It's Christmas Eve and the Streets of Manehatten are Full of Ponies going from place to place. Lots of talking, laughing and vehicles going about. Eric is in his office smoking a cigar with his hooves up on his desk playing with a lighter while reviewing a case file. He then puts out his cigar and finishes his coffee as he prepares his journey home. Work was over and Eric was now going to his empty apartment, alone. As Eric layed down on his bed he had thoughts about where he was going in life. Eric was not happy and wanted someone special in his life to add more value to it. Eric eventually dosed off to sleep while watching late-night TV, the TV was left on till it went to static.

A steel grey coated stallion, with iron grey, messy mane and tail, horn curved, smooth, black and transitioning to scarlet towards the tip, walks into the room with Eric.

"Hey, Eric. How was work?" I ask, walking, exhausted, into the rec room. The fridge opens, and a cider is opened.

"Ahhhh; that's good Applejack Daniels..." I slouch in the couch, watching the T. V.

It was the next Morning and Eric woke up with a bottle of Applejack Daniels loosely griped in his hoof. As Eric woke he dropped the near empty bottle and cleaned his eyes before taking a gland at the clock. Eric was late for work "God Dammit! Not again." Eric shoots up from his sofa and quickly prepares himself a drink to take on his trip to work. Eric felt like trash yet again, he knew he had to solve a case if he was going to earn some decent pay.

 

Eric arrives at his place of work and says hello to his assistant before rushing into his office with the door closed behind him. He then sat at his desk and drank some more Applejack Daniels as he went through his case files for today. Eric solved a bunch of minor cases but nothing that would land him a promotion or a pay rise. Eric stood and looked out his office window at the streets of Manehatten. "Somewhere, somewhere out there is the big one just waiting to be solved, I just know it." Eric then lights himself a cigarette and continues with his papers.

After gazing at a bank for a while, he notices that no pony has left it. Suddenly, a shadow darts out of the bank, letting out the horrified screams bleed into the streets, it's source unclear. Afterall, no pony is rushing for the doors. Some citizens go in to check it out, and some who gaze in, stand stock-still, mouth agape. Shortly thereafter, they scream in horror.

Mist woke up and groaned. He had spent most of the previous night organising some of the case as he had recently solved. Mist looked over at the calendar on his wall. (another Christmas alone,) he thought to himself. Mist heard a pony walk past his door. It was no doubt the other detective who worked in the building. (Well there's nothing else to do,) Mist thought to himself as he got out from behind his desk, (might as well wish him a merry Christmas.) Mist walked out of his office and went to the door to the office of the detective. He knocked on the door and waited for a response from inside.

Eric was deep into his Case Files with a cigarette in hand. He had recently received a new Case File about an apparent murder down by the bank, close to where he lived. He started reading the new case and as usual the evidence was little to nothing to work off on. He read that there was a scream and no eye-witnesses. Eric was getting ready to head to the scene of the incident, grabbing his coat and putting out his cigarette as a knock on his door happened. Eric told the person behind the door that he was coming out and going to a crime scene to investigate.

Luckily for Marion, he left very little to go off of. He was transformed during the event, and had enchanted somthing in the main hall with the Door of Fear spell, preventing witnesses. Fortunately, it could be disabled remotely, so he doesn't have to worry about that. However, something he DOES know might give him away, is that, no matter the form he takes, if it has a horn, it's going to be his own. And there was one witness, who might account for his prescence; a little girl across the street. Fortunately for her, he doesn't know this. Just like her, then, to go report what happened. In the report, is a description of a horn: curved, smooth, black, and fading to scarlet at the tip. Also, a description of eyes: scarlet irises, green scelera, purple mist radiating from the outer corners, pupils being black slits. A mouth: full of sharp teeth. Otherwise, a thing of shadows. The murder appears to be shock; a heart attack in an elderly pony.

"Okay then," Mist shouted through the door, "I'll just wait out here then." Mist realised he probably could've just wished the investigator a merry Christmas through the door. But then Mist thought it would probably be impolite to not say it to his face. So Mist waited patiently outside the door.

Eric grabbed his coat and a pack of cigarettes before heading out. He then accompanied Mist and the two walked out to his vehicle. They both entered and Eric gave Mist the run down of the case. Eric and Mist arrive at the crime scene and Eric lights a cigarette and complains about the cold weather. He then approaches the crime scene and talks to the officer posted at the crime scene. Eric asks what the officers have found.

 

Eric spoke to Mist while walking to the officer

"Mist, look around to see if you can find anything the officers have missed."

Mist began to look around for clues, but if what Eric said was to be believed then it was gonna be a bit difficult. Eric then lite a cigarette and further analyzed the crime scene. As Eric was snooping around the scene he saw a glint come from some tall overgrown frozen grass at the end of the bank. Eric proceeded to investigate the strange glint and it turned out to be a shard of glass. The Shard had some snow and some black hoof prints on it. Eric found the Shard to be strange and useful to the investigation, so he put on some gloves and put the Shard of Glass into a plastic bag, he then sealed the bag.

 

Eric shouted to Mist

"I think I found something to do with this crime scene, I'll need to have the fingerprints examined though."

 

Eric approaches Mist and lowers his voice

"So did the little girl reveal anything?"

The little girl describes the thing she saw thusly. It was darkness, with eyes of dark magic, and a smooth, curved, black horn, which fades to cherry at the tip, as though it had been used to gore somepony. However, there were no reports of a stab victim, so that couldn't have been why. The mouth has smiling, with sharp teeth, like that of a predator. Otherwise, it was made of smoky darkness. That is the best that be gotten out of the little one. It cast a spell on something, but she didn't look at it. Everyone else did, and they screamed, like they'd seen a ghost, and an old stallion fell over. She doesn't know he died. It was her grandfather, whom she lived with. He was a good pony, and spoiled her rotten. She was his princess, and now she's alone.

Eric turned to Mist and replied to his comment

"Not sure, why don't you ask her if she saw anything."

Mist thanked the girl for her cooperation and turned to Eric, "yeah she did. It seems that the victim was her grandfather, but you may have already known that. However what you may not have known is that, according to the girl, the thing that did this was some sort of shadow creature. She said that he had sharp teeth, eyes of dark magic and a smooth shiny horn with a red tip."

 

Mist began walking back across the street to the crime scene, "now this might be premature, but from what the girl told me I think the killer may be an Umbrum {Shadow Pony}."

 

Mist turned to Eric, "now what's this clue you've found?"

"yeah she did. It seems that the victim was her grandfather, but you may have already known that. Eric replies to Mist with a happy tone

"That's some good information, this will surely help us with the case. As for the thing I found, I am not sure but it could be a possible murder weapon. We'll need to send it down to the lab boys to find out who these hoof prints belong too. Until then I think our work here is done, unless you wanna stick around in-case there is anymore clues?"

 

Eric walks with Mist to his car before asking him if he'd like to stay behind to look around longer.

"That's some good information, this will surely help us with the case. As for the thing I found, I am not sure but it could be a possible murder weapon. We'll need to send it down to the lab boys to find out who these hoof prints belong too. Until then I think our work here is done, unless you wanna stick around in-case there is anymore clues?"

 

Eric walks with Mist to his car before asking him if he'd like to stay behind to look around longer.

Sparkle opened her eyes as usual she was late. She climbed out of bed and immediately tripped on a toy car her son had left out. "Sentinel how many times have I told you to put away your toys when you've finished playing with them?" Sentinel was asleep in the next room over and didn't hear his mom. "And for Pete's sake get to school on time today. I don't need you going to the principal again" She left the house and to rub salt into the wound her car wouldn't start. She hit her head on the steering wheel multiple times hoping that it would start

Mist shook his head as he got in the car, "No I think if we were gonna find anything else we probably would have found it by now." Mist looked out the window and waited for Eric to start the car, "besides the faster we get that clue you found back to the lab the better."

 

Eric opens his car door while Shouting to Mist as a Snow Storm starts to form

"Alright Mist, lets head back to the station, I've had enough of this cold weather."

 

Eric and Mist are in Eric's car driving back to the station with a heavy snow storm obstructing a lot of their vision. Then out of no where something hits Eric's side of the Window Hard and leaves a black substance on his side completely blocking his vision. Eric hits the breaks hard and the icy roads make Eric's car slide uncontrollably over the road. The car hits a solid brick wall and the Air Bags failed to activate on the vehicle.

 

Eric sighs and looks over to Mist

"Are you alright Mist?"

Eric opens his car door while Shouting to Mist as a Snow Storm starts to form

"Alright Mist, lets head back to the station, I've had enough of this cold weather."

 

Eric and Mist are in Eric's car driving back to the station with a heavy snow storm obstructing a lot of their vision. Then out of no where something hits Eric's side of the Window Hard and leaves a black substance on his side completely blocking his vision. Eric hits the breaks hard and the icy roads make Eric's car slide uncontrollably over the road. The car hits a solid brick wall and the Air Bags failed to activate on the vehicle.

 

Eric sighs and looks over to Mist

"Are you alright Mist?"

Sparkle looked down the road at the car and in the one moment she needed her's it started. She pulled up alongside them half mounting the kerb. She got out and walked over to them. " hey guys." She said leaning on the crumpled hood of the car "what happened? " she was trying to hold back the laughter "your supposed to use the breaks down here" she let out a smallish giggle without realising it

She said leaning on the crumpled hood of the car "what happened? " she was trying to hold back the laughter "your supposed to use the breaks down here" she let out a smallish giggle without realising it

 

Mist gave a small smile, "we'll make sure to remember that for next time." Mist slowly got out of the car. He turned back to Eric, "come on, we'll have to hoof it there now."

Eric notices a shadow lurk up to the vehicle and puts his hoof on his weapon. Eric didn't want to give it away that he noticed the stranger approaching the crashed vehicle so kept quiet until the stranger leaned into the car. Thankfully it was just some woman and she seemed friendly enough.

 

Eric gets out the crashed vehicle without much hasel and comments on the crash

"GOD DAMMIT! This is gonna cost me a couple Months pay to fix! What the hell hit us back there any way?"

 

Eric then turns to the woman offering her car as ride back to the station

"Sorry ma'am but while we're on duty we cannot hitch rides with members of the public, unless it's for chase of a violent criminal. The station ain't too far any way, plus am going to need to find a pay phone to call someone to pull my car out of here. Hey Mist, look around for a pay phone and I'll wait here with the car."

Sparkle pulled out her detective Identification "now are you willing?" She said "or you could just walk. I don't have to help you I'm late enough" She began to drive off "c'ya boys!" She said before she pulled out onto the road and began to drive towards the centre of Manehattan

"Right away," replied Mist. He ran across the street and found the nearest payphone. He called the operator and received the number for Mac's Towing. "Hello, Mac's Towing?" Mist said into the phone, "this is Detective Inspector Mist. I need an immediate tow and a replacement car." Mist then told Mac's Towing where he was and hung up the phone. "The tow truck, along with a second car, should be here soon." said Mist as he returned to Eric's car. Mist stopped as he noticed a weird black substance on the front of the car, "hey Eric come check this out."

Buck! the thing thought to itself. Just it's luck to run into the detective investigating his case. He was doing so well during the chase, and only lost him for a moment, only to run into the window. Perhaps, I'm lucky, and didn't leave any sludge! I panick, checking it to see.

Buck me; some of it's gone! Oh well, I doubt anypony he knows can figure out what it is, or what it can do! I need it to carry out my plans!

Eric watched as the Woman willing to help him leaves him in the cold

"So she was an officer as well, heh, what a girl."

 

It's very cold and Eric puts his hands in his pockets and notices Mist returning. Eric then responds to Mist as he asked about the strange substance on the front of the car. Eric walks to the front of the car and checks investigates the strange substance on his car. He then asks Mist to stay away from it as it could be dangerous. Eric doesn't touche or interact with the black substance and waits for the pick-up truck to arrive.

 

As the pick-up truck arrives Eric turns to Mist and hands him a strange envelope with details 'not to open until home'. Eric greets the pick-up truck driver and tells him about the situation as he's loading his car onto the hook. The pick-up driver drives Eric and Mist to the station and asks if we'd like the car fixed up at the garage, Eric refuses and tells him to leave it in the police compound. 

 

Eric turns to Mist

"It's late, lets work on this tomorrow Mist. I've had enough drama for one day."
