Do you believe in hypnosis?

The one time I played a compulsive eating/dieting hypnosis cassette tape I felt a little chilled out and slightly less anxious about eating but I don't think I concentrated enough or did it consistently enough to let it take full effect.

Huh. I haven't been asked this before… sure, I believe in hypnosis, but only in a relaxation/ meditation/ medical means. Whether or not it works, I have yet to find out.

I think some people are more susceptible than others. I am a little susceptible. I listen to some guided hypnosis on youtube and it works to some degree. I will listen to sleep ones for insomnia, I don't instantly fall asleep whilst listening but it helps me fall asleep quicker. Maybe if I went to see an actual hypnotist in person it would work better.

Interesting video:

I think Hypnosis is fake, because all the times, when it gets shown on Tv, it either doesnt work, only works by some or just looks very fake.

So, no. I dont believe in it at all.

I'll never understand why objective fact is put up for for question of whether or not you "believe it"

Hypnosis is not some mystical art, or some super power, it's our own brains susceptibility to the power of suggestion. You want to get someone to do something without them realizing you made them do it?

When someone is looking in your direction, either yawn or scratch yourself on the neck like you are getting an itch. Almost invariably the other person will mimic that action without even realizing they are doing it.

Its essentially the same principle with hypnosis. Getting their mind into a state where they are more susceptible to suggestion is disturbingly easy. In fact, many cult leaders of the past use a specific speech pattern and facial expressions to lull people into such a state and make them more susceptible to what they have to say over time. Chanting and "affirmations" are another way to bring about this compliant feeling in people. You have to be consciously aware of and opposed to what they are doing to not get sucked in, because the more you hear it and the more relaxed you get with what they are saying the easier it is to get you under their whim.

It all goes back to us being pack animals. Its like a beta submitting to an alpha and following that alpha's instructions. Its not mysticism, its just biology and psychology.

I do believe in the practice of hypnosis. In fact, I was part of a therapy that executed it. After many sessions, I did not feel that it was helpful. However, I know that there are individuals out there who find it very beneficial. I could also understand why someone would be skeptical of it.

I know I should reply to other posts above, and I will get to some of them when I am not half asleep, so I will reply to this one.

"I don't think I concentrated enough"

You should not be actively concentrating at all. The idea is to let your mind be clear and let the suggestions "wash over you". Just let it happen. As long as you trust the source (listen to it ahead of time so you know what will be happening) you can let it do the directing for you, instead of the voice in your own head.

i dont see hypnosis as a thing to "believe in"

like it's like asking me if i "believe in" evolution or "believe in" a round earth

of course people doubt it but to me it's just one of those things that i understand to exist due to the overwhelming evidence that i can easily observe from the world around me

I believe in the placebo effect. I believe that if you WANT to believe in hypnosis, and are willing to try it out to test your own belief, you will experience your perceived feeling of being hypnotized.

As an individual that believes themselves to be (an) Octavia, I can safely say that I do.

I also believe that the proper suggestions can go so far as to improve one's life, should they actively be striving for it, thus reinforcing the suggestions. Yes, whilst it may seem dangerous to open the mind, one must always remember that the power of hypnosis lies very much with the individual being hypnotised (though this point never quite seems emphasised enough, leading to such situations as those presented by Mr. Testa). Unwanted suggestions can indeed be rejected, and safeties can be used for those that require additional assurance so that they may be completely relaxed and unworried whilst they trance.

Even so, even if one tells themselves—believes themselves—to be comfortable with the idea of hypnosis, there may be some niggling doubt in the subconscious that will render any attempts useless. Sometimes this can be remedied by something as simple as changing hypnotists, for, even unbeknownst to themselves, the hypnotee may be more comfortable with one hypnotist over another. I have seen many instances, but even past this a threshold of susceptibility must be overcome. Because of this, I cannot say whether or not everyone can be hypnotised. Mayhap it is based on personality. Mayhap there is some inherent block in the mind that will not allow it. I do know, however, that most individuals, even if they do not know it, can.

I once watched a video by a YouTuber named "UltraHypnosis" that's supposed to be an introduction to it. There was no specific effect, just something to get used to doing it (and I think also setting up a trigger word or something). Hypnosis is nothing scary or malicious, it's actually very relaxing, and I highly recommend it. He's got tons of things ranging from simply falling asleep to thinking your gender has changed. I suggest you check him out (though some of the subjects for his videos are slightly NSFW)

I believe in the idea that people who are willing to be hypnotize are more suspectible to it.

In my own imagination, during my time travel trip to the past, Princess Celestia gave me simple instructions to hypnotize her to help her forget sensitive information until the time would come for her to remember and secretly sent me on my quest. She was willing to forget to keep the timeline consist and so her hypnotic state was very easy to do

I've heard about hypno-therapists being able to regress patients and work on their past experiences. But I don't know. It seems like the kind of practice that would require mutual co-operation and much trust in order to work.
But it is possible to enter a trance-like state of mind. And it can be dangerous sometimes. I've heard of people doing some crazy stuff. There was this hindu woman who ended her own life after claiming she was one of the deities from their pantheon. Scary.

It is make-belief, honestly. I used to induced myself into altered states of mind, to deal with some real problems I have. But it was just a coping mechanism. A placebo of sorts.

I believe it exists as a science some specialists have an aptitude for, but it’s far less common than most would believe. Granted, many people now are so malleable that you could convince them to do or think anything without the slightest effort. But hypnotism as a science seems as though it warrants a lot further exploration before it’s truly understood and applicable in a practical way.
