Midnight looked skeptically over at Copper with a distinctly raised eyebrow, but he didn't say anything. If anything he seemed to be looking through Copper to something else.

 

He turned back towards Dinky, the fatherly smile back on his face. "Princess Sparkle would definitely be a good pony to learn from, I'm sure you'll do great in time."

 

Midnight remembered Gari had always been an excellent teacher of magic, and each one more magically gifted than the last. He thought about offering her services to teach Dinky magic, but decided against it, he wouldn't want to make Ditzy think she should give up her child for a bit.

Ditzy nodded at Midnight after his response.  "I talked to her about it, and she agreed to give her lessons on magic, from what she knows from Princess Celestia."

 

Dinky beamed with delight at the two friends and mother.  She knows she has great support from them, and she would do well with Twilight.

Midnight gave another slight smile as he raised himself up to his full height. "Well, I expect I'll hear great things about you two in the future. I really should get going now though, it is getting kind of late and traveling by train has always taken quite a bit out of me. Fare well you two."

 

With that he turned in the direction of Copper's house and started to walk away at an even pace.

Ditzy and Dinky nodded at Midnight after his response.  Copper yawned, saying, "Those train rides took a bit out of me as well.  I need some sleep myself.  Goodnight, you two."

 

After giving their good-nights, they split up and went to their homes, Copper keeping pace with Midnight.

 

When they got to Copper's house, Copper opened the door for entering, and said, "So you'll be leaving soon, depending on how tomorrow goes?  That's a shame.  In that case, I'll be sure to visit Archback when I can.  It's a great place to me."

Midnight looked over at Copper, "It's hardly a shame, but an even split. We each spent our time in the other's world and the time is swiftly coming where we will have to part ways. There is no shame there."

 

He sighed, "Don't worry about visiting Archback again so soon, you have a nice life here with ponies that care about you, they are far more deserving of your attention than I am."

Copper nodded in understanding.  "That's right.  I never did say I'd visit Archback again so soon, but I will visit, and I'll send you a letter saying so.  It'll be when I get a week off, just so you know.  I sometimes travel when that happens, whether it be back at my first home in Appaloosa, or as far as the Crystal Empire."

Midnight nodded, "Express notice is always appreciated, especially given the Equestrian room is now occupied for the foreseeable future."

 

Midnight was simply tired, and though he tried hard not to show it, he was really beginning to worry about the Order and their progress without him. Sir was capable after all, but he was hardly practiced in managing the order.

Copper nodded.  "I'll find a place to sleep in if I get back there, don't worry."

 

His eyes widened when he saw Midnight looked worried, and he knew exactly what it was that he was worried about.  "You're worried about the Order, aren't you?  You care deeply about them and want to see their progress, don't you?  You'll see them again soon, I promise it.  In fact, I want go back to Archback with you and meet them as well.  I wanna say something to them anyways.

Midnight turned back towards Copper, again suspecting him of being a mind reader, he sighed. "I know I'll see them again, and perhaps this time apart will be good for them, I just don't want to have been gone when they needed me. I know it may be a silly thought, they're all full grown adults and they can handle themselves, I just hope they're ready for what's coming. They're so close to achieving what all the generations before them had sought."

 

He shook his head, "Let's not worry about that now though, let's get some rest and enjoy one last day before we head back up to Archback."

Copper nodded brightly at the response.  "All right, then.  We got a long day ahead of us tomorrow.  Goodnight, Midnight."

 

He then trotted to his room, but before going to sleep, he thought to himself, What could possibly go wrong for tomorrow?  He then crawled onto his bed and went to sleep.

Midnight too headed for his room, staring out at the sky far a bit before getting in to his bed. He couldn't shake the feeling that he should have waited a bit longer before coming with Copper, should have made sure that they would be alright. He sighed again before he drifted off to sleep, it was too late to change that now. He'd be back with them soon enough.

[Entering final day]

 

It was business as usual in Ponyville.  Ponies woke up, and went about with their business.  Copper once again made Midnight's breakfast, but this time he stayed in the kitchen and made his own while waiting for the older stallion to wake up.  It was the weekend, the time when he doesn't work.

Midnight entered the kitchen like he had the previous few days, though he was surprised to see that Copper was waiting for him this time. "Good morning Copper, you sleep well?"

 

He idly wondered what Copper had prepared today and what the smaller stallion had planned for them today.

Copper nodded at Midnight.  "Yep.  I did sleep well.  It happens to be the weekend, so I'm free to do what I please, as I don't work on said days of the week."

 

He brought Midnight's food, to which it was the same as yesterday, and sat it on his side while he prepared his.  "So did you sleep well?"

Midnight shrugged, "Oh, as well as could be expected. I don't really get days off regularly, leading a city-state is a pretty full time job. Besides, international conflicts rarely come when they're convenient to me."

 

He sat down to begin eating what Copper had prepared, "So, you have anything planned for today?"

Copper nodded at Midnight after setting his tray down to eat.  "Usually I take this time to train with my Spin Dash.  Allows me to keep up with the racing Pegasi whenever I want.  I have an area outside of Ponyville where I can do such things."

 

He began to eat his breakfast as well.  "What plans do you have, Midnight?"

Midnight looked slightly nonplussed at the fact Copper didn't really have anything planned. "I guess I could wander around town today, see if anything catches my interest. Other than that I'll be packing up tonight so I can get an early start on the trip back tomorrow. That or I may simply leave tonight, night travel has always been my favorite since it is the coolest and quietest part of the day."

Copper nodded, then shrugged at Midnight's response. "I see. Well, why don't I show you my training area? It's a hill area where I use my Spin Dash in the grassy terrain, and I practice my running as well as Spin Dashing. I don't mind if I have a crowd, or even just one pony."

Midnight shrugged, "Well, I guess I don't have anything better to do today, I might as well."

 

Midnight thought that things were getting pretty lack-luster as of late, perhaps the whole Doo incident had taken a lot out of him. The actual changing of the course of history was a tiring concept to imagine for those who understood its far-reaching effects.

It took a couple of minutes, but Copper was finished with his breakfast. After finishing, he took his plate and put it in his dishwasher, which appeared to be nearly full. "Better dry my dishes once I get back from Archback for another time." He grunted, walking to the table with a watered rag, cleaning his side of the table.

Midnight raised an eyebrow at Copper's comment, surprised that Copper either intended to come to Archback again really soon, or that he had no intention of drying his dishes in the near future.

 

The area around his hoof shimmered as he swept a foreleg across his end of the table, quickly and easily gathering any residue that remained on the table.

Copper was surprised that Midnight did his side of the table.  He gave the older stallion a confident look.  "You didn't have to do that, Midnight.  You're a guest.  You should leave the cleaning to the host."  He knew it sounded weird, but it was true.  "It's how I was raised.  My family always cleans for the guests."

Midnight gave a slightly smug expression, "And I'm sure if I had a traditional family I'd be able to say that we always clean up after ourselves, but really I'm the only one I can speak for in my own family, with my parents dead and no decedents of my own that is." He gave a wistful sigh, "Nonetheless, I am content to clean up after myself, I hope when I depart to leave no trace I was ever here."

Copper nodded at Midnight.  "Understandable.  Thanks for cleaning up, Midnight.  Once you put your dishes in the dishwasher, I can turn it on."

 

He then thought about going back to Archback, then said, "I change my mind about going back to Archback.  But can you send a message to Order?  Tell them that I will support them for whatever they do in the future, and that I will help when needed, all they have to do is give me a holler."

Midnight gave a snort at that and rolled his eyes slightly as he placed his dishes in the washer similar to how Copper had placed his.

 

"I don't know how much you'd be able to help them in what they're doing, but I'm sure they'll appreciate the sentiment. I'll be sure to tell them though. "
