorite show ever taking everything else into account, close to Steins;Gate but better. I just love everything about it, the action, the humor and the lessons learned.

Other Anime I enjoyed include: Angel Beats (Drama, Action, SoL), Death Note (Thriller, Drama), Elfen Lied (Warning: Gore; Action, Drama), Guilty Crown (Action, Drama, Fantasy), Hellsing (Warning: Gore; Action, Horror), K or K-Project (Action), Mirai Nikki (Thriller, Action, Drama), The Devil is a Part-Timer (Comedy, Fantasy), Zetsuen no Tempest (Magic/Fantasy,Action).

Sure :D I know some pretty good anime!

  • Cromartie High School: An anime about a regular person who gets sent to a high school full of delinquents for one bad thing he did... Also attending the school is a sapient robot that only 2 students know is a robot, a gorilla, and FREAKING FREDDIE MERCURY! A great anime if you like random crap like Bobobo-Bobo-Bobo
  • Marchen Awakens Romance (AKA MAR): A geeky middle school student gets sent to another dimension that he has been dreaming about for months. Now he must fight against the evil Chess Pieces to free the land, and find his way home
  • Boku no Pico: Seriously, don't watch this one. Anyone that knows what this is knows that I put it here as a joke, so I'm writing this now because not everyone will realize the joke and I'm not a heartless monster that would trick people into watching the anime equivalent of "2 girls 1 cup"
  • FLCL: My favorite anime and another good one for random crap... Yet there's a deeper plot to it all when you really dig into it. It would take too long to explain here, but the reader's digest version without spoilers is an alien comes to Earth and hits a boy named Naota in the head with her bass guitar. Ever since then, random crap starts growing out of his head and turning into giant fighting mechs.
  • Sorceress Stabber Orphan: If you watch this series, please don't watch the next season (Orphan: Revenge.... it's worse than Dragonball GT). Sorceress Stabber Orphan is pretty good, though   It's about a magician and his apprentice traveling the world, attempting to free his love from a curse that turned her into a terrible dragon.
  • Blue Exorcist: The devil has a child, but before he can raise him to be the anti-christ, the child is intercepted by a group of priests and raised to be an exorcist. Now, he must control his satanic powers to stop the very demons attempting to kill and recruit him... including Lucifer himself.
  • The Devil is a Part Timer?!: Exactly what it sounds like... The devil from another dimension is banished to Earth, where he loses a considerable amount of power and is forced to get a minimum wage job at McDonalds.... Hilarity ensues. If you liked "Invader Zim" at all, you'll definately get a kick out of this!

I know that most of these are pretty dang obscure, but they really deserve way more attention, and I'd recommend them all any day (except Boku no Pico)!

Ergo Proxy- It's a techno steam-punk world of awesome, although the premise is hard to wrap your mind around, but its an awesome show to watch.

Blue Exorcist: Child of the demon, Rin Okumura wants to kill the his demon farther (what ever it takes) although it doesnt follow the manga (well not all of it) also Lucifer rectruits him to the Vaticant. What more would you ask for?!

Devil is a pert-timer- The Devil is stuck on Earth, and now has to work at Mcdonalds, a good comedy if i say so myself

Gureen Langan- One of Studio Trigger's best and most well known shows, watch it and take it ALL in.

SAO AND SAO2- Try those out, see if you like'em season 2 is far better though, well the first halfs are better than the rest of the show, but try it out and see for yourself

Trigun- One of the classic's set in the western steampunk world you will love this one, and watch the movie Badlands Rumble (if you so wish) its awesome, although Tri-gun has some "dated" animation.... but not the film

Cowboy-Bebop- Another classic watch that set in a similar world like in Tri-gun, Spike Spiegel is awesome and he is on a mission (for more suggestions, go back to my older post here)

Kaze no Stigma (Stigma of the wind) - An awesome yet very missed show (not many people heard of this show is what I mean) its about a kid who becames the retainer of the Wind God, and will restore his family honour (just watch the show) the gif is from the show

I used to be big into anime like you. Then I took an arrow to the knee started watching My Little Pony. I'm getting back into the swing of things.

From what I've watched so far:

-Rosario + Vampire: Guy goes to a new school. He doesn't realize this school is in an alternate dimension, and all the students there are monsters in disguise, including the cute vampire girl he literally runs into.

-Comic Party Revolution. Slice of life story about a group of quirky oktaku friends whose lives revolve around the monthly comic convention, whether they be doujinshi (fan comic artists), cosplayers or con staff and all the shenanigans they get involved in. Fun, heart warming stuff.

-Princess 9. (It's been a while so lemme see if I recall this.) A corporate exec tries to get an all girls team to a national game. But first she need to assemble it. So she finds a wise cracking coach,  a sweet girl with a mean arm, a skillful tennis player, a star track runner turned delinquent, and I don't' remember much else as it was only a 5 episode sampler on Anime Network.

-Jing: King of the bandits. If you like the visual style of Soul Eater, or kinda like Nightmare before Christmas, you'll love Jing. Story about a slick thief and his talking crow who commit high stakes thefts in a fantasy land, but usually with an ulterior motive behind them.

