Opinions on Smoking

Smoking -> possible addiction -> even more smoking -> start of serious health problems -> Cancer -> Death.

Simple as that. Truly sorry if it may offend some smokers here, but it's the sad truth. And you know it already probably.

I don't smoke, but both of my parents do, and sometimes they smoke close enough to me that I can get uncomfortable with it.

Smoking literally does nothing good for your body. It becomes addictive and very harmful. I never plan on smoking in my life. I fear cigarettes and the possibility that it could end my life. I don't want to die because of something like smoking.

Now, it's understandable to do it once or twice, and never do it again. I understand if it's a one time thing. But once it becomes addictive, it probably needs to stop. I've never known a situation where a smoking addiction actually helped anyone.

Smoking is arguably the worst habit you could develop, considering the massively increased risk of lung cancer and other health problems that will likely develop later in life.

I detest cigarettes, to be quite honest. I am not personally offended if anyone chooses to smoke, but it is a choice that I strongly disagree with. I am elated to say that many people are beginning to agree with this position, and even my brother has managed to stop smoking. :mlp_rarity:

I really don't care if you smoke or not. It's your body, do what you want with it. Personally, I don't smoke and do not feel the need, and I'd rather people not do it. But if we're gonna have freedom of choice, one of those choices is the choice to do things that are unhealthy.

It’s not the nicest habit in the world. And besides the enormous expense and horrible health issues involved, it’s not pleasant for the people around a smoker. The smell is not only disagreeable to lots of people but unhealthy for them as well. Even when someone isn’t puffing away, the smell of cigarettes stays on their clothes, in their hair and on their breath. As for me, I actually like the smell of certain kinds of cigarettes but would never even consider smoking one myself.

I am really not a fan of it. My parents both smoke, as well as my one of my closest friends. While I can't make their decisions for them, it bothers me to the point of feeling very uncomfortable when they do it.

I think it is very unhealthy for you and those around you, as there is a thing called secondhand smoking. Smoking not only gives you a nasty cough, is an addiction, and damages your lungs and health, but it can also cause lung cancer. One of my relatives actually got lung cancer from smoking, and she died from cancer, so I have a negative view towards smoking.

I hate smoking and I believe smoking in public areas should be illegal because it harms those around you. I got the corner of my eye burnt by a cigarette when I was 3 because I walked next to someone holding a cigarette at my eye-level :eww:

Just don't do it. Smoke is such an unattractive smell and it kills the vibe a lot. It's also bad for your lungs and it give you bad breath.

Now smoking weed is alright, as long as it's just a couple of times per week I think. I also support medical marijuana.

I'm strongly against smoking (cigarettes, weed, vaping, everything. Especially weed. Don't do drugs). It smells terrible (with the exception of vaping, I guess. A cloud of birthday cake vapor floating down the street could be worse), it's addictive (which leads to a lot of money lost for no real reason), it's unhealthy for you, and it's unhealthy for the people around you. It should really be illegal in public places, with the exception of some dedicated smoking areas. I don't think it should be legal to smoke in a car or house with children, either.

Also, I never understood the concept of inhaling literal smoke. Why would anyone want to do that?

I don't do it. But the anti-smoking campaigns are unhelpful, and there are worse things you can do. I have sympathy for those who do because they probably have stressful lives and need relief where they can get it. I would be open to trying weed, though.

I think it brings a temporary bliss....until it kills you of course. Like how Icarus fly higher because reaching to the sun makes him happy and well..you get the idea. I guess achieving happiness just for while can be a bitch sometime.

Smoker here.

I know I know I know. Smoking gives cancer and whatnot. Eating meat does too. Drinking water does too. Seriously, if we were to annalyze each biochemical reaction we expose ourselves to, even BREATHING is harmful for our health!

I see a lot of people calling out on smokers due the cancer. Guys, being on a campfire is even worse than smoking a cigarette. I don't see people losing their heads about people doing campfires. Eating hot food is even worse than that, more so if you're eating instant noodles. Soy sauce gives you cancer as well. Don't believe me? Go check stomach cancer incidencies and deaths caused by it at Asian countries where the norm is to eat things really hot and soy sauce is part of their cuissine. People dying of stomach cancer before they hit 40? Why is that not a health concern? There are studies on the correlation of soy sauce and cancer (sounds like a joke, but you'd be surprised).

