so In the journal of the two sisters it is stated that starswirl can travel through time, sometimes appearing younger when he returns.. is it possible that starswirl never died - he just traveled through time and never came back? Or perhaps when he returns from his last time travel it will be 1000 years later by accident?

If so this would provide a great opportunity to return sometime in the series..

your thoughts?

Simply put; we don't know.

That's for the best though that as the show writers have been fairly vague in regards to him. We've been given some nice tidbits (MMC, Twilight's Kingdom) and while the comics have protrayed him they never mintioned his fate, so it really feels like the show is really building upon something here.

As the above post said; I have a feeling he may have a part to play in the movie.

I would say, he is still out there. As we type now, he is probably walking through the caves of Maretonia, or travelling through time to us...

Just one thing though, please don't make Starswirl the good guy who becomes friends with the mane 6. It worked for Discord, but it will not work for Mr the Bearded.

I support the theory that he IS discord.

When Twilight finished the spell that made her an alicorn, Celestia mentioned how Starswirl, nor anybody else had done this. When Twilight tried the broken spell, her friends cutie marks switched around. According to Celestia, Starswirl "didn't understand friendship" like twilight did. So maybe when he performed the spell, because he basically had no friends to switch cutie marks with, the spell corrupted and turned him into Discord

I explained this pretty bad, but if you want more information on this, The Brony Notion has a few good videos on it

I highly doubt that Starswirl could live for almost 2000 years, he was only a unicorn after all so he is most likely dead.

However, the show, the comics and a few other books have hinted that Starswirl did do a bit of time travelling in his lifetime so he may appear in the show.

In fact this might actually explain where the prophecy of Nightmare Moon's return came from.

Starswirl was consumed by rage after being shunned by Celestia for a Princely title, due to his one lacking of the understanding of one spell, despite his otherwise vast knowledge of magic that dwarfed that of even Celestia or Luna or any other unicorn alive.

Then he decided, why be content with being a prince... when he could take an entire Empire and become King!

in spite of the fact that he was friends with Sunbutt and Luna, in the Journal of the two Sisters, and friends with Svorpan in thr brief llre presented in "Twilight's kingdom"?

yeah I was gonna mention this - without starswirl I doubt celestia would have succeeded as much as she did in the end.

and since this season finale seems to do with time, perhaps our villain is in league with starswirl, or maybe he is involved somehow :)

They might have to make an episode about this. Bronies want to know the answer, so there should be an episode that takes place in a time when there were none of the ponies we see on most episodes. It would probably show Startswirl making all the spells and eventually showing his death, then Twi holding a book around a circle of fillies and she says ''And that's the true story of Starswirl the Bearded''. I think an episode like this will answer a lot of bronies' questions, but if Starswirl didn't die then if they were to make a Starswirl episode at all then it would be about Twi and Starswirl meeting each other.

I like to think that he ended up Falling through time at some point in an uncontrollable manner, so that he's currently popping around time ala quantum leap and the mane six will meet him at some point and talk to him before he gets pulled through time again.

I think Starswirl is "dead" in the same way that Matthew Sobol is "dead".

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daemon_%28novel_series%29

My headcanon is that the elements, the tree, and the map are all part of Starswirl's Daemon that has been running since his death.  I keep pushing this theory.  It explains everything so much better.  I'm tellin' ya, it's gonna catch on.

IF he actually did appear, say in the movie, I wouldn't be entirely opposed to it.  Depends how they would do it, but it's not like there's ever been anything concrete said, so there's a lot they could do without causing any continuity errors.  What I think would be the best is if he was featured in the movie, but only in distant flashbacks.  I.e. he's not still alive and never directly interacts with the six, but we see strategic flashbacks that piece together some kind of mind-blowing story, like he somehow knew what would happen thousands of years later or something.  Know what I mean?

How about starting the movie like this, with Starswirl in Jacob's role, and a mysterious Mare in Black, and they would be sitting in the exact spot that Ponyville is located, except it's not there, and the statue could be...like...maybe a centaur or something.  I don't know--trying to think of what would be mind-blowing.

Well, nobody can answer that question right now. Is he dead? Yes, probably. Is he alive? Well... yeah, maybe too, considering all the stuff he does with time. I think he's dead, but then, who knows :twi:
