Favorite villain/antagonist so far?

I was kind of surprised to see this thread get bumped, and I see Sombra's been added to the poll, too. Thanks, ~Chaotic Discord~!

 

Oh yeah, you can choose minor villains too! You know like Gilda, Flim and Flam, Trixie... But they aren't very big characters, but you can still choose them! 

 

Trixie was only really a villain in Magic Duel, and that was more the Alicorn Amulet's influence than her own doing. As for the rest, they're really only antagonists. When I made this thread, I wanted to keep it strictly too those who clearly crossed the villain line.

I would vote for Discord, but alas, he is good, and honestly I can't complain. Now we'll get some spot-on character development and hopefully get an episode of Good Discord.

Discord, of course. He is a villain that can have fun while making the chaos capital of the world, and enjoy some chocolate rain in the process. He is pretty much my favorite villain.

Heh, what can I say?  Who else went so far as to separate the Mane 6 and psychologically deconstruct five of them?  And he knew dismantling those five would cause number six to quit.  That's pretty hard for any other bad guy to top.

 

Another thing I like about Discord is that he believes in payback.  He remembered Fluttershy was the only one who was almost able to resist his corruption.  So when he was released in Keep Calm and Flutter On he made it a personal point to get her.  He kept pushing her buttons until...victory!  He made Fluttershy snap and this time he didn't have to touch her to do it.  Too bad his success was short-lived and bittersweet when he realized he lost the only friend he ever had.

Favorite villain thus far is definitely Discord, but he's one of a kind.  I want to really see more villains like Chrysalis or King Sombra (or a return of Chrysalis, because, c'mon, that'd be sick!!!  ), ya know, downright nasty and straight-up evil characters bent on world or pony domination.  Certainly would make for some epic story arcs next season.  It'd also be quite cool if Studio B decided that next season they'd have a season-spanning villain, instead of one or two who just show up once in the season opener and finale.  That would certainly be new for the show and make for some new and very interesting story-threads, as well as up the suspense and stakes quite a bit.

Your thread has the unique situation of being our first thread created for the sake of discussing your favorite villain, and thus it is a centerpiece thread for 'who's your favorite villain?' topics :3 So, occasional merges and thus bumps of activity are to be expected. That's why I edited your poll as well, so that everything can be up to date ^^

 

As for the 'Trixie, Gilda, etc aren't there' bit, I too agree that there is obviously a massive difference between the Season premiere & finale villains as opposed to the one-off characters. The four 'primary' villains are legit villains, as they're a 'global' threat, global in this case meaning dangerous to more than just one or a few characters. Gilda, Trixie, Flim & Flam, etc. can all be seen as antagonists, which actually aren't the same thing as villains.

 

An antagonist just means a character that poses a problem to the protagonist(s), and isn't an actual, incredibly massive threat. Flim and Flam? Even if they -won- and took over the farm, nobody would actually get -hurt-. Then there's Gilda who was just a prick, and Trixie, though much more a villain in Magic Duel, started off as a one-time antagonist who also posed no true threat.

Are you not reading the comic series? The first four issues are about her return! And they're pretty awesome, too. More focused on the adventure aspect, more like what Faust originally wanted to do with the series. Plus, issues three and four have these awesome variant covers:

I have, actually, except for #4, haven't gotten to that one yet; suppose I should've mentioned that.  Yeah, her return in the comics has been awesome, certainly hasn't disappointed; depending on how they end up, if it's possible, I'd still like to see her come back at some point, she's just a really great villain who I'd like to see more of.

Mine will always be the Discord man! He can make freaking chocolate milk come out of cotton candy clouds! How cool is that? Oh, and now that he's reformed we get to see him alot more, which is great!

Discord is the obvious top answer.

Mainly since he has had the most development as a villain.

 

However I really am taking a shine for Chrysalis.

I haven't read the comics, but I believe those talk about her character more.

I hope that she makes a comeback in the show and has more time devoted in getting to know her.

Lightning Dust. She is such a good foil to RD's character. And the episode, at first, makes you think just like Rainbow Dash; that Lightning Dust is RD with more drive and is the better of the two. But then, slowly, her darkness is revealed. They were just really clever with her.

I love his design and his personality. He does whatever he wants, whenever he wants! But he doesn't use his powers to kill or boring crap like that. I mean, cotton candy clouds! Chocolate rain! So cool.

Discord's taken a bit of a hit for me because of Keep Calm and Flutter On ( I think that handled his reformation very poorly, and frankly I miss his evil side) but he still slightly edges out Chrysalis for #1.  Guy oozes charisma, and he was the biggest threat in the sense that he's the only one to actually defeat the Elements of Harmony.

 

Still, you can't go wrong with Chrysalis.  She's more of a Disney villain a la Maleficent, so she's a little bit more "pure" evil, but Kathleen Barr plays it *so* well.

IMO, it isn't really much of a contest. Discord is a villain perfectly tailored for the show, loaded with originality, and given a legendary voice actor to boot.

 

Nightmare Moon and Chrysalis are more typical and cliche'd, and Sombra was poor even by Meghan McCarthy's own admission.

 

Discord pretty much wins hands down.

Nightmare Moon was really Princess Luna all along, so I don't really consider her a Villain after that. Chrysalis didn't really appeal to me that much since she appeared for a short time during the final episode of the second season. King Sombra is pretty much my least favorite villain, I know nothing about him other than "some villain who wants to take over the Crystal Empire."I kinda need more backstory to it imo.

It's time we settle this. Who is the best villain? I've got a poll here and we're going to vote. I know there are quite a few threads like this, but this time around, we have more villains, so I figured a new poll should be made.

Nightmare Moon

 

 

Fueled by jealousy, Princess Luna transformed into Nightmare Moon and attempted to plunge the world into eternal night. Defeated by her sister using the Elements of Harmony, Luna was banished in the moon for 1,000 years, until she broke free and was defeated a second time, by Twilight and her friends.

 

Discord

 

 

Chaos in physical form. Long before Celestia and Luna, Discord ruled over Equestria in chaos! Among his many dastardly deeds, chocolate rain and cotton candy clouds were some of his most memorable. He was eventually defeated by Celestia and Luna, and later, by the Mane 6. He has since been freed and reformed, having learned (mostly) the error of his ways.

 

Queen Chrysalis

 

 

The malevolent queen of the changelings, Chrysalis wants nothing more than to complete drain Equestria of it's love. Having failed to take over Canterlot via infiltration, Chrysalis later attacked Ponyville using brute force. After kidnapping most of Ponyville, Chrysalis had the intention of draining Twilight Sparkle of both her love and magic, but was inevitabley defeated by the very mare she had planned to drain.

 

King Sombra

 

 

After completely enslaving the Crystal Empire and corrupting it's power source, the Crystal Heart; King Sombra was swiftly dealt with by Celestia and Luna. Turned to shadow, he cursed the Crystal Empire, and both disappeared for 1,000 years. However, Sombra did not remain banished, and attempted to reclaim the Crystal Empire after his thousand year slumber, only to be defeated by the very thing he sought out the most: the Crystal Heart.

 

Nightmare Rarity

 

 

Kidnapped by shadows, and imprisoned on the moon, Rarity has been corrupted by the very darkness that fueled Princess Luna's transformation into Nightmare Moon. Upon succumbing to the darkness, Rarity appears in front of her friends as the Queen of the darkness: Nightmare Rarity.

Rarity turns into a Nightmare Moon copy? Man, I should probably start reading the comics; they looked really good but I never got around to seeing them. Same exact thing I did with the Sonic fandom, too. Never read the comic series until there were already hundreds and hundreds of issues to catch up on.

 

Also, I feel it's really time to simply cover the basis with the villain threads. Instead of having one topic for the majors and then other topics popping up here and there such as yours, Twinhead, I feel it's a lot easier to just merge them into one, and edit the OP to have a more broad poll.

I gotta go with discord. He's crazy, insane, non sensical, awesome. I never liked nightmare moon. She's just a basardization of Luna, best princess. Thought about voting for flim and flam, they're pretty bad. But every time I watch them, I can't help thinking of the WB frog. It just kills it for me.

That's fine with me, I didn't even know we had another thread like this floating around, otherwise I wouldn't have made mine.

 

Anyway, I really recommend the comics, you're not too far behind yet, so I'd suggest giving them a read sometime.

 

I suppose it's worth mentioning that my favorite villain is Nightmare Rarity. She's gotten about two panels of screentime so far, but her design is amazing!