And what about vaping? Lately, there's been a lot of noise about vaping people who have been developing severe health problems. However, given there are no studies as if vaping is the true cause, nopony talks about it. And let me tell you, vaping should most likely be just as harmful, if not even more than smoking tobacco. We don't really know what sort of things vape fluid has in it. But from what I know, most aromatic compounds are derivatives of Benzene, and benzene is (yeah, not as much as Toluene but still quite a lot) cancerigenous. And given vaping is pretty much about vaporizing fluids through (usually) ultrasonic waves, and given most aromatic compounds are more likely to dissolve in organic solvents, I have the feeling most of the vaping fluids might have benzene in their formula. They should be oily, organic bases. But even if it was not benzene, I doubt breathing vaporized oils is a good idea. Oils are less likely to be expelled from your body.

I've seen a lot of comments here stating how really bad smoking is for your health. I agree, there are many ugly things related to smoking. However, heavy smokers are the ones who develop those sicknesses in short time frames (being that like 10 years). In the first place, if you smoke a pack a day, man, you really should get some therapy. It's probably not the addiction to the cigarette itself, but deeper emotional problems that drive you to overdo the smoking. And I know, second hand smoking is awful, I myself avoid smoking near people. But smoking in public areas being totally illegal? Shouldn't using internal combustion engines in public places be illegal too? I mean, there's not such a thing as a perfect combustion, and while muffles are meant to reduce nocive emisions from combustion, the gases released are still really bad for the health. If the concern is breathing toxic wastes, then we should take down almost all combustions that use complex compounds as fuel. In most countries smoking anywhere indoors is illegal, and you guys want smoking outdoors to be illegal too?

I just don't know, guys. It happened to me several times at campus. We had a few, small outdoor areas for smokers. I was scolded by people for smoking at the smoking areas. Like, what the hell? If you don't want to deal with my smoke, well, there's plenty of space all around campus. Why come here at the fartest corner of the parking lot to bother me when I came here to be alone and not bother non-smokers?

So yeah, smoking is bad. I won't recommend it unless you despise your life a lot. If you do, well, suit yourself. Can it be relaxing? Yeah, it can, but there are many other things you could do to relax. Is it a health risk? Yes, but is not the biggest health risk out there. Addictive? Yes, but many other things can be addictive without needing to have addictive substances in themselves. Is it a bad habit? Yes, but how bad it is depends on the customs and manners of a society. Let's take for instance one really innofensive custom you can see at China (according to some NatGeo documentals and programs). If you clean your plate when you're a guest at a dinner, you're being a jerk. You're supposed to leave some left overs on it. Cleaning your plate could be a bad habit there. But at least in my country (Mexico), you're supposed to leave the least left overs possibles since you're supposed to be grateful for having something to eat, else it means you didn't like the food and that is seen as a bad habit (and considered rather crass). So how much of a bad habit it is depends on who do you ask.

My opinion on smoking? It's bad, but I wouldn't drop it for my own sake.

And while it may sound like I'm just spitting bull to excuse myself, when I'm talking chemistry I know what I'm talking about. I spent 8 years studying to get my degree and be a specialist. You can believe me not and go investigate if you will. Actually, I would encourage you guys to do so.

Smoking absolutely disgusts me. Since I have a very sensitive nose, I tend to want to sneeze when I smell any type of smoke. That's why I try to stay as far away from smokers. Secondly, it is one of the most dangerous and legal substances in existence. The only other substance that is legal and even more dangerous is alcohol.

I don't mind people smoking:lie:just as long they don't puff those black smokes at me and if they do that while I walk behind them,I just hold my breath a minuted or two that's all:mlp_maud:and I also they won't ban them, just look at what happened during prohibition when they tried banning alcohol

I don't mind other people doing it once in a while in the privacy of their own front/back whatever yard. Otherwise, they're threatening the health of everyone else around them.

Though I wouldn't suggest even that. It's totally unsafe, and an addiction to it can really f*** a person up.

Yucky I dun wanna be near them

Like if u wanna do so okay (very bad for u and yes ppl should help them overcome addiction) but the fact is that many people smoke them at the sides of buildings on narrow streets on both sides of the street. As there arent any places for them to go. This means it's almost impossible to avoid them and you get the impact too. If they really have to smoke there they should turn inward not smoke onto the street. It doesnt help there are tons of ppl doing it. You can't always walk on the road or cross over ya know. I think smoking on the side of a office building should be banned just for public health reasons. People should smoke privately in their own areas or outdoors away from others. It is a form of pollution. Im kinda glad im at home now cuz i can avoid such stuff. It was disguting and unhealthy walking around and getting constantly infumigated. :c

Electronic cigarettes are jus as bad for the person maybe idk but feel less bad passive inhalation.

It was the cool thing to do in the 1930-1980. Then people discovered people die from it, and it was not so cool anymore. Nowadays, the people that smoke usually smoke for some reason, so it is easy to pinpoint that there is at least a reason.

I don't think anyone starts smoking for flavor or for their own economy (it takes away a huge amount of your money, which is what the tobacco companies want).
