general When Has A Fandom Rubbed You The Wrong Way?

Most fandoms I've been a part of regularly piss me off

Right now it's probably the Metroid fanbase, somewhere between actively petitioning a game to be cancelled and continually trashing Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze literally just because it wasn't Metroid Prime 4

Prime is good, obviously; but Returns and Tropical Freeze are decent, too.

I've seen some Bronies want Radiant Hope (Siege Of The Crystal Empire) to get the same fate as Princess Amore (FIENDship Is Magic #1), go through a wood-chipper, etc.; one even said she's pathetic for still grieving after 1,000 years.

...Feel free to reread that last one as much as needed before it starts making sense. (Hint: Plan for bathroom breaks.)

This fandom like all the fricken time oh and I hate the gamer fandom with a passion, I'm a gamer but I don't want to be associated with those jerks. Gaming Youtubers I'm cool with because they seem pretty nice ,but I can't stand the gaming fandom regardless.

Sonic fans:

  • Are allergic to being happy
  • Demand something, get it, then bitch about it

Bronies:

  • invade other fandoms and interests with ponies, thus weaponizing it and spreading hatred for the show around by making it a threat
  • are generally very bad at animation, singing, and writing
  • regularly obsess over non-characters in the background and, based upon wildly unfounded conjecture from innocuous details, make up shallow if not insulting caricatures of the latest Tumblr fads as their sole definition
  • simultaneously are unable to understand jokes or subtle hints, taking everything at exact face value
  • hate canon pairings with a burning passion (Shining x Cadance, Spike x Rarity, Twilight x Flash) unless they somehow think it's subtly hinted or better yet incestuous (Macintosh x Marble)
  • attempted to sue Hasbro for using the name Derpy, not because that name was made by the fandom, but because it was "ableist" (note: the writer of Last Roundup, Amy Keating Rogers, has an autistic son)
  • directly and intentionally mention brony projects to Hasbro staff in public, on camera, and then wonder why these projects get shut down because they don't understand anything about trademarks (see Fighting is Magic)
  • are being given increasingly virulent creative control over the show and loads of recognition from Hasbro, but waste the opportunity on stupid memetic running gags

i'm sure there's more i've forgotten siiiiigh

Shining x Cadance = badass wedding and honeymoon.

Spike x Rarity = doesn't automatically have to be sexual, pervs.

Twilight x Flash = can work, but needs more development.

Mac x Marble =

Unfortunately I have to say that, as much as I do love the positive elements of the Brony fandom, and have been highly impressed with a vast array of fan made content. I have seen, and been irked by most of the above, but can only add that these annoying aspects, as with any large group only come from and apply to some people, not all

The first one - Bringing Ponies into non Pony related fandoms, is a particular Bugbear for me (as in the definition of the word meaning a source of irritation, not the flying Panda) It's good that we like Ponies, but there are other things in the world, and other things don't need to be invaded by MLP. Taking things from outside and bringing them across is ok. Crossovers and reinactments of other works of Fiction made for Bronies to watch, but taking univited Ponies into other fandoms, is not only disrespectul, but also a big cause of anti brony hate

Re the Animation, Singing and Writing. Not so sure about that one, from the fandom there are some very talented artists on Deviant, great writers on FIMFiction, and very good musicians, animators and voice actors on youtube (and some good writers there too) but just as with the rest of the world, true talents are rare, if not they wouldn't be talents, they would just be normal.

Obsessing over background characters has brought out some interesting concepts and stories, but also a mountain of butthurt when people have their headcannons challenged. Again it's an element that could use some balance, if you want to use a fairly blank canvass to create an original character, there's no harm in giving it a go, but some people have to be willing to accept that their ideas may not actually be very good.

Not being able to take a joke I have seen a lot, taking everything as exact face value not so much though, except for a few people who, when I pointed it out, were fine to openly relate it to the fact that they have aspergers or something of the like, in which case it's understandable, and can apply to members of any fandom

The Canon pairing's thing... eeeeyup. Although I think with Marble and Mac, the body language and expressions were suggestive beyond just being shy - as accurate as you can be with body language in animation, but tilting your head down and looking up towards someone as Marble was doing, is not the same as just avoiding eye contact and looking mostly away, so the show can take some of the blame for that one

The whole Derpy thing, I can say that I like Derpy a lot, my kids like Derpy a lot, but we're fine with her being called Muffins in show (we still refer to her as Derpy though). I saw a lot of complaints on EQD pre and after EP100 regarding use of the Muffins name rather than Derpy, generally along the lines of "the fandom being given the middle finger by Hasbro". Really it was the best they could have done in the situation, wait for the shitstorm to die down and bring her back, with a different name, and a name that came from a fandom created aspect of her character.

Whether bronies like it or not, there will be kids in schools all over the English speaking world who don't watch MLP and use "Derp" as a derogatory insult, and as much as we would like a beloved Pony to remove the negative meaning of that word, it will only send a confusing message to kids who do watch the show, then go to school and see the same word being used to put someone down. Unless we're able to explain to every MLP watching kid in the world that the other Ponies in the show aren't insulting the one that looks different and why, (and bear in mind here, plenty of kids will be watching MLP without adult Bronies to explain things to them) it's better to just have her called Muffins.

Trademarks - yes, after 5ish years everyone should be pretty adept when it comes to avoiding C&D's unfortunately though, it seems the everyone is not

Aaaand the last one. I will stick up for the value of things like EP 100, but that's because for a kids show, MLP is still pretty damn decent. Memes have and will always get old fast though, so we could do with a bit more of knowing how to get the most out of something, then moving on from it

My brother/roommate used to be in the FNAF fandom... which meant I had to deal with occasionally finding him looking up sexual FNAF fanart. Now that wouldn't have been so bad despite the fact that he was looking up sexual pictures of robotic animals with children inside of them. Children. CHILDREN.

The things I've seen from bronies and pretty much every fandom has made me hate all fandoms. I enjoy content, but hate the fandoms. I only participate here because it's somewhat tamer than most places because the staff keep a strict shift.

My experience with bronies thus far in the past 5 years:

  • Insults left and right for not liking character X or liking character Y
  • Death threats over the most trivial of things.
  • Being told I am an intolerant asswipe worse than Hitler for not wanting porn of MLP in my face.
  • Sexual harassment. Amazing considering I am male, but that did not stop people from asking me for inappropriate pictures, making inappropriate gestures and being all around disgusting pigs.
  • Rumor spreading. I love when people who have a bone to pick over something that happens on the internet decide that they need to go on vengeance plots and spread rumors.
  • Being the actual victim in a situation and being told I am not the victim and instead, siding with the perpetrator because she is female and there is no way she could have done any wrong. When in reality we all know it's  because they are lonely males who think if they white knight for this girl the chance to bone her may appear.
  • PEOPLE SENDING ME PORN FOR NO FREAKIN' REASON OUT OF THE BLUE WITH NO WARNING.
  • PEOPLE SENDING ME THEIR FREAKIN' NUDES. BOTH MALE AND FEMALE. SERIOUSLY. WHY DO PEOPLE THINK THIS IS OKAY TO DO?
  • Explicitly telling people I don't want their ERP, and they try to turn any RP into an ERP anyways.
  • Had quality content that I worked on rejected without any feedback while I watched stories like My Little Dashie take front pages.
  • Theft of my artwork.
  • General rudeness both online and when meeting bronies in real life.
  • Being told off for criticizing any of these things with the fandom and told that I am the problem.

Yeah my experience hasn't been that great. I stick around here because of the few people that make it somewhat worth it, but I love it when people tell me not to stereotype the fandom, but how can you expect me to look past all of this when this has been multiple people repeatedly? I can't just have coincidentally ran into all the worst people, clearly there are more bad seeds than a lot of people are willing to admit.

A lot of AUs either has the animatronics as separate entities from the kids or don't have the whole haunted animatronics what so ever. The FNAF fandom still sucks though I mean the fact that the sick demented guard that MURDERED 4 CHILDREN is considered some "kawaii smexy beast" by most of the fandom is bad enough on its own then there's the whole foxy business. I have never seen the draco in leather pants trope done at that big of a level oh wait no the creepypasta fans do it at a bigger level. Mass murdering mentally disturbed  scarred 11 year old boy and a majority of the art has him kawaii desu'd into being a 20 something bishie.

Well, definitely the Silent Hill Fandom.

I mean, they dont do that much bad stuff and i like to talk about Silent Hill but whenever someone asks me about my opinion on the games, or i post in in treads like : Yeah, my favorite game would be part 4 or Shattered Memorise, because their are unique and i dont like part 2 that much, because the other worlds werent that great...

Then they just start to spam me with stupid AVGN Gifs and tell me that i wouldnt be a real Silent Hill Fan, with sentences like :

How can you like Part 4? Part 4 isnt even a Silent Hill game, it was never supposed to be and everything after three sucks.

And how dare you to dislike part 2??? Part 2 is the best! I just assume you know nothing about Silent Hill and are to stupid to understand the complex story!!

Silent Hill isnt about the Otherworlds, its all symbolic for the peoples minds in Silent Hill! And if you dont like part 2, you should just play it again and again and again UNTIL YOU LIKE IT!!!

And then they just talk and talk and talk and i dont really want to.

