What should be the future of MLP

It is by no means any secret that MLP will span past its current season, season 5, and even past the next one, but with the extended life span of this incarnation of MLP there is the worry that it may become stagnant and end up going through seasonal rot as writers begin to run out of ways to progress the characters and make new story lines, while we all have confidence that the writers will keep the show going as strong as ever there is still that underlying worry. So I'm going to put forth my opinion for what direction the show should take in the future. Feel free to object and put forth your own ideas and opinions.

I think that MLP should take a leaf from season 2 of Digimon and shift the Mane 6 to being secondary characters while bringing new characters into the primary role, that way the show can stay fresh and new while still remaining firmly attached to the beginning of the show, it gives the writers something new to write about while allowing them to retread old ground with the new characters. And the new characters don't have to be completely new, why not have part of the new main cast be the CMC along with some of their class mates or take the characters focused on in Slice of Life and focus on them more, and the Mane 6 can still be there and even have episodes focusing on them it's just that they'd have a reduced role over all.

Picture this if you will, a few years have passed since whatever season finally they end on, the CMC have stopped being fillies and are now mares, the new season has them as the main characters along with either some of their previous class mates or some new characters, the Mane 6 are still present but have now sort of swapped roles with the CMC with them being the secondary characters the CMC once were. A new threat pops up and, as expected, the Mane 6 are the ones chosen to go defeat it but are in some way rendered incapable of defeating it and so it falls to the CMC and their friends to defeat the threat and they manage to do so using a magical power only they could access. So the new season follows the new main cast as they have their own problems that come with being the new defenders of Equestria or just everyday issues.

So, what do you think? Do you think this would be a good direction for the show to take or do you think the idea wouldn't work? Or is there anything you would add or take away from this idea?

I like this idea for the most part, but I don't think the CMC's would fit any kind of extreme action episode, such as a conflict with a powerful villain or something, that is where I see an issue here. The CMC's seem best when they are in their element, the slice of life style episodes and anything beyond that might be too much. Perhaps having them meet new characters along the way, that could help that along.

There are so many potential ways they can take the show that it is mind boggling for me. They could have Derpy be a prominent character that does things in many episodes, relatives of the mane 6 could have their own adventures, so many possibilities. *_*

Actually, this isn't such a bad idea and I wouldn't mind this route being taken as an opportunity to transition to another series and end FiM. I wouldn't want this to happen in Season 6....more like I'll see this as an appropriate action in Season 7 despite others saying the series will end around Season 9. I could also be a good window from the G4 characters to G5. Nice suggestion though....wouldn't hurt to explore this option though I'm sure the writers have a few things in store.

I wouldn't think that the show would need to be focused on the most famous Background characters though...I see that focus going in too many directions to actually count and I'm not that brilliant enough to picture a series focused on the few you've mention. I see anything CMC oriented more like a "short episode" as someone suggested in the past

There has been a lot of changes to the status quo this season, so I wouldn't be surprised if we started to shift over to new characters and concepts. Not necessarily overshadowing the Mane 6, but there would be a bit less focus on them. It should positively affect the toy sales too, we need new characters since most parents (and kids) don't want 10 variations of the same toy.

Do you think the show should put more focus on the supporting characters, such as Cheerilee, Zecora, etc?

I think that they should, we don't need another episode like Slice of Life but we do need more focus on them.

I think as the show progresses, there might be less focus on the mane 6 only. After all, this season we have seen a lot of new characters put into focus like Big Mac, the CMCs, Moon dancer, Gilda etc. However, the mane 6 will still be the main characters.

There has been no announcement regarding a season 7 and there is evidence to suggest that the series last season could very well be season 6. And whilst your idea isn't a bad one I doubt Hasbro would do such a thing. Simply put Hasbro will want to reboot MLP every decade to try and appeal to younger generations. So I think they'd rather reboot the MLP world in a way that would cater more to the kids of the time rather then continue G4.

I don't know if it's a certainty that the show will span past season 6 yet. I mean ratings for this season are down, and toy sales have been down this year as well. If anything, I'd say end it with the movie and that'd be good for me. End generation 4 on a somewhat high note rather than try and draw it out for the sake of bronies.

tbf, I don't think we can take ratings into account, I mean, the show's staff is fully aware that the majority of fans watch streams of the new episodes online :P

I agree with ending the show on a high note with the movie, especially if they can avoid giving more focus on BG ponies  :eww:

But that doesn't explain toy sales being down.

Eh, while I'm aware that the toy sales are down, from what I've heard it isn't too much of a hit(though note that I don't follow sales much, and I'm no expert on how sales work, so don't take too much stock in my comment :x)

If the past is any indication, this is what is most likely to happen.

G4 will end, there'll be a cooling-off period and then G5 will launch.  The show will cater to a new (and younger) target audience whilst also appealing to older fans who fondly remember the 4th generation.  This way the franchise stays fresh and nostalgic at the same time, catering to multiple demographics.

Speaking as a brony myself, I haven't heard any solid details regarding the 5th generation but I can honestly say that I'll watch it when it airs, if only to see if it lives up to the G4 legacy.  And if I had kids (never happen btw) I'd watch it with them for certain. And I'm pretty sure that's what Hasbro is aiming for.

It's a good marketing strategy that's been in play since the 80's and I can't see Hasbro changing their methods any time soon.
