Stereotypes You Have About Other Music

Denim&Venöm

Recommended Posts

We all have opinions or ideas about the other kinds of music that we don't listen to.

Things like rap is all about drugs, being a gangsta and getting that booty.

That country is about beer, guns, 'murica and Jesus.

That pop is about falling in love, breaking up, getting back together, and partying it up.

That heavy metal is all about Satan and killing people.

As well as other stereotypes like all rap is auto tuned, pop artists don't write their own lyrics and all metal singers do is scream.

So what stereotypes do you hold about other peoples music?

And also, I encourage people here to respond to one another and prove each other wrong. Heck, use my examples and try to prove me wrong (except for heavy metal. I'm more than familiar with the genre).

Let's all broaden each others horizons here, starting with the world of music.

Go!

People just listen to stuff because it's what they hear on the radio, or because they "like the artist". Likewise, people hate Justin Bieber songs because it's JB. Just ... who cares who wrote a song? Listen to music because it sounds good and is emotionally meaningful. In my case, this often leads me to Japayork, and then people think I'm insane.

How about...A song about a Girl who's sick of sterotypes and being used by guys tells them to scew off and looks inside herself to change.

("Just a silly little thing/That's all you've ever seen/But there's so much more to me")

A song that encourages women to stay strong even when things get rough. (AKA: Theme for the Fruits Basket ladies (Mostly Akito))

A song that makes fun of celebrities. (Do I have talent? Well, no/These days you don't really need it/Thanks to reality shows)

Follow your dreams, "Even [when they] break your heart"

And of course...Murder.

I LOVE country music and even though, yes I do see a pattern in a lot of it, I also appreciate and look for things like these where it's expanded beyond "pretty girl get in my truck"/"Let's go out and drink beer" and "Man isn't america great?"

Almost every country song sounds the same to me. They really do. I know that not all of it sounds exactly alike, but it is so weird how similar many of them are. Hearing country songs is always a waiting game on the key parts that are in 95% of all country songs and I have heard countless songs that have the same exact ending in terms of how it sounds. That might not be a 'steretype' though.

If I had to think of one more accurate, it is that country music is always about 'yeah! Relatable stuff!' and the stuff always seems to be American cliches.

All reggae songs sound the same to me. A lot of people claim this, but there's a really good reason for that; just click randomly on the seek bar of this video and you'll see what I mean.

Screamo is basically screaming in the microphone, that's it!.

But would this not be debate?

As a musician I don't try to put labels on things because it limits what I can expose myself to. I also grew up listening to a wide catalog thanks to my mother and older brother. Then I worked at a music store chain for 5 or so years and acquired a taste for what ever tickles my ears. But my niche will always be hardcore and metal. And people always say "I hate that screamy stuff" or it all sounds the same. Which yeah metal is repetitive but that's why I like it!

Ohhh yay, lets expose how closed-minded we all really are! =P

I'm going to put out my full closed-mindedness here, and say things I would never usually dare to say, since that's what this topic is asking for... >.< Go ahead and prove me wrong if you can. Lol.

Country music is either depressing or irritating. When I say 'depressing', I mean every single aspect. I listen to and love a lot of 'depressing' music, but the kind of depressing that is country is unbearable.

Electronic music genres in general - including Brony music - are dry. Some like whatever Skrillex is just obnoxious sound to my ears.

Metal is either cheesy, full of screaming, or both.

Violin concerti from the Romantic period are boring. I wonder if this is what people hear when they think of Classical Music, and is why they think Classical Music is boring? =P

Okay so, I'm truthfully a rocker at heart, but because of my country area, I know country music well enough.

This will probably confirm your country stereotype.

I try not to hold onto stereotypes with music. It's always going to come down to individual artists, sometimes even down to song.

I still can't help but hold on to a few though. Like how Christian music is terrible music because they focus so much on the worship that they forget to put the music in there. I am aware that's the entire point of Christian music but that doesn't make most of the songs I hear on a daily basis sound any kind of good. It's worse than the shittiest pop music in a lot of ways.

Rap is nothing but promoting violence, drugs, sex, treating women like trash, and talking extremely fast (and autotune too). It's too irritating to me except for a SELECTED few that I've grown to be tolerable with. It's really a negative impact to the music world and today's society.

Classical music is good sleeping music to me.

This is pretty much my response. Obviously there are lots of exceptions to this(For example I love the Anarchy Reigns/Madworld OSTs and they're 90% rap), but most of the time I can't help but feel this way

Oh, not really. I like John Denver, and don't really think of him as country. I think of him as more of a combination of country and folk.

Like this, definitely way more folk than country:

For the record, I tend to like country related genres. However, country itself is unbearable.

I have to admit! prior to meeting a ton of people in this fandom that enjoy it, I was really creeped out by metal heads. To me, about 1993 it became all about screaming and anger. I love the '80s pop-metal of groups like Def Leppard, Quiet Riot, Twisted Sister or Motley Crüe, but I just can't get behind anything after about 1989.

I also used to detest rap, but then I stopped listening to lyrics and started to just enjoy the rhythm, and I'll admit that I now see the appeal. I wished they'd stop promoting violence and drunkenness, though.

Modern country I still can't get, on the whole, I think mainly because I fought hard not to become what my environment was as a kid, and my mother is a country fanatic. Also, I wanted to stand out in a population who thought the trinity consisted of Chevy Trucks, Jesus, and George Strait, in that order. But I can appreciate a lot of the stuff that's 10+ years old! and I have to admit that Florida Georgia Line's stuff is generally catchy.

The final genre I'm going to touch on is EDM. I had never even heard of this stuff prior to joining the fandom at large, and while I'm not very deep into it, I can definitely see the appeal of it. I have to admit, I have become very partial to Skrillex's Cinema and Bangarang since being introduced to the genre.

I hate to admit it, but I really think that all pop music really is just about teenage love, partying, and "molly." Prove me wrong by showing me a pop song about the death of a loved one, disease, or corrupt government. I'd love to be proven wrong.

I've listened to rap before, so I know that not all of it is about "gangsta" stuff. A lot of them tell interesting stories that can be rather hard to listen to. It's just not a genre I like, but I do have respect for it.

Country is where I'm split. I've heard really good country songs about world issues, loved ones losing themselves to drug addiction, and standing up for yourself. However, it seems that more and more country songs are coming out that are just about partying. Those I don't care for.

It depends on the genre, I suppose. All genres of music have the ability to tell stories, whether those stories are worth telling is the real issue.

My question is: Are they a "Christian band" because their members are Christians or because their music is actually Christianity-based? Because there's a massive difference and the kind I'm talking about is specifically the stuff that's about Christian values.

Then allow me to defy both for you, for both of you.

Like I said: Most that I hear regularly. I live near a church and my mother is always listening to Christian music. I am aware that there is other genres out there for it and those aren't the ones I'm talking about.

Plus, you know, this is a topic about stereotypes. I think we all know that stereotypes have truth to them but know they aren't 100% true. :P

The stereotype that everyone who likes genres besides rap think and believe that rap isn't and can't be classified as music.

lol
