movies/tv About PG-13 rated movies...

Ever since it was introduced in 1984, the PG-13 rating warned all audiences that films classified as such contain material unsuitable for pre-teenagers and anyone younger. But nowadays, at least since about 20 years later, we're getting a lot more films with this rating, and most kids under 13 are now experiencing problems getting into cinemas with such films.

So the question is: Which PG-13 movies are more appropriate for kids -- ones that are too much for a PG rating, or ones that are not enough to get an R?

I think both are fine for todays audience. Kids these days see and do a lot of stuff you might even expect in a 15 rated film. But also, censorship has gotten to the point were all you have to do is say "Fuck" once and your movie gets slapped with a different number on it. And on a somewhat unrelated note, I found a dvd once (I think it was The house on sorority row?) and it was a 15, but right next to it, was a case with 2 movies in it, some other horror film which was bundeled with The house on sorority row, and it was a 12A, so overall I dont get movie ratings

Apologies if the rating system Im using is unfamiliar, I think UK uses a different one

The latter is more appropiate. Not enough to get an R means that the recepiants will be able to experience more intense material relating to story but not too much of gore and raunchy comdey. America has sent teenagers to defeat the Nazis, they can understand an "F word".

PG-13 these days is pretty much an R rated movie, but w/ any semblance of depth or gravitas cut out. PG-13 exists for one reason and that's to bring in the teenage demographic without upsetting the parents. What was once a middle ground for concise movies with more action and maturity is now just a cash grab. Essentially, PG-13, is the new PG. And the amounts of violence that used to be in PG-13 movies during the 80's and 90's, is now reserved for R rated movies.

As to answer your question, well there isn't really a distinction. Just know that PG-13 movies in this day in age are definitely geared more towards juvenile audiences.

These days, a PG-13 movie to me seems more like a 'Naughty PG' rating. PG-13 films tend to have some slight sexual humor and a bit of harsh language and that's it. The moment violence comes into play is when a PG-13 movie has a difficult time keeping that rating, when originally it was meant for that kind of thing. When a film had enough violent content where parents should be warned but not enough to bring out the R rating. Nowadays it seems most films try to avoid any kind of major violence altogether because it seems to be a difficult fine line to stay on.

Exactly. And even a G rating is pretty much reserved for only animated films, whether it's fitting or not. Many animated films push the limits more and more, and some get into a more PG realm, but they'll get a G rating just because they're cartoons. Many movies from the '60s, like westerns with lots of action, violence and gun play, got a G rating back then but would never get it anymore because they're not designated 'children's movies.' A lot seems to be based on the impression of a movie rather than its actual content. And these impressions change with the times.

Your system is weird, and by extension (by influence) so are European systems. Instead of looking at the rating, look at what it got the rating for, I guess. Mild nudity makes it R but you can have people dying, faces melting off, explosions, etc. and that's PG or PG-13. Do you want another generation who has some ludicrous notion that seeing glutes will scar their children worse than seeing Indiana Jones?
