Can EQG stand on its own legs without FiM magic in it?

One thing that bugs me is the borrowed magical mishaps and monsters/magical beings that are supposed to be exclusive to Equestrian, but saturate what is supposed to be a non magical human world.

It bugs me that Sunset thinks that she is responsible for bringing magic to that world when she stole Twilight's crown, when really it was Starswirl. How else would the magic sucking Sirens be there, if not for him? (Sunset seems smart enough to piece together that they were from Equestria and didn't hitch a ride with her...)

While more people in the human world seem content that magic exists there, should Sunny learn the truth that it started with Starswirl?

Should she be tasked with cleaning up his mess and bringing the magic back to Equestria?

Could EqG stand on its own without some kind of magic based occurrence cropping up?

I even made my own thread about the issue, since I think it could totally work especially after

they keep their superpowers at the end of Legends of Everfree

It would likely require the series to resort to sci-fi and science fantasy for its supernatural villains, but other than that there really isn't a reason the series needs to keep its connection to Equestria as a major plot point at all other than the writers being uncreative or Hasbro insisting it on them.

I even challenged myself to come up with a plot that would follow the typical Equestria Girls formula, but feature no magic in it. It can be done, it is a little difficult though.

In my headcanon the Equestrian magic that continues to seep into the human world will eventually begin to break down the barriers between the worlds, much like what happened in the Reflections comic arc. In the end, only Sunset going back to Equestria would fix that...hopefully in time for the 2017 movie so she can be in it.

I think the magical element is one of the least interesting things about these films, so yeah, I think it'd be fine. Without the link to Equestria at all, I think Sunset loses a lot of her depth, but what I really want from these movies is to see more of the main characters' lives. I want to see familiar faces in new contexts, and learn about how the ponies I know live in this world which is so much more similar to our own. Especially given that Legend of Everfree really adds nothing new to the "Equestrian magic" element of the whole thing, pushing it further into a more sanitized version of a semi-generic "kids with superpowers" thing, I really think the series would even be better off focusing on other things.

I think it could, but I think it would be sad if they just cut Equestrian stuff completely. I think it's sad enough as it is that Princess Twilight, the main character of the first two films, seems to be dismissed completely at this point. I was shocked they didn't salvage the coffee shop deleted scene from Friendship Games for Legend of Everfree. I hope they salvage it for the next movie at least. It just seems sad for her to be dismissed and forgotten when she's the one who started it all.

What I do want them to do though is use "Human Magic" which is native to the Human world, instead of implying that all magic comes from Equestria. Something could have happened to the Human magic in the past and now it's awakening again or something. If we wanted more Equestrian magic and mythology wouldn't we just watch FiM? They should start coming up with some new magical lore an mythology for the Human world. Since Equestria is based on Greek mythology, the Human world should focus on another mythology like European Fae myth, with things like the Fae realms, nature and elemental spirits, dream realms, goblins and orcs and elves and trolls, and so forth.

If it wasn't for the magic, we'd just have a teen drama. Yuck.

It doesn't need to remove that aspect entirely, bye at this point I think the characters are solid enough to mitigate the problems of the "teen drama" angle enough. I want to know what the human Rarity and Rainbow Dash's ambitions are, y'know? Would be better than that latest film.

The Sirens didn't really bring magic with them when Starswirl banished them. The opening of Rainbow Rocks states that pretty clearly:

Adagio Dazzle: The energy in this world isn't the same as in Equestria. We can only gain so much power here.

[sonic rainboom]
Adagio Dazzle: [gasp] Did you feel that?! Do you know what that is?

Sonata Dusk and Aria Blaze: I 'unno.

Adagio Dazzle: It's Equestrian magic!
Aria Blaze: But this world doesn't have Equestrian magic.
Adagio Dazzle: It does now.

Sunset is pretty spot on in believing she brought Equestrian magic to Pedestria (hehe, I like that name).

That said, I don't think it could really. A spin off show about characters other than the Mane Six could probably work sans magic, but not the movie series as it stands.

Actually I agree, in that I want to know more about the characters themselves. We still don't know where or how Sunset Shimmer has been living in the Human world, and how she first reacted to the Human world. I mean, what did she do for food and shelter upon arriving?

I liked to think she went full survival, got to grips with her new body and built a shelter and foraged food in the nearby forest and lake or something.
