Howdy. I was thinking just curious...what do all of you do? As much as it'd be nice to get paid to watch My Little Pony, it's not happening...right? So what do you do for a job or career. Even side jobs.

My career:

Former theatre teacher. Stayed at home after daughter borm. Looking to get another job in this next school year. Although I'm open for a career change.

Voice actor, on-camera...but not where in my career I want to be and don't know how long I can push for it.

Side jobs:

ebay flipper, occasional mturker, just signed up for TaskRabbit.

Dream one day jobs:

Bar owner, child play place, real estate flipper.

I hope you guys feel comfortable enough to share and we can learn about what we do between episodes of Friendship Is Magic.

I wish you luck with your career change, or finding your way to one of your dream jobs. ;) They all sound just great!

( Also, ebay flipping sounds fun. It sounds like something that could be good money if you're knowledgeable/skilled in that area. :P )

Anyways. I'm a full time undergrad student preparing for a career somewhere between biochemistry and computer science. I'm currently in year three of... six or so.

On the side, I'm hired on as the tumblr artist for this site, and I make some money through art commissions. :grin2:

That's an interesting topic. I'm curious what kind of answers it'll gather...

As for me, back in my student years I used to write history tests for high school students and occasionally show up on mass events as a security guard (they needed brainy types who could speak in a foreign language, since they had more than enough dumb muscle).

Once I entered "serious" job market (while studying for my Public Health major), I caught 2 part time jobs in medical companies - a hospital and later a clinic respectively, as a junior specialist responsible for selliing medical services to the public payer, and later insurance companies too.

Nowadays I do the same, just in a private minicorporation witch owns 2 hospitals and a slew of clinics across the country. My job has 2 major characteristics - responsibility and boredom. Being a corpodrone is not fun.

If you asked me what my dream job is, I'd had a hard time answering that one. I think I could do well, and actually enjoy, setting up healthcare after disasters or martial conflicts, maybe as part of a UN or Red Cross mission. Just give me a region with no healthcare to speak of and order me to do what I can to to set it upright and I'll be happy doing what I studied for those past 5 years... Not that anyone would allow me - physicians hog all the jobs in such areas, it seems.

Right after I finish my college studies next month, I have a part-time job waiting for me from a landscaping/maintenance/sales company called Canadian Property Stars (or CPS) and hope to work immensely hard with them mentally and physically to earn for what I am worth (and I'm worth it, I'll tell you that).

At the same time however, I kind of am already on my way to my dream job as an independent media producer with my very own production company "JonnySel Productions" doing freelance photography and videography work, as well as creating content for YouTube, SoundCloud, DeviantArt, etc. Sooner or later of course, I'm going to need to create a crew for my company but at the same time stay as an indie production company (basically, to not being bought out by a major firm unless it's the absolute right thing to do at the moment offers are made).

The main reason I applied with CPS for after my studies is because of the potential earnings I may get when I work for them, so I can upgrade some equipment in a faster pace to make the A/V quality of my videos and short films better than now (even though my videos are currently still very tolerable atm).

However, I only plan on working with CPS part-time until the end of August. As I intend to make a profit with my production company from there. If it doesn't happen for whatever reason, of course I may have to apply for more part-time work to compensate.

For the moment I am a full time student, but I'll be graduating in the spring with a degree in Zoology. From there, I'll likely take up the job I was offered giving dog training classes at PetCo, with perhaps some internship or research on the side. I'll hold this job likely for as long as I stay in the area before moving to a place with better opportunities for me. Ultimately, I think it would be amazing to work at a large zoo or wildlife center, or even just keep working with dogs and other pets. As long as I get to work with animals, I imagine I'll be pretty content  :squee:

Well, I am now currently unemployed. I quit my job as a grocery store boxboy last week. I have previously worked as a farmhand, a cameraman, a security guard for a Remedy Drive concert, and a judge's assistant for the 2014 ND State Speech event.

I would love a job writing, maybe as a newspaper editor. I had a mock interview with the editors of my town's paper, and they were quite impressed (a fact I am especially proud of).

If you know a little bit about some specialty items, or have good hunches, it really works well. Or if you have a smart phone, you can check what's sold on ebay recently while at the thrift store.

Some examples:

A Scrooge McDuck doll. I threw it in my shopping cart on the hunch. I looked it up and saw it sold recently for 30 bucks. I paid .99...a few weeks later I sold it for $60.

My wife bought a sealed Blue's Clues toy for 99 cents, without looking it up, just a hunch on those types of toys. We sold it for $120!

Doing this for a couple years paid for our family vacation to Disney World.

Well, I'm just in 7th grade, so I don't exactly have a job (technically allowed this fall though). However, there are a few jobs I would like. I really want to write, and I'm currently writing a book. If not that, I'd like to be an engineer. Not sure what kind (I've got quite a few years to decide), but engineering is a good job option.

I used to be a night shift manager in a pizza joint. Though i was offered to become a vice manager, i politely declined and quit. The job's getting too tiresome for me, and now that im about to finish my Bachelor's it's high time i pursue my true profession. I work in a student's position in a Tech firm, and while not glorious, it keeps me going.

