gaming General Paradox Grand Strategy Games Thread

Looks

Recommended Posts

So, initially I wanted to create an Europa Universalis thread to discuss about the game, until I realized that it would be a bit more exciting to talk about all of Paradox's games in general (not to mention there isn't a thread about it yet, as far as I know ((If there is, please let me know below!)).

Are there any Paradox Grand Strategy players here? If so, what's your playstyle? How did you get into the games? What was the craziest, best, or even worst game you've had? What are your favorite, or least desirable aspects of Paradox's games (apart from its DLC, we all know it's pretty horrid). Go ahead, don't be shy about posting how big, or small your blob is :)

Basically, I started out by a friend buying me Europa Universalis 4 once it was on sale last year on Steam. I understood the game rather quickly, and was able to play the Ottoman Empire... sort of successfully! x3

Just recently I got Hearts of Iron 4 (never played HOI 3 or any previous installment). I didn't understand most of it, but I can't wait until I do, it really looks just as fun as EU4 does!

(Still haven't gotten Stellaris, I'll get back to you on that >.<)

And now, for an obligatory blob picture(s)

Have you tried Crusader Kings II yet? Only one I've played.

No, I haven't >.< It looks like a fun game, but I haven't gotten around to buying it

Oh, I play most all of them. I play Hearts of Iron IV, Europa Universalis IV, Victoria II, Crusader Kings II. There is also Stellaris, but that game is not really that much similar to the other mentioned games.

Of the ones I love the most, it would be Vicky II. Such a beautiful game <3 <3

I also quite love playing HoI IV and then I also play a lot of EUIV.

My playstyle? Won't reveal that, I am afraid ;). I would like to keep my own strategies for myself, for when I play multiplayer, I would like to try my best and try to win and have a fun time :)

Also, here is a blob pic of a campaign as Poland (Commonwealth) I did in EUIV :D Moldavia, Greece and Persia are my vassals :) (I have many pics of other successful and fun campaigns, but I don't want to flood :P

I typically play Crusader Kings 2, and I love it to death.  As someone who owns most of the DLC, my only problem is that having Horse Lords really destabilized the gameplay.  I don't mean destabilized as in it crashes every few minutes, but every playthrough ends with the Nomadic hordes absolutely steamrolling the eastern Slavs and settling in their lands while Orthodoxy and Zoroastrianism are eventually overtaken by heresy.

It goes on Steam sale every now and then. I recommend snagging it with all the DLC when it does. Also not sure what you mean on Paradox's DLC being horrible; For CK2, at least, it adds a lot to the game - I can't even imagine playing vanilla now. (Stuff like unit packs/face packs/music packs, too, while they may just be cosmetic, add a lot of flavor to the game and make things feel more diverse) There's even a "Europa Universalis Converter" DLC (which I haven't made use of because I don't have EU4) that lets you transfer your savegame over to EU4. (CK2's end date is around the time of EU4's start date)

CK 2's official end date is 1453 :). EUIV's start date is 1444 :D

I mostly play HOI3 and a bit of Vicy 2.  I have put well over 300 hours into HOI3 at this point and still enjoy playing it!  By far the greatest and grandest WWII strategy game out there.  I have had some really crazy games along the way of course.

One game I played as Nationalist China, beat Communist China and Japan then joined the USSR in an attempt to conquer the world.  I have also had some fun Italy games were I invade the UK and help Germany crush the USSR.  I have had some great France games as well were I held off the Germans and eventually defeated the Axis before the USA joined the war.  One France game I even invaded America!  The absolute craziest game I had was with a mod.  It was late 1941 and I was almost at war but suddenly a message poped up saying "Hiter dead,  Germany Chose Surrender as their action".  France then got automatically liberated and Germany quit the war.

By the way, the Black Ice mod is excellent for HOI3.  It makes the game much more historical and adds an insane amount of units and events.

I have been enjoying a lot of Stellaris recently.  Nothing like leading a race of starfish aliens to conquer the galaxy using their army of sentient robots and fleet of sentient space ships.  Still feels incomplete, but it is a lot of fun.

Also, no mention of City Skylines.  I know its not a proper grand strategy game but Paradox did give us a proper spiritual successor SimCity after EA happened to Maxis.

Honestly, it's fine if you want to add a lot of DLC to a video game, but when you take away certain features to add them in a DLC (Common Sense), it's a really bad move in my book. Games are a masterpiece, they're just so... DLC infested, it's really sad to see it like that.

Black Ice is actually a really broken mod. It really draws the fun out of the game, cause if you are playing nations such as Germany, you literally can't win. I mean, the mod is of course meant for the historical, but yeah, you can't go alternative in that one :)

It all depends on how you want to play.  It is possible to win as Germany but you have to exploit the AI by doing mass encirclement's against Russia.  USA has an insane amount of IC but they are so sucky that a Panzer Corps or 2 can fend them off for the most part.  I agree though, there are some terrible events which railroad the game like crazy especially in 8.4.  I like 7.5 the most since the AI does not get free units on the extent of 8.4.  I just put up with the bad events because things like increased aircraft range, awesome division counters, increased army sizes and all the extra units balance it out.

Oh yeah... Yeah, that's why I'd only recommend buying CK2 with all DLC on Steam sale. Gets unreasonably expensive without, you're right.

Actually, CK2 is about as bad from what I've seen.

(By the way, these are all the "actual" DLC. There's special editions of the game worth $100 that have no actual useful DLC other than skins, extra music and stuff.)

You might've misread my post; I was saying that's why I recommend it "only on Steam sale", because I acknowledge it's expensive otherwise.

Eh, you might be able to buy a couple, maybe a bit more DLC in store. The whole pack's still about $100 when on-sale.

Depends how far on sale it is. They've got 66% off sales sometimes; That'd bring it down to about $80.

  • 7 months later...

What a shame, I'd expect the arrival of horses in ck2, to bring some activity but oh well.

Anyways, I think this might interest some of you, nanomaster Empress Rainbow Dash the Glorious, honored is she, a user from Reddit, conquered the (known) world as a horse, probably killing millions of humans in the process and establishing an equine empire.

I have the links to some of the threads:
