Do you think the new Doctor Who sucks?

Recommended Posts

I've been a huge fan of doctor who ever since I was a child and though I haven't watched all episodes, I've watched most including the old ones and I loved most of them but the new series of doctor who featuring Peter I just find extremely boring.

I did give the new series and Peter when he first became the doctor a chance but it's just not as good any more. It's lost the joy and excitement it had that made me want to watch it, seeing these cool aliens and the dangers the doctor has to go through, dealing with daleks and trying to save his companion. It feels like that all has gone and is now just filled with fillers.

The aliens now are just boring and lazy, Best example i can give is the episode with the ghosts when they were underwater, the episode was called "Under the lake". I realise they are not aliens but still, when i think of doctor who, I never think of the doctor fighting bloody ghosts. Neither did i find that episode interesting or exciting... pretty sure most of it was just explaining and talking and then more explaining while they run away from the ghosts every 2 seconds.

Not the mention my hate for Clara, oh i hate her so much. She's just so boring and uninteresting compared to other companions. Not the mention that it seems when she was around, the show was completely based around her which still didn't interest me. They should of changed the name of the show to Clara who since that's what it basically was. "Scrap showing the adventures of the Doctor and aliens, plus the sonic screwdriver and lets just focus it all around Clara."

Another thing to mention is the setting of doctor who now, they've made the show a lot more kid friendly which i dislike a lot. This though doesn't really effect the show "that" much since they are only small changes but you notice them when you try and look out for them such as it no longer showing the persons skeleton when a Dalek kills them.

I've not got much to say about the new Doctor. He's not great but neither is he bad. I think the main problem is just the stories he's being put into, nothing more then fillers.

I know that a lot of people most likely will disagree with me about my opinions on the new doctor who but really... it's just a opinion and not something i want you to take personally. If you enjoy the new doctor who then cool.

But i stand by my point and i truly think the show should just be cancelled before it's too late. This show has gone on for many years and had such great episodes but it's clear to see that the show is running out of ideas and is slowly dying out. (Getting rid of the sonic screwdriver what!?)

What are your opinions on the new doctor who, do you enjoy them or hate them?

I'm in the same boat.

When I gave Doctor Who a shot I started off with the Classic Series and progressed from there. I've seen pretty much every single episode minus the early stories that were destroyed because the BBC didn't care about preserving shows and with that in mind I can safely say that the Classic Series is by far superior to the modern series. I thought the Christopher Eccleston era was bland. David Tennant's Era while pretty good, I wouldn't say his stories were quite as good as most of the classic doctors'. Matt Smith's era, while I enjoyed Matt's performance as the Doctor 2/3rds of his tenure was a mess from a storytelling perspective and while I haven't seen series 9 yet, so far Peter Capaldi's tenure I thought was worse than Colin Baker's and like the Colin Baker era, it isn't the fault of the actors, rather it's the fault the writers.

And yeah, I'm not fond of Clara either, in fact, she's probably one of my least favorite companions in the show's history. She was more of a plot device than a character in the last season of Matt Smith's tenure, she warped the lore of Doctor Who around her, pretty much hogged the spotlight in most of the stories while the Doctor was playing second fiddle, got away with things other companions certainly would not have gotten with away with (when she tried to make the Doctor think she was destroying TARDIS keys so that he would help her get Danny back, when in reality the Doctor was playing her to see how far she would go), she had the Doctor fawning all over her so she pretty much had him at her beck and call, and from a narrative perspective anyone who questioned her was in the wrong. She pretty much is the textbook definition of a Mary Sue.

So, yes, I do have to agree that the new Doctor Who is not very good.

You can go on and on about your David Tennant and your Matt Smith all you like but no Doctor will ever be able to top this guy!

Also just a short note. Getting rid of the Sonic Screwdriver is nothing new. They destroyed the Sonic Screwdriver back in the Peter Davison era (Fifth Doctor) and it didn't appear again until Paul McGann's movie. So this isn't a crazy thing they're trying. They did this before in the classic series so that the Doctor wouldn't be over-reliant on it. Something he has been in the modern show.

I like the 10th doctor myself, he is the best out of what I have seen, I am not really a fan of the 11th doctor. Although I have not watched much doctor who

I haven't seen the classic series, so I can't talk about that, but I can talk about my opinions on Capaldi's seasons. While he isn't really my favorite Doctor, he isn't bad. His stories aren't as good as they were in Eccleston, Tennant, and Smiths' seasons, they aren't bad. The second to last episode is actually something against your claim about Clara. You said that Clara was just kind of to big of a focus, and that the Doctor is just fawning after her. Well, yeah. The Doctor loves her. In the second to last episode, he was stuck in a confession dial that the Timelords used to torture him for information. Rather then reveal it, he spent nearly 5 billion YEARS to get back to Clara and keep her safe. What else would you classify as love? Now to the aliens. The Episode you were talking about was actually an incredibly interesting two-parter. I would explain, but you missed a lot and I don't want to spoil it. However, it has been lacking in very interesting aliens. The other series did much better on creativity. Now just for the sonic screwdriver. It is not gone, he got it back, he just didn't use it much, and now it's been replaced again.

I guess i have missed quite a bit but i still stand by my point. I only stopped watching it since i don't enjoy it anymore sadly

My first exposure to Doctor Who was the season with Christopher Eccleston as the doctor. I watched that season and the next two religiously, but sometime during the final season with David Tennant, I completely burned out on it. I'm not sure what happened.

Anyway, I haven't seen any of the episodes with Matt Smith or Peter Capaldi, so I can't comment on the direction the series has taken. Maybe I should have another go at it.

I started watching doctor who at the same time as you when Christopher Eccleston was the doctor but i still watched the older episodes. I've watched almost every episode from Christopher Eccleston till now and all i can say from my opinion is...

The series with David Tennant i enjoyed quite a bit apart from a couple of episodes. The series with Matt Smith i didn't really enjoy that much and i prefer David to Matt anyday as the doctor. Matt Smith wasn't a horrible doctor but during his time, the filler episodes started to show up more.

Finally with Peter, He's not a horrible doctor but the series he's in is i find. It just seems full of fillers and was mainly driven along by Clara because it was just all about her -_-.

In my opinion i wouldn't suggest watching the series with Peter in since there nothing really interesting about it unless you want to learn where Clara has been 24/7 or see really boring aliens with no point of being on Earth... they are just... there.

I have to say I liked Matt Smith the most out of the past 4. Maybe it's because I started with him, but I think of him when I think of the doctor.

Ah, okay then. Thanks. I may try watching it again at some point, but I won't make it a priority. I'll put it on the backburner for now.

My favourite Doctor is actually the 13th Doctor (Generally called the 12th but I count the War Doctor as the 9th) series 8 was pretty disappointing but series 9 was a lot better in my opinion, also I can see parts of me in the current Doctor, especially after the Christmas special with his obvious dislike for Christmas music which for anyone who works in retail is an easily understood feeling, the only series 9 episode I didn't enjoy was Sleep no more because what has the world come to when the episodes enemy is Sleep dust, the stuff in the corners of your eyes, that just isn't right...

I'm sorry but I stopped watching Doctor Who years ago. Most of the new, and when I say new I mean in the last 20 odd years, just don;t hold a candle to the original Doctors.

Gone are the days for me of hiding behind the sofa in abject terror at the sight of a Dalek or Cyberman in black and white on Saturday evening TV :pinkie:

I think it was when they introduced Sylvester McCoy as the new Doctor that ruined it for me, and the only two Doctors I ever liked after that were David Tenant and Christopher Eccleston.

I am starting to watch classic who since when it first came out my dad was only 2 years old and my mum wasn't yet born, I hadn't had exposure to it, but personally so far I don't really like the first doctor, he spent the first two stories being a generic grumpy old man style character but with a time machine which just seemed stupid, I can't comment on any other iterations of the Doctor until New Who as of yet but I found Eccleston to be my second favourite and Capaldi to be my favourite, Tennant was the Doctor for more time than was good for development and so the series began to feel a bit stale, then Matt Smith came in and I found him to be too happy go lucky, and for the most parts serious stories felt a bit weaker with that style of character, also the writing in his stories was weak, as I say, I can't comment much on Classic Who but I am working my way through it slowly, I am currently as far as the serial where they are searching for the keys so that the Voord can be controlled.

Why exactly is this in the debate pit?

And why does anyone like Danny Pink? He seems weird and annoying, and I only started liking him when he became a Cyberman.

It's in the debate thread since anyone could easily argue with my opinion or others but it seems no one has argued with anyone's opinion yet.

Yeah, this really isn't turning out to be Debate Pit material. So I'm sending it off to Everfree Media.

Now, to be on-topic: I've watched Doctor Who since it started broadcasting in Ontario back in the 70's with the Third Doctor (Jon Pertwee). And he remains my favourite Doctor, of course. I was hoping that Capaldi would hearken back to that period, but his stories have missed the mark pretty far. His run resembles the worst parts of the Colin Baker run... which was most of it.

Now I do admit that this last Christmas special episode was a lot of silly fun and I enjoyed that. But prior to that I have not been enjoying Capaldi's run. The actor is perfectly capable of doing the role, but the writing has sucked on average. And the problems with Clara being the center of attention has been true for most of the companions in the modern series, especially with Rose and Amy. The whole 'I can do anything, because my *boyfriend* will save me.' attitude is so massively irritating...

I appreciate what RTD and Moffat have done, and they can be really good individual episode writers when they *focus* on that episode, but honestly they're not very good at overseeing the storylines stretched out over the entire series.

Capaldi's run I really haven't liked; Smith was great until Clara. I'm not sure if I don't like DW anymore because i'm older so the magic's gone, or it just isn't that good in terms of quality. I'm going with the latter; there have been quite a few shows and games that have sparked the same magic DW used to give in the past few years, so i'm just thinking DW has lost its spark.

Tennant is possibly my favorite season; it was the one I used to watch so in my opinion is was just such a fun, original, and magical season. Donna best companion.

Smith was... okay. So okay, it was average. Amy was a good character, and I really liked her, same with Rory and River. The episodes felt a bit dull and too complicated, though. Wasn't as fun as Tennant. It went downhill when Clara came, I really don't like her concept.

Capaldi is a good actor, but the writing... ick! I'm sure that Capaldi, if given a good, magical script, would work wonders, but that hasn't happened so far... also is Clara gone yet? The story is/was revolving around her and I really don't like that.

Clara is gone, she actually stuck to her word and left the show like she said she would before only this time for real, and I totally wasn't in tears when it happened, I swear :P

This year's Christmas Special 'The Husbands of River Song' was without Clara. We'll have to wait until next year to see if she's really gone or not, as the writers have left a big loophole open if the actress changes her mind.

Though the way that they ended it, if they brought her back then it would hardly work as she had to go back to her fate even if she took a bit longer to do so, if she came back then it would be an excuse to forget a major plot point, so I highly doubt she will come back.

Tennant has been my favourite so far. I started following heavily during Matt (who was a brilliant Doctor), and then I went back and rewatched all of it and fell in love with Tennant. Capaldi has been... Somewhat underwhelming, in some cases. The episodes have been somewhat lack-luster, and not due to his acting - he could play a brilliant Doctor, but they just have not been making episodes tailored to his strengths. I don't see Capaldi shining through as his own character, instead I feel more like they're still writing for Matt. It's getting better as time progresses, but I just don't know. It's different.

I have watched some of the original series, and I have watched everything with the ninth, tenth, and eleventh Doctor, and I loved all of that. However, since Peter Capaldi became the doctor, I haven't been able to enjoy it as much. The more I watch, the more the new Doctor grows on me, but I don't think I will ever enjoy it as much as I enjoyed David Tennant.

ACtualy her contract expired so she NOT coming back into the who universe. yeah it meta info but still.   and yeah have to admit the claria thing was rediclous to extremes. also the doctor being hip and cool with the dam guatar and sonci glasses crap.. ugh!! yeah cuas when yo uthink Who you think guaitar!!

Peter Capaldi's Doctor is honestly amazing to me, especially after series 9. With his performances in episodes like the Zygon Inversion and Heaven Sent. I'm not entirely sure I have a favorite Doctor, but if I had to pick just one it might be him. Also, I personally love the whole "Rock-tor" thing with the Sonic Sunglasses and the guitar. It fits this incarnation, the Doctor's always been kind of ridiculous. 2 and his recorder? 4 with his silly scarf and Jelly babies? 6 and his...literally everything?

I loved Matt Smith's Doctor too though. Overall I'd say I like the Moffat era more than the RTD one, though both have their strengths and weaknesses. Moffat has a bit of a problem tying up arc's, but he's really toned that down for Capaldi.

I said that I doubt she would come back, and even if her contract has expired she can technically negotiate a new contract if she REALLY wanted to, though they probably would be reluctant to do so. Also I found the guitar to be interesting, sure it wasn't necessary but it added to his character, the sunglasses annoyed me a lot though.

I love new who and classic who equally. It is running out of ideas? Not from my PoV , no. If anything Doctor Who is stronger than ever and yes the shows has its flaws, so what ever show does. I love every Doctor equally. I will say I love Moffat more than RTD because well RTD 3/4 times  used Daleks for his finales, yeah that didnt get predictable after well. None of the less, I still  Doctor Who both classic and new. Heck, I listen to the audio drama which they are many to choose form. So no New Who doesn't "suck". I think Doctor Who is doing just fine.