When I got out of school in 2004, I got a summer job at a sleep away camp. I worked on the kitchen staff for about 7 weeks. After the summer job, I got a job working at wawa.( for everyone that doesn't know what that is, think along the lines of a 7-11 or a quick chek or pretty much, any conveinance store you have near you)

I was promoted from basically stocking shelves, to making coffee, etc. etc. etc.

Then In 2007, I got a part time movie theater job as a ticket taker/ usher.

To this day I still have both part time jobs.

My dream job: if I was a lot younger like maybe 20-25 I'd have to say baseball player. Now? I think at my age all I want is to be at a job that pays u a butt load of money for nothing.

After I graduated from school in '08, I ended up going to college twice, first for accounting, the second a year later for something in computer programming. Neither worked out, however. Turns out finding a job at the time was nearly impossible, seeing the so-called "Great Recession" hit at the worst possible time for me. Couldn't keep up with payments for the schools, had to leave. A couple years ago, I started working a couple hours a week unloading the truck at a convenience store in town. I started  on cashier last year, and SOMEHOW I'm up for Assistant Manager starting next week.

Life.

Is.

Weird.

I'm still a college student, so yeah - my degrees aren't quite there yet.

On the side, however, I work for a nightclub during the weekends.  :twi:

Well, even tough i am 16 years old still, i am planning on getting a job when im older (probelly around the age of 21 or so).

The funny thing is that i develop small games in my free time, so i am planning on going into the gaming industrie.

The bad thing is that in where i love getting a job like that wont cut it and is very hard to find, so i am planning on moving to the United States when i am older. It may still be a dream but it could become possible. (well, that possibility is probelly one in a million, but i will still try xD)

If you really love developing games, I would suggest you make connections with others ASAP.

If you are serious about going into the gaming industry, I would also suggest you create a LinkedIn account so you can connect with professionals and even adult friends of yours who are on LinkedIn.

Whenever you do happen to create a LinkedIn account, don't hesistate to invite me to connect with you. The link to my LinkedIn Profile is located below my signature. ;)

Keep on doing what you love to do. You may eventually get somewhere. :)

I am a full time undergrad student getting my teaching credential and graduating this year! I have wanted to be a teacher since I was like 5 so I'm so glad that I get to spend my life doing what I love! If you are curious, I am teaching kindergarten through 5th grade, although 4th grade is my favorite! Also, I'm a party host and buildabear workshop!

Awesome! My single biggest piece of advice: when jib hunting, try and find out the reputation of the principal of the school you're applying too. A good principal can make a bad school great, and a mean principal can makea great school the most mmiserable experience of your life.

I worked two years at a school in the most dangerous precinct in NYC, kids stabbed me with pencils and 5 year olds threw F-bombs at me. Principal was nice and supportive. I switched to a middle school in a nice area of Queens: principal was evil and made my life hell. She was worse than Cinch at Crystal Prep. Sure enough if I had looked into her reputation on greatschools etc, I would have found this out before even applying.

I have a very specialized certification (theatre) so I had a lot less choice - elementary school positions will give you an abundance of choices, so take all of the details about a school into consideration, including the Principal.

If you have any Qs on my experience and such, send me a PM.

Currently I work in a supervised group living setting for people with mental and physical disabilities. I work a third shift position helping out the gentlemen that I work with through the night and in the morning. Its a lot of paperwork, and cleaning at night. During the morning rush I help them get up, get dressed for work, and pass out their medications, while my first shifter usually makes breakfast. I work six nights a week at the moment, as we are understaffed in the home I work for. Making sure that the gentlemen I work with are taken care of is my top responsibility, as well as something that I've grown passionate about. I didn't think this kind of work would suit me initially, but I am glad I decided to give it a try. Soon, I will be taking classes to achieve a license as a certified nursing assistant. I will lose some privelege, as a CNA isn't allowed to handle medicine. That being said it is a stepping stone on my path in life, as I would like to become a registered nurse, and work to help people. I admit I never thought the field of patient medicine would be for me, as I had wanted to be a toxicologist in my youth. Yet here I am happy with my job, and happy to spend sixty hours a week working it.

  • 2 weeks later...

I've only had my first job for about a year now. I work as a stock "boy" at a small local grocery store. Although the rules are bent beyond belief. I do much more than the average stock "boy". I won't get into it, but I should say I do parts of everyone else jobs there.

Hey that's all good - sometimes that'll move you up, plus the skills you acquire can catapult you up at another job in the same field later. Stockers sometimes end up store owners one day.

Here's what I've been up to since original post:

I'm just in a mad dash to find a theatre teaching job in San Antonio by mid August. Meanwhile, I'm applying to practically anywhere, minimum wage jobs even, to just make some extra cash from now until then. Help pay for our move.

A lady at a bagel shop literally rolled her eyes at me when I handed her my resume "uh, you have a master's degree...why do you want to work here?" :-\

ONE MORE inspirational thing:  Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, with a net worth of about 47 billion dollars...used to be a breakfast cook at McDonald's.

I've been working from age 13 ^_^   so as of right now I'm a baker for a collage and on the weekends I bus at a dive in bar known for its burgers if anything.      My dream job would be working in a bookstore or owning a bookstore or working at my local Library if anything due to my love for books and the written word! :pout:
