Wont let me log in?

Hi, I don't know if forums has a certain template to post but, I felt I should post this anyways.
I went to log onto the server today and it wouldn't let me. It would log me in then say "downloading terrain" it would stay on that for awhile then finally said "connection lost: timed out". I think it might have something to do with the server considering that I can go onto any other server. At first I thought it was the version of Minecraft I was using (1.8.9) but when I tried 1.10.2 or 1.9 it did the same thing. My friends can get online but I can't, is there an issue with the server or is it just my laptop?

I just logged in using 1.9.4 it seems to work fine for me maybe you have a multiplayer mod that is interfering with the server?

maybe in the launcher make a new profile without mods and see if it works.
