Why are malls portrayed as social gathering places?

Malls are a lot of fun if you approach them with the right frame of mind. In fact, I have many fond memories of spending time with my parents in a mall when I was a young child. 

 

They can be great shopping locations, but honestly I find online shopping to be much more comprehensive and convenient and I wouldn't be surprised if online shopping completely replaces physical shopping at some point.

 

That being said, I hope that malls will always be around. They are so much more than just shopping. They can be about the people and about chilling out and having fun if you allow it to be.

This. It makes it so you can decide what you're going to do after you meet up. If you say "hey, let's meet at taco bell" and then after eating you decide to see a movie, you probably have to get back

Well I would imagine being at the mall with friends is a whole different and more fun experience than being at the mall with parents.
