The Doctor. I mean...he's into his 12th Regeneration and he's over  2 millennia old....And look at the companions and friends/lovers he's lost in those 2,000 years...must be hell living with all that....not to mention the regret and darkness that hangs around him....Then there's the whole Gallifrey fiasco...

Raven from Teen Titans - the 2004 animated series atleast. Haven't watched any of the GO remake.

She's a introverted loner, although in her case it's both by temperament and necessity, whereas in my case only the former. For some time, she was a bit of a role model to me. She keps to herself, but it's okay - she's accepted for who she is, atleast most of the time. And she's got the best dry wit in the history of snark. Frankly, she's everything I wanted to be in my late teens, and she was accepted for it, not shunned. And every time I was seriously considering someone's demise, I watched "Spellboud" and everybody lived. TYhat's a good thing, I suppose.

And even though I got over my angsty teens, she's still very relatable and valuable to me.

Another fictional character I deeply relate to is Ciaphas Cain - main protagonist from Warhammer 40k novel series named after him. His... couragus cowardice, and being constantly thrown into the worst combat zones even though all he wants is some peace and quiet (paired with some "company" and good amasec) reminds me of my own shortcomings, and even though I hate every single one with burning passion, he's living proof that even though we're not perfect, we can still get our stuff together and do what needs to be done. Yes, even if we're so afraid we're shaking like a pneumatic hammer.

Accelerator from A Certain Magical Index. He's by far the most powerful Level 5 ESPer in Academy City, and people have been attacking him since he was a little kid trying to prove they were stronger. (Due to his reflection ability he's virtually untouchable and anyone that tries gets hurt - badly) After a while he was considered a threat to security and was attacked by the city's military, which by attacking him completely wiped themselves out. Because of this he wants to gain absolute power that no one will ever challenge. He agrees to take part in an experiment where he would kill 20,000 clones and advance to Level 6. The scientists convinced him that the clones were simply "wind-up dolls", artificial creations, even though they showed human traits. He was stopped after killing 10,031 clones, now thinking himself scum/worthless. He meets an additional clone in the form of a young girl who's being hunted for her ability to direct the other clones, and Accelerator gets shot in the head to save the girl and the other clones from a virus rather than defend himself. Now ironically he can only function and use his ability with the help of the network of clones. He still thinks he can never atone for his sins but dedicates himself to protecting the young girl.

Basically he comes across as nothing but a power-hungry asshole but all he really wanted was for people to stop attacking him all the time, and getting hurt. It's notable that he's never shown starting a fight unprovoked, someone always attacks him first. He got messed up by people always attacking/hating him, his reflective ability impacting his hormones, and researchers screwing around with his brain; to the point he can't even remember his own name. He's the strongest Esper in the city but really just wanted to be normal.

Whew I think that's the most I've ever written, Accelerator's my favorite character in any media. Here have some gifs:

Holly Tanaka in Halo 5...she effectively survived Armageddon on her planet, the whole human colony exterminated and an instant ice-age and yet she came out alive, saving 4 others and continues to fight on. And yet she constantly exhibits social problems showing not all is well with her :(

I'll just for with a childhood one of my mine: Makoto Kino/Sailor Jupiter.   When I was first getting into anime,  I didn't have to any cannons I felt that "connection" to but when I saw Jupiter,  it was a hit for her.   I'd always had a hard time making friends based on how I looked or even my own nature or people just had already labeled me like they did with her in first eps.  So watching her grow in showing also a high romance side (yah I got  that too just super hidden)  and also having tom boyish themes but also a high code of her own honer,  and never running from any fight of any kind just made me sympathize with her.   I mean this poor girl has her heart broken a lot....

Prince Vegeta:  Planted go bangs from evil space war lord/dad is killed in front of him/last of his kind of a hand full of saiyans/Is left only with Goku in the end/watches a fool take his place in power/his son has purple hair.   Yah I feel for this guy...

Spider Carnage well Spider Carnage Suffers from self-loathing, misplaced envy, and suicidal depression, coupled with aggression issues and a need to lash out at the world. It isn't pretty and is played entirely for tragedy.

Take one unstable kid. Give him Spider-Man's powers. Throw in the Carnage symbiote for good measure. Run.

Rainbow dash large.png

Tanks for the Memories" deals with a psychology process known as the Five Stages of Grief:

Denial, when Rainbow Dash is uneasy on Fluttershy's speech of hibernation.
Anger, when Rainbow lashes out at her friends for agreeing with Tank.
Bargaining, when Rainbow tries to sabotage the weather factory to stop winter.
Depression, when the pressured Rainbow mourns Tank, and her friends pity her.
and Acceptance, when Rainbow finally lets Tank make good on his hibernation

It hurt my heart to see rainbow dash sad

after lord garmadon being bitten   by the great devourer and slowly turning evils

Bane.

  • The Brute: Used to be, but now he's stuck on life support.
  • Dark Lord on Life Support: He's wholly dependent on life support, his life of Venom abuse having turned him into a shell of the man he once was.
  • I Was Quite a Looker: He used to be a well-muscled man even without the Venom, but years of using the stuff has reduced him to a bag of bones.
  • Power Degeneration: His super-steroid Venom causes this. A lifetime of Venom use has left him a comatose and broken man dependent on Venom and hooked up on life support 24-7.

I feel for bane, even due he is a villain. this is a fate worse than death

Koishi Komeiji, Touhou Project. In particular the parts of her page that stand out to me are:

"Koishi's personality is generally playful and free-spirited, not unlike a child [...] She does not seem to go out of her way to harm others out of malice or spite, although she has occasionally caused issues for other characters due to a lack of self-awareness."
"To escape the fear and hatred which other beings feel towards the satori species, she attempted to destroy her mind-reading ability by closing her Third Eye. However, this had the side effect of sealing away her own conscious mind, causing her to lose all thoughts and motives; she could no longer be hated, but neither could she be loved, or even remembered by people who saw her."
"Koishi's presence cannot be noticed by other beings unless she allows it, even while standing in plain view because she's closed her mind, or her Third Eye."

I sympathise with her because of my own struggles with trying to socialise and feeling like I don't exist unless I make my presence extremely obvious, only to be forgotten shortly after anyway, and how I've mostly shut myself off thanks to the bad experiences I've had with people over the last couple years. That said I am (slowly) working on it and trying to get back into the swing of things.

Other than her, there's Reisen Udongein Inaba (she wants to make herself useful to others, and suffers from anxiety), Kogasa Tatara (thrown away because she wasn't good enough), Parsee Mizuhashi (embodiment of envy/jealousy), and a bunch of others for similar reasons.

Off the top of my head, maybe Megamind. He kinda got the fuzzy end of the lollipop from the get-go and has been trying to make the best of it ever since. He has feelings and falls in love like everyone else, but no one cares because of a few little foibles like trying to destroy Metro City and kill off Metro Man. These things happen. But he does manage to be clever, stylish and knows the rules of supervillain etiquette. He managed to gain a bit of credit ultimately, after defeating his own creation, Tighten, but he should have been recognized earlier.

And then there’s Jar Jar. Poor Jar Jar, born into a generation with no sense of humor. Patently uncool and just trying to lighten things up in a world of dark, dark, dark characters with dark costumes and low dark voices who make it fashionable to be powerless against their own dark passions.

So far, almost every.single.damn.demons. in Demon Slayer.  It's like for every new demons they introduced their past gets even sadder and sadder-and you can't help it but feel a great empathy for them despite of their crimes.

As an extension of the "which character do you sympathize with the most in MLP" thread, I;m wondering, what other fictional characters do you sympathize with the most?

Princess Leia is probably the biggest for me. In just the first movie she is kidnapped, tortured, and forced to watch her entire planet get murdered. And it only gets more "fun" from there.
