gaming What was the hardest difficulty from a game you played?

The only game I've actually ever played seriously on Hard Mode was Prototype 2 and even then it's ridiculously easy, especially once you get the bulletproof mutation (which is why it's always a good idea to 100% every island before progressing anywhere)

But the final boss (for me) kicked my flank so many times; on any other difficulty, you get some health back on every new stage

Hard Mode doesn't do that and he can take out all of your health in a matter of seconds

Even with everything maxed out, it took me several tries until I finally found a rhythm of shield/claws that let me win

I know it's a bit cliche, but Ghosts N Goblins. I managed to stagger through to stage 3 but I never got further than that. Zelda 2 would be another one.

The hardest game I've ever beaten is probably the original Castlevania. I was able to make it to the final boss of the original Ninja Gaiden but ultimately threw in the towel when I died and found myself having to redo the three hardest stages in the game.

Well, I don't quite remember the name, but it was a FPS on the PS2. It was hard enough on easy mode, but then I decided it would be a great idea to put it up to "God" mode. Couldn't get past the tutorial at first

Of course, I succeeded, but then I realized that "God" mode essentially meant "Realistic. But Only You". Every bullet had a chance to instantly kill me. But the enemies were equivalent to tanks. Not big guys with armor, literal tanks. With steel plating. Covered in bedrock. And my bullets were rubber ducks. And not the ones from Hot Shot.

Needless to say, this was the first virtual hell I went through.

Some years ago there was this sort of gathering with my siblings revolved around playing Super Smash Bros. Melee on adventure mode hard. We eventually made it up to the last level (hours and hours; a half a day's labor) -- Giga Bowser, Ganondorf, and Mewtwo I believe were the enemies. I wasn't the one one who won but I certainly came close because I seem to have a talent with spuradic button mashing.

There was this one level on a Sonic game.. Sonic: Unleashed.. Where i was pulling an all-nighter gaming session to complete it..

I was on the Eggman Land level and at this point i have had so much tea (the drinking kind) that i was wide-eyed with caffeine and sugar that

I was highly responsive to game events and timing my turns and stuff.. Eventually I gave up on the level after like.. 40 attempts.. 2 hours later..

The next morning I went to try again, but as i wasn't hyped up on sugar and caffeine that time, i literally couldn't make it past the FIRST turn O_O
I never ended up completing the game.. but it was fun nonetheless.. Also i grew to really like that Chip character :)

I always choose the highest difficulty available for my first playthrough, and then occasionally add in some self-imposed restriction to make it even harder on myself (almost a guarantee if the game only has one difficulty setting). I love a challenge.

- Hard on Command & Conquer 3: Not the entire game, but specifically the last Nod level. That one was an absolute nightmare, even on Normal, let alone Hard. You are tasked with defending a really dumb ally (who is hostile to you) from two massive enemy bases, and you start out with a very small one. Have fun!

I don't remember the last Nod level being too bad (I vaguely recall the AI struggling with the chasms and being a bit dim) but that may just have been because 'Operation Stiletto' a few levels before (capturing the enemy bases and not letting either side destroy the other) was such a nightmare. I managed it, though and C&C3 was one of the few games I got 100% on.

Starcraft II Brutal? I didn't even try that. Hard was quite hard enough for me (although I only ever played WoL). In RTS games I generally tend to avoid the highest difficulties due to the AI's tendency to cheat in some way and my limited APM.

The hardest game I had a serious go at would probably be Xenonauts on the highest difficulty (superhuman, I think it was.) I pushed through the 60-80% casualties for the first few missions, but it didn't take long for me to realise that I was completely out of my depth and that it would only get worse. I could manage veteran with some save reloading (high-end UFO assaults are always a risky business) and normal with practically no reloading, but the accuracy and toughness of the aliens was simply too high on superhuman.

Honourable mention should also go to Wargame: European Escalation, where you would have a finite number of units to get through a campaign (against a vastly superior number of enemy units, which sometimes respawned indefinitely) and units died very quickly if you made a mistake. Whilst there would usually be enough tanks available to take losses, losing too many recon units would put an end to the campaign even if you won the battle as good recon was vital to getting through a mission. And recon units had very low availability, despite their cheap cost to deploy. I pushed through the two earlier NATO campaigns, but could never bring myself to finish the Warsaw Pact campaigns.

The toughest game I actually finished I'm not sure about. Possibly Xenonauts on Veteran (penultimate difficulty) although Dawn of War II was extremely punishing on Primarch (highest) difficulty unless you were really patient.

Castlevania for the NES. I took me 20 years or so of playing to actually beat it.

Ghosts & Goblins is impossibly hard, to the point of not being fun after 10 minutes of playing, so I'm going to say Castlevania, because that game was fun.

Zelda 2 was also incredibly hard, but lots of fun and worth beating after years and years of playing.

Pretty much @@Sonic Shimmer and me feel the same.

Master Chief Collection Legendary run, Solo. Holy hell, playing Halo 1,2,3,and 4 in a row on Legendary was insane O_o Not only do enemies do more damage and there are more of them, they actually get smarter and use some tactics against you. It was insane, and it basically ended up being like the movie Live Die Repeat XP But hey, got to say it was worth it :D

Second hardest would probably be Star Wars: Empire at War on hardest difficulty. I had to blow up THREE Death Stars, and spend half of my time wondering were the hec the Empire was getting all these resources from !

Oh boy. Unless you count games that are actually broken and impossible to complete...I think the hardest I've played personally is Fester's Quest for the NES. I love that game, always have and always will, but the difficulty is ridiculous. You needed a Turbo controller just to stand a chance. (Fortunately I had one...still haven't beaten it, though.)

The commercial from 1989 says it all.

Agreed, Operation Stiletto was a huge pain. Though if you use planning mode, it becomes super easy. Since they don't attack you until you aggravate them, you can capture all objective structures at the same time, then just mop up the leftovers.

Kane's Tower, though, was much harder in my opinion. The last time I played it, I remember the GDI frequently sent out huge waves, usually 1-2 Mammoth Tanks with 6-8 Predators. :eww: The Scrin AI was not he brightest either, it had built its superweapon in front of its defenses.

There's also that GDI mission now that I think about it, where you have to switch power between defenses, while escorting an MCV from a Nod-filled city to your base. That was quite frustrating too.

I'm not much of a gamer that really focuses on difficulties, but if I were to chose one from my childhood.

Just one word......HEROIC.

Playing higher difficulties is more than just about finding a challenge, of course. Personally I don't much care if a game is super easy or not but if you regularly play on a higher difficulty you'll have less trouble with games that come along that are harder by default than other games are on hard mode.

Keeping up with the curve is important when you play a lot of games. When a Dark Souls or XCOM comes out and everyone else is having trouble you can make these games so much easier on yourself if their difficulty is nothing new to you.

And that's why games like Dark Souls are so hard for most. They treat hard mode like it's some sort of higher ground and don't play it normally. Hard mode is the normal playing field for those of us who regularly play on it so games in general are easier and we can fully enjoy games that come out and want to chew you up without having to get caught up in the struggle.

I did veteran for all the CoDs that would give me a platinum up to, but excluding, MW3. I don't know how many that is because I forgot the order a long time ago, but I remember being prone A LOT. The sniper battle in WaW and the Vietnam barrel section(?) in Blops were intense.

And crushing difficulty for Uncharted 2, but I'm almost positive I bought the one-hit kills cheat after beating it on the difficulty before that. There's no way I could've resisted that temptation.

I've yet to get more than a few missions into the first Devil May Cry. The shadow wolves are now regular enemies and they are ridiculously hard to deal with when there's two of them attacking you.

</reasons I'll never be able to play Dante Must Die>

WHAT KIND OF GAMER AM I. :(

OH YEAH.... MIRRORS EDGE.. THE HELL WITH THAT FREAKING GAME. WHY DOES FAITH HAVE TO BE SO VULNERABLE!??!?!?!?

She's skinny as all hell, wears no protection whatsoever cuz it'll slow her down and bullets tend to hurt. That about sums it up. :D
