They can't write out Spikey-Wikey. Not only does he interact with Twilight, but also Starlight, Rarity, and the Crystal Kingdom.

 

I think that they are going to either ask him to be a dragon lord, and him turn it down, or they give him the title of dragon lord, but he can leave if he wants to.

spike can't remain a baby dragon forever - eventually he has to move on.

Given dragon lifespans, he's probably got a good thousand years before that's an issue

Will they write Spike out in Gauntlet of Fire, since it has him becoming the Dragon Lord? Maybe he stays behind to teach the dragons about friendship.

Even if they wanted to do something like that to Spike, why would they do that near the beginning of the season and not save it for the latter half where, excluding premieres, they usually have the big status quo changers?
