Cats on Chains

Has anyone heard on the news anywhere about the cats who are on short chains near the town of Elkton, Virginia?

It has recently come to my attention that it is making national news.

I live only about a mile from them.

I assume you mean these are cats that are on chains outside, much like how many do with dogs?

My opinion is this: It is incredibly stupid. All of that. Putting a dog or a cat on a chain is incredibly pointless. I see it like this, if you get a pet such as that, and then you put them on a chain outside, then what was the point of getting said pet in the first place? Far too often I see dogs being on chains and they are just sitting in their confined zone outside, getting zero attention or love of any kind. They are supposed to be friends, not display pieces for one's yard.

I am with @Kyoshi on this one. I can understand the frustration of a cat always wanting to be outside, and I can also understand the fear of a cat getting run over by a car, because it's so commonplace.

However, having 2 cats myself, I NEVER let them outside, no matter how much they want to go out. Internal worms, rabies, dogs, vehicles, and other cats are my reasoning. That, and one of my cats is handicapped, missing his back left leg. Neither are declawed, because I see that as cruel, plus the random time they might get out, they will at least have a chance until I find them.

If the cat is to be outside, let it be feral. DO NOT feed it, making it dependant on you for food and thus will not hunt for self sustinance. ALWAYS spay and neuter, if you can catch it. And if you want the cat to be indoor/outdoors, then build a fence! Yes, it's more work than a dog fence, but if you want your cat to be happy then you will provide what you can for its happiness. Chaining it up and leaving it be is not caring for it (this goes for dogs too). I cannot build a fence for my cats, because I am thinking of the local rabies problem we have mostly. No fence can stop that, especially when there are dogs that love to dig on top of that. My cats are spoiled rotten (they have their own "bedroom" which is an unused walk in closet). Any animal owner needs to take the responsiblity to care for an animal with the same wellness in mind as you would another human (safety, shelter, sustinance, and companionship). Those cats are missing out of safety and companionship, they might as well be feral. It's sad really....I could never see myself doing that to my cats.

You can walk certain breeds of cats on leads as far as I know but only really the ones who are easily trainable with a dog like personality (at least not without difficulty). For example manx cats or the abyssian cat. But ofc you gotta be wary of dogs and that around so yea.

But if you are just leaving them tied up outside that's kinda just cruel.
