I was listening to "hearts as strong as horses" and that got me thinking - everyone is a pony - and ponies and horses are kinda like 2 different things..

are there any actual HORSES in equestria? That clown horse Troubleshoes seemed to be the most horsey but I am unsure if he's a mule or not..

There does seem to be.

Twilight turned a bunch of mice into what she called 'horses', though with mice faces still. 'Best Night Ever'

The Saddle Arabians from 'Magic Duel' are definately not ponies, their appearance being most like Arabian Horses.

References to Hearts as Strong as Horses from 'Flight to the Finish', as you mention.

Troubleshoes from 'Appleoosa's Most Wanted' is designed to look like a Clydesdale horse, and is considerably larger than any pony.

There have been some in earlier generations, I think they might just be referencing something that isn't even in there universe, for the sake of the meaning of the song.

I wasn't sure if he was a mule or not

as for the arabian ponies, they are the size and body type of equestria, even if their faces aren't the same.

I have also noticed all the pony princess except for twilight seem to be taller somewhat than the average pony, as well as a lot of the royalty - is height now a symbol of status?

The Saddle Arabians are quite taller, about the height of Luna if not a bit taller. Which makes sense as Arabian Horses are only barely not ponies by RL terms. What makes them more horse-like in MLP is their leg structure, which is considerably thinner and far more like actual equine legs, with distinct knees and hooves. They seem to be using the same body models (but with different heads) as the mice-horses from 'The Best Night Ever'.

Princesses are taller than the average pony, yes, but there are several non-alicorn ponies that have appeared in the show that are the height of Cadance. Fluer de Lis and Sassy Saddles both use the same body model as Luna and Cadance and seem to be the same height as Cadance, a little shorter than Luna. Sapphire Shores on the other hand has a more average shaped body model, but is a almost a head taller than Rarity, making her approximately the same height as Cadance, perhaps a bit shorter. And there are several background ponies that seem to be build tall as well.

I remember Twilight's fuzzy saddle from 'Winter Wrap Up' and asked the same thing at the time.
