When do you cosplay?

I know that people often cosplay for conventions, but, besides perhaps Halloween, are there other occasions for which people create cosplays? Does anybody just make them at home, take a picture of themselves wearing one, and then post it on deviantART or something, without wearing it at a special event?

Asking just in case I never get the chance to attend a convention.

I hardly cosplay at all. I design a lot of costumes, but they leave much to be desired. So, I just pack them away. I'm hoping to earn enough money to make high quality costumes later, but with school, I can't work as much now.

Depends. :)

Mostly when people talk about cosplay it is for costumes of specific, identifiable characters, so those I do at conventions. Mostly because the audience there will be the only ones who 'get it', and several of the bigger ones offer cash prizes at their masquerades (those usually require skits to go along with them, so they get rather involved). More generic costumes, such as historical outfits and the like, those get worn at renfaires or reenactments. And weddings. I get a lot of call for doing wedding parties in historical outfits.

It used to be at work they would have the occasional morale event with everyone dressing up in costumes, but they haven't had one of those in awhile.

I assume it is not weird to say that I have never cosplayed in my life? :| I would love to, but I don't think I will ever have an appropriate situation to do so. Nor the resources. :P

Neither have I. Welcome to the Never Cosplayed Club! :D

I mostly cosplay at conventions, and I might use one for Halloween if I've got a party to go to. And sometimes at my friend's house, usually when we're making videos for youtube or sometimes just get into cosplay randomly because it's fun :P

I've gone out into the woods and stuff for photoshoots in cosplay though~ Oh and when I went to the midnight release of Avengers Age of Ultron, we did kinda casual Avengers cosplays (wore a Thor T-shirt and tied a red top around me to look like a cape basically XD)! But sometimes they won't let you in if you're in full cosplay at the cinema, like when my friend was Jack Frost from Rise of the Guardians. Kinda awkward :please: But if it's more casual or it's a character who basically wears normal clothes, it's usually okay. So basically yeah, cosplay whenever you feel like it! :pinkie:

I wore Pinkie Pie ears and a tail at BronyCon, if that counts as cosplay. I've also dressed up on Halloween when I was a kid. I'm still thinking about whether or not I should make something for Halloween this year, since I don't know if there's anything I can dress up for, but I might just wear a cosplay/costume of some sort, and walk around a mall or store. I'm hoping I can get into cosplay, since I plan to go to more conventions. Specifically, I'm hoping I can make some ponysuits/mlp fursuits. So far, I'm looking into either Lyra, Derpy, or Colgate.

Other than Halloween and conventions I go to seasonal cosplay gatherings to cosplay and hang out with my con friend without the crowd and the stress. I usually never but on my cosplay just for pictures or sitting at home. They're too much work to put on and I don't want to ruin the costume. I want to make it worth putting it on and wearing it.

Interesting feedback, thanks all for replying.

As much as I'd like to cosplay, I think the reasons for why I never have really boil down to my lack of opportunities, due to my general business with school. Plus I'm an adult, so I dunno if mature adults wearing silly costumes is frowned upon or not.

I've yet to cosplay any character, but I'd likely consider it like any other apparel I wear, with no need for it to be a special occasion. It's no different than wearing my full pirate outfit (long coat, boots, and puffy lace shirt included) to my high school exams.

Personally, I usually plan my cosplays around upcoming conventions, but I don't just wear them there. There are sometimes cosplay contests hosted by game developers/dA groups or whatever. So I have made cosplays for the main purpose of going out with my friends for a photoshoot (Though I would wear them on a convention later, but that wasn't the main point). And even without contests, the act of working on a cosplay, especially if you have someone to cosplay with you, is so much fun you don't necessarily need to go to a convention to make one. Sometimes we just do a photoshoot, but you could also check if maybe there is a local (brony-)community that would have meetups and ask if anyone cosplays there.

There are also certain events you might wear a cosplay to (I went to the League-Finals in cosplay and I was not the only one XP) like a movie-premiere or anything of the sorts.

That all being said though, I still think cosplaying on a convention is the most fun, but the others are fun as well.