-Hand Maid May. A simple living computer genius working on his latest invention gets his work sabotaged by a rival though a virus, which causes him to mistakenly order a miniature android maid. Now the corporation that made her is sending other androids to repossess her, with mixed results.  A few subtle terminator references if you can catch them.

-Kiddy Grade. Two genetically altered agents, a fun loving, easy going girl and her prim and proper partner, are sent by their organisation to deal with crime lords, mercenaries, and civil unrest across space in humanity's distant future.

-Otoboku (I'm only a few episodes into this myself) A young tires to fulfill his grandfathers last wish: To attend the same all girls school his mother did. How? By dressing up like one, and subsequently becoming the most popular "girl" in school.

-Ronin Warriors. (Toonami kids will remember this one.) A band of warriors defends modern day earth using the forces of nature to battle the supernatural Dynasty and it's attempts to conquer earth.

-The Third: The Girl with the Blue Eye.  A sword swinging Mercenary girl and her AI tank tackle jobs on a post apocalyptic earth ruled by an alien race called The Third.

-Midori Days.  The toughest punk in school somehow gets his right hand replaced with the miniaturized body of a young girl who's secretly had a crush on him.

-Karin.  High Schooler Karin is secretly a vampire. But even more surprising, is that rather than drink blood, her body produces excess of it. So she looks for "victims" to transfer her blood to via bite. But if she can't find somebody in time, then all that blood comes out via fountainous nose bleeds.

-Needless.  An unknown super-weapon is dropped on Japan, reducing an area in the center of it to a barren wasteland known as The Black Spot. From the quarantined spot rise individuals with superpowers known as The Needless. The Simian corporation attempts to invade the black spot to harvest them for experiments. The cross paths with the younger brother of a resistance leader, and Adam Blade, a lewd, perverted "Priest" with a Lolita complex, who just may be the most powerful needless of all. (warning: contains lots of fan service).

-Monster Musume. (Now I haven't watched this, but I have read vol.1 of the manga, and it's highly entertaining.) Earth and a mythical realm have made contact and mystical beings now walk and live peacefully among humans. Among them is a guy who is saddled with providing for a Lamia (a girl with the lower body of a snake), and later, a harpy and a centaur, whom all have the hots for him. Problem is, if he does anything with them, he'll be punished by inter dimensional law. Easier said than done.

-Is this a zombie?  A high schooler wonders the nights alone, finding out that he was killed and is now a zombie. But his days get weirder when he saves a magical space girl from an attack and acquires her powers, as well as meeting a vampiric ninja and the grim reaper who brought him back to life, as the defend the earth from aliens and demons, all the while trying he solve the mystery of his murder.

-Spice and Wolf. A traveling merchant comes across a naked girl with wolf ears and a tail, claiming to be the ancient harvest deity of the village he was visiting. She offers to assist him in his economic ventures if he returns her to her home of the north. And thus, a partnership is born among turbulent economic trials and villages converting to the newer faiths.

-Wolf Children. A college woman falls in love with a loner visiting her campus, learning that he is in fact a werewolf. After her lovers death, the woman must now raise her shape shifting wolf children on her own, keeping their condition a secret from the world as well as the children themselves struggling with the issues faced between being wolf and man.

-Rurouni Kenshin. (another favorite of the Toonami generation. How have you not heard of this?) In 1867 Japan, A lone samurai takes up residence with a doujo sensei and her student, meeting new friends and rivals as he battles corrupt officials, rebel warriors and old enemies from his past in the radically reformed Japan, while keeping his vow of never killing again.

That's all I got.

for now...

May as well hop aboard and get some recommendations from you guys.

Anime is one of those things that I know I should get into, but there is too many to start off with. But based on the cartoons that I like, many of my favourites tend to be plot-driven, character-driven or contain many mysteries that tie in the overall arc. My favourite cartoons also tend to be the Fantasy genre, but on occasion some of them will also be of the Drama, Mystery or Adventure genres.

So based on my taste in cartoons, what would you recommend me to start off with? I was thinking of starting with Puella Magi Madoka Magica, but there is so much to choose from that it's almost overwhelming.

I'd recommend Bleach if you haven't seen it. The show is filled with intense action worthy of DBZ only with swords, it's got comedy in all the right places for some relief, and the plot is really good filled with good twists.

One of the best anime ever made, Monster, I highly suggest it. Its a mature anime, and I don't mean its full of titties and violence or anything, I mean its a really good engrossing story that will make you want to know more and more about the story with each episode, even if the first episode or two is a bit slow. It really pulls you in once the story gets rolling. Its a mystery thriller set in 1990s Germany.

Sure :D I know some pretty good anime!

  • Cromartie High School

This anime is great, the main character doesn't stay normal for long!

  • The Devil is a Part Timer?!

One of the better animes of recent times. Good choice.

-Monster Musume. (Now I haven't watched this, but I have read vol.1 of the manga, and it's highly entertaining.) This anime is pure fan service.
