Why is smile so popular?

"Smile" is one of my favorite songs in the whole series, it was a great way to show what Pinkies goal in life was, who SHE is, and on top of that it's catchy. In my opinion it was a great way to start off a great episode and introduce a new race. But why is this song so popular?  This song is usually number one on people "Top ten my little pony songs" list that I have seen and it can never really die down. I think it's so popular because, the tune can get stuck in your head and it isn't just repeating the same lyrics over and over again and with the up beat tune and the colors which are usually showed to symbolize happiness can make anyone in a bad mood smile. We know Pinkie and we love to see her trying to make as many people as happy as she can so seeing and or hearing her sing about that specific topic can make us smile. Why do you enjoy this song, and why do you think it's popular?

(If this is in the wrong place, please don't hide it. Can you perhaps move it to a better spot if it is?)

I believe it is so popular because it was the very first song Pinkie sung that actually had meaning to it. Prior to "Smile" Pinkie was seen as some static character only existing to give the audience comedic relief. People (ashamed to say myself included) found her personality random and her "party talent" unnecessary and honestly....confusing.

Characters like Pinkie aren't new....but it's rare when you give a character like Pinkie such a grounded REASON as to why she is the way she is. Smile captured the very essence of her perfectly and shut those nay-sayers up.

Not to mention, the build up. It starts out "catchy" and innocent....great animation and we still get those "wtf" moments throughout the song like how she was able to swing the jump rope with apparently no one there and how she was literally everywhere.

When the town joined, tears started to appear. The fact this annoying silly filly that throws kiddie parties have such an impact on others in a POSITIVE way makes you envy them in general. The world lacks what we see in Pinkie: an individual who gives ans only wants to see them happy in return. The climatic ending was....unexpected. like literally, after watching the song, i had to go back wonderinf how in the hell did they manage to transition from a "happy catchy tune" to a "beautiful and meaningful song with a bangin chorus"

As you can see by all fhe bullsh*t i typed, i am a huge fan of the song and it made me respect Pinkie since then. The episode itself was....eh. To me, it fell short after the song. "Pinkie Pride" did well to remain excellent after a good song. And it had nothing to do with Weird Al for me. Pinkie managed to own her on damn episode even with someone famous playing the guest star. Her ballad wthin the episode was beautiful has a similar message to it.

the only other pony that had their "Smile" song was Rarity. "Rules of Rarity

These points are actually great, but do you mean "Art of the Dress" for Rairity's "Smile" song? I think we should have "Smile" songs for all the characters, but the only other one that is natrual to sing is Fluttershy, we may, "I'll Fly" was a great song in my opinion.

I think it  is popular do to it's upbeat lyrics, good instrumentals, and how similar to A True True Friend it showcases some of the best qualities of the show.

Such as how strong the sense of friendship in the show is or in Smile's case the strength of Pinkie Pie's character.

When I say "Smile Song" I refer to a song capturing the character and their values. Art of the Dress is my favorite, but it didn't actually capture Rarity and what she believes in and strives for. It basically portrayed the hard work in what she does.

Rules of Rarity expressed her values and shines light to what REALLY drives her to become a clothing designer: to make others feel good about themselves. To create something that makes a person smile and feel better is a precious thing. She wants to be the best, but in that episode "Canterlot Boutique" she nearly risked her business because she valued her work and values more than selling plain dresses just for business.

"I'll Fly" really didn't capture Rainbow to me. Instead, it captured her strong relationship with Tank. The song was amazing, but u wouldn't consider it a "smile" song

That's what I mean, I meant that we may get a "smile song" for other characters and "I'll fly" was a bit of a step towards that.

It's positive. It shows purpose and demonstrates that smiling is its own means to an end. Smiling is one of those things that isn't supposed to help some external cause, because smiling *itself* is its own good cause...if that makes any sense.

Besides that, it's catchy, and it's pretty much the cure to depression..at least for me.

My main problem with The Smile Song (I think that's the official song title?) is that it almost has no bearing on the episode where it comes from. It comes out of nowhere and is never brought up again. But hang on...maybe Pinkie wasn't supposed to be a main character and just a pony that the writers decided to give the spotlight for one episode. A Friend In Deed would then be the episode that introduced Pinkie. What better way to show off her personality than with a catchy, upbeat song? Actually, there are a lot of ways but whatever.

My point is, that the song came too late in the show's run. Yes, it's a season two song, that technically makes it an early song but I think this should have been one of the very first songs. We got Pinkie's Laughter Song in the second episode of season 1. This would then fully complete her personality to the viewers. Therefore, A Friend In Deed should have been one of the first episodes of the show. Of course, it wasn't and I doubt the writers even thought of this.

Anyway...about the song itself, I think it's the best song of season two, bar none. Actually, this could be one of the best moments in the entire show. No other song in the show has taught me so much about something without sounding expositional. Yes, I didn't like Rules Of Rarity.

Well, scratch that, there's a other song that taught me something without sounding expositional. And that would be Flim & Flam's Cider Song. That song tells me exactly who they are and what they are in Ponyville for...without making me lose my interest. Like B.B.B.F.F.

Wow...I do take this show way too seriously.

I see what you mean there honestly. But I'd have to disagree. This episode/song came at the perfect time. It was not TOO early....yet not TOO late.

Had this been sung in earlier within Season 1, it would not have made such an impact. It's rather boring to fully understand a character RIGHT AWAY. The fandom was raging about Pinkie Pie. Was she just some random annoying pony with a dumb element for comedic relief? Or something more? Her appearances prior to A Friend Indeed was more like a build up. You watch this pink pony behave in the strangest ways and assume "well she's just crazy". And yeah...she is....but she has a purpose that characters like her rarely have.

And that's when this episode finally gives us what we want. And it wasn't too late in my opinion. Season 1 was the appetizer and Season 2 gave us a main course of Pinkie Pie.

If there was any song that came too late it was: Rules.of Rarity. It's fine if you don't like it. But I feel as though this song took too long to get here to explain Rarity and her values. But at the same time...I can understand why the episode itself made a late appearance. It was more like Rarity getting closer yo finally completing her arc... and I.suppose the writers wanted to demonstrate just how.important those values are to Rarity and how even when she's SO close to reaching her goa after all this time, she'd throw it away determined to stay true to herself and what she believes in.

This.  Pinkie Pie, for all her silliness is a pony worthy of respect, and the Smile song shows you why.  She has this amazing transformative power of unadulterated happiness

It's a really wonderful song with a great meaning. It's not a superficial definition of happiness, and I think that is why people like it. Pinkie clearly states in the song that there are sad times, and that not everything in life is happy.
