I mean think about it. The 'ponies' walk upright like humans, so maybe they have evolved over time like how humans have evolved. As well as that, the technology has significantly evolved, and they prefer technology over magic. These are a few reasons, so do you think it's fair to think that way?

The character in Equestria Girls are humans.

Them having the same color scheme as their pony counterparts is just a design choice.

I am pretty sure that in universe they have actual human skin tones.

Plus the technology seems to take place during around our time, so I would say that the films don't take place in the future.

Yes.  Yes I do.  I watched a compelling youtube video explaining why the magic mirror is, in fact, a time machine leading to the exact same location, but some, like, hundreds of thousands of years in the future.  It was a really sound theory with a lot of evidence.  I was sold.  I'm a fan.  Headcanon accepted.
