movies/tv Has Spongebob always been overrated?

So admittedly the first 3 seasons of Spongebob were fairly good, and went majorly downhill in quality after the first movie. However, I've seen Spongebob on top 10 greatest cartoons of all time lists and has been voted best kids cartoon at the kids choice awards 7 years in a row. Personally I think shows like MLP and Gravity Falls are better than Spongebob, even it's first 3 seasons. There were alot of good cartoons around Spongebob's time too, such as Dexter's Lab, Ed Edd n Eddy, The Powerpuff Girls, Courage, Pokemon, Hey Arnold, Rockos Modern Life, Animaniacs and several others that arguably were as good or even better than Spongebob.

I never liked it as much as everyone else, though saying that, I did used to love the pokemon anime, and looking back on it now, it's literally the same formula for every episode, so I guess it depends on the person. I think it's always been overrated except for the first movie. I did like the show, but I never understood why it was as big as it was

The first few seasons tickled a lot of people's fancy. The reason it's so panned nowadays is because they new episodes don't have the heart the first seasons did, the same heart that people loved when it first air. While I personally don't think the show is the greatest ever(I like it, but there are a lot more shows I prefer), I can see why so many people loved it initially, and I feel it's acclaim is well deserved

Actually, no. While the quality of the show drastically plummeted after the first movie, the first few seasons, looking back, they are hilarious. The amount of excellent subtle humor is everywhere in the first few seasons and I find myself laughing so much at a lot of it looking back. I might be a rarity in that though, but I find it to be really, really funny.

I never really liked it's style, I mean to other people it can be funny but I just don't understand the show's kind of jokes. I used to think a lot of my shows I watched as a kid were funny but spongebob never hit me as funny.

Old SpongeBob was awesome. I can't say much for the newer stuff because I haven't really watched it. I wouldn't go as far as to place in the top 10 cartoons of ALL TIME, but it was very good.

The plots and characters were shallow, and that is what brings it down the most, but the jokes were awesome. I've gone back and re-watched a few episodes and the jokes can get very mature for a childrens cartoon. There are a lot of jokes and references that flew over my head when I was a kid.

I think the show was actually kind of mediocre in most aspects, but the humor was so smart and spot on that it made up for the other aspects.

Different shows are great for different reasons, and what made older SpongeBob so great was how well it mixed its strongly identified characters with the situations the episodes set up. The writing of the humor worked on so many different levels with so many different styles of comedy, which is why it appealed to so many wide and diverse audiences. On account of the density and degree of the humor, it's highly rewatchable. I often make it a point to rewatch some of my old favorites whenever I'm alone with a TV that gets Nickelodeon.

In its later seasons, it did go downhill largely because of character Flanderization and growing use of shock humor. But I wouldn't deny it being one of the best cartoons. It was definitely one of the best of the cable era, especially in the 2000s when most of the animation industry was in a flux. Despite there being a few other good cartoons out there, none of them achieved the same kind of mainstream appeal SpongeBob did, but I think its run as the king of cartoons pretty much ended as the 2010s came around. Namely, Adventure Time, MLP, and Gravity Falls began to set the tone for what cartoons are like now.

Right now, it's overrated, it's attempts at humor comes mainly from Bob's and Patrick's low IQ. The first three seasons on the other hand, had well thought humor, and it was genuinely funny, so, I would say it's praise was well deserved back then, but not now
