gaming Launch titles.

What happened to launch titles? I remember when developers put effort into launch games.

The SNES launched with classics like Super Mario World and F-Zero, which are still fun today. The Dreamcast launched with amazing games like Soul Calibur and Power Stone. In contrast, the PS4 launched with Knack and Killzone: Shadow Fall, and the Xbox One launched with Ryse and Fighter Within.

I feel like the Wii U would've fared a lot better if it had better launch titles. As for the PS4 and Xbox One, there was enough anticipation that the consoles didn't really need launch titles to garner attention.

Launch Titles in the past, where mostly there to show off what a console can do. F-Zero for example, showed off what the Mode-7 ship on the SNES was all about, like giving it a sense of speed and objects flying at you. Altered Beast for the Sega Mega Drive/Sega Genesis, showed of his almost arcade like graphics, telling people that they don't need to go to arcades and they can experience it at home.

These days, Developers don't have to show anything off, because of the internet. We get bombarded with Trailers for hyped games, or new consoles that there is no sense of wonder, what these games or consoles could actually be about and i also think that from a creative standpoint, Games these days lack alot of imagination.

My opinion though.

They're still used to show off the consoles, but it's mainly for graphics showcases rather than gameplay innovations. Launch titles of the past also showed off graphics but it added to gameplay like F-Zero, which added to the speed. Nowadays it just feels like "LOOK HOW PRETTY OUR GAMES ARE!". Of course, Knack tried to show off how many particles/objects the PS4 can put on screen at once, but the game was so mediocre it was hard to care

There are exceptions like the Fighter Within, but those games were much more detrimental to their consoles rather than beneficial. In Fighter Within's case it more or less killed off the Kinect.

In other words, the Internet ruined everything.

Ruined is such a hard word. The gaming community just became smarter through the internet.

Some other launches didn't fare so great either, like the N64 which I think had a very limited launch lineup as well. I personally think they aren't so bad these days. The current generation had some good games to go on for what it was worth.
