Hey evrypony.

I am really struggeling with my art, i made alot of art of my oc, but i just think that my art is just not good.

I tried to make art of my oc the way i want it to look, but i just cant..

the closest i could get to my oc where these 2 art things i made:

AWnZPEI.png

N52ScvM.png

They made seem good to some, but wat i really want to create is the entire body (and give them a more facial look, i  really suck at that)

I really want to try recreate my oc like this:

IpCbt09.jpg

(ofcourse without the armour, clothes and weapons, just the body design)

Does anyone have some tips for me or anything?

Since paint.net doesn't work on my pc anymore, i am forced to use gimp, but that program has way to many difficult things for me to use ><.

It's called time and patience.

You can't expect to finish a piece of art in less than a day, you usually have to go over mistakes you've made and fix them.

Also, try to look up anatomy of cartoon bodies, or whatever you can find to examine from to get a good idea.

thats true, but still, i kept trying over and over since the past months, but some turned out like this...: http://i.imgur.com/GDNzaG7.png

But thanks for the advice, i will try what you said :)

I would say some shading to add a bit of depth

That is something that i am trying to learn, i am always impressed how people can make such good art here. For me it takes loads and loads of concentration to actually get something decent done. shading was never my best part with making art, but i am still learning on that xD

What I find helps with shading is temporarily mark out where the light is coming from , for example if it is directly behind them then the chest area will be shadowed, and if they are looking straight forward the front of the face will be shadowed , you can also draw temporary light rays to show what parts would be lit up and what parts would be shadowed

The shading on this is very far from perfect but you get the jist, I tend to shade pixel by pixel, takes alot of patience

Lots of practice and looking at references!

It's something I also need to work on as well, but I've heard many times that you have to just keep on going and getting better from just doing it. ^^

Thats true :). i used to have gimp as my main editing tool, but a few min ago a good friend of mine introduced me to a new art program. i am trying to figure out how it works now :)

Hey evryone. i followed your advices and i managed to make something new, i hope this looks better then my previous ones becus this is the first one where you see the actual body  :) RetnG41.png

My only tips are really (since I myself am a beginning artist):

1. Watch as many online tutorials as you can, especially ones on shading and color theory.

2. Borrow books from your library to help you learn how to draw characters.

3. Look on deviantART for references and try to emulate the techniques of some of your favorite artists.

The picture you're going for is REALLY complex and detailed, you're going to have to understand a lot about drawing, anatomy, and color. Heck, I'm still waiting for the day I can draw something like this:

But it looks like, from your reference pic, you'll want to study up on shading, anthropomorphic anatomy, and drawing folded and creased fabric.

Here are some tutorials you might want to check out.

Get physical with it. Tire yourself out by making fast, sketchy lines with sharp arm movements. Treat the stylus pen like it was a paintbrush; make brushstrokes. Rather than define a figure, "suggest" it with ambiguous outlines and freer boundaries.

  • 4 weeks later...

As some other people suggested, shading is a great way to add some depth and make your art look more realistic. You are on track and I can totally tell that you have a LOT of potential! Good luck on creating your OC! That pic is so awesome! Post pics when you're done!!