I guess some Silent Hill fans are WAY to obsessed over Part 2 and should respect other opinions more.  :ooh:

Not all Silent Hill Fans are like that, i know. I actually had nice conversations with some, but with others...no way. I just dont want to talk with those.

better yet incestuous (Macintosh x Marble

Actually, its not  incest.  They are VERY,VERY,VERY distant cousins , incest is only closely related like first cousins, siblings, parents and kids, etc. , Pinkie said that she was AJ's "Fourth Cousin twice removed by a fifth cousin" going by what I know fourth cousin twice removed means (it means the great grandchild of a fourth cousin, which means they share the same Great-Great-Great Grandparents, so just by that it would mean that Pinkie's Great-Great-Great-Great Grandparent  was a Apple which is no different from anyone else because  most people are in some way distantly related to one another),but Pinkie's wording makes them even more distant than just fourth cousins.

@@Key Sharkz, wow, I've had it bad in this fandom but not THAT bad

And it's been four years for me... What jumps at me though is that you might be one to attract a lot of attention from people and you seem (or seemed) pretty involved in the fandom. Such a combination might be a significant risk factor to coming finding yourself caught in the shenanigans of revolting people. Perhaps due to my taking measures to guard against disappointment, not being that involved in the fanbase and just not being all that active outside of private circles could explain a thing or two as to why things have been relatively quiet for me.

Don't get the wrong idea, though. There's no certainty if that's really the case and regardless, it's just something for you to think about and decide for yourself whether or not you want to try anything to hopefully get a more comfortable experience.

Quite honestly, I've no clue how famous people manage. They either know how to deal with people or have really thick skin. Most likely a combination of the two.

Right now it's probably the Metroid, somewhere between actively petitioning a game to be cancelled and continually trashing Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze literally just because it wasn't Metroid Prime 4

First comment to the thread already someone mentioned that fiasco going on in the Metroid fanbase

Yeah, that petition was quite infuriating. I don't, however, recall the fanbase continually bashing DK:TF

Could be the Metroid forums I go to. There were grievances about DK:TF but from what I recall, quite a few actually went and got the game and liked it.

Gross, I do ship it though but not because of that :unamused:.  That's just wrong on so,so many levels  :eww: . Its like practically everyone shipping the cake twins (to the point where if I see something that says Cakes Next Gen I just assume its incestuous in nature) or dipper and mable from gravity fall, even though the later is wrong on even more levels since Dipper and Mable are  based  on  the creator of that show and his sister when they were kids  :eww: . The amount of Lyra smileys can't truly display how gross I think all that is,but its basically  :eww: times a million and I'm not one to use smileys unless they show my emotions more than words can and well the lyra smiley is exactly how I feel about that.

Only pairing I've seen people complain about notably is Twilight and Flash; haven't seen notable number of people disapprove of other two.

As for Marble and Mac, is that fact? Because I've never seen someone say "I like this pairing because it's incest" (not denying there are such people but I haven't seen them so far). I've read people say that while Pie and Apple relations are unclear, if Marble and Mac were to marry, the two families to definitely be related as in-laws.

Wow. That's terrible. I haven't at all had most of those things happen to me while in Bronydom both online and offline. And with Bronies? Really? I guess I was more fortunately to have seen decent Bronies.

I don't consider that as a specifically Bronydom problem though; I'm sure this happens in general. I expect you know already that something doesn't have to be "high quality" for many people to love it.

I'm not being entirely honest; I neglected to mention that most of my experience with shippers is pornographic. Perverts in general have a huge interest in avant-garde fetishes.

Out of curiosity, can I ask, as someone who's been around this for 5 years, in your opinion have these things gotten worse or better recently?. I only encountered this fandom about a year ago, and while I have seen some of this stuff - having to find and pre check a lot of things before I let my kids view, means in the past year I've spent a lot of time on Youtube, EQD, FIMFiction, and MLP related Deviant Art groups - To me it's been very much the minority. For every 20 reasonable people/comments you get one asshole saying or linking something stupid, and they're generall shot down pretty quickly. Also seems to be quite a large number of Bronies around these days who acknowledge and criticize the same things you mentioned. So from my perspective as a comparative newbie, it seems like something that still goes on, but is consistently unwelcome to the larger community, rather than being frequent. Several people have said the community was more volatile around 2011-2013.

I suppose what i'm asking is, does it still seem as bad to you now as it always was, or do you think that perhaps some of the worse elements - the harassers and threateners, have moved on been chased out, or at least become less vocal due to people not taking their crap?

Just seen a fair few things like this where people openly air their complaints about other Bronies from within the fandom, and one of the things I was told early on was that saying anything that could be taken as "anti brony" would generate a lot of threats and hate, but I've never seen it.

Slice Of Life was pretty good for a "pandering" episode.

No one's headcanons got ruined, each fan-favorite had enough screentime, and the moral was unique and mature-ish.
