gaming Saddest video game ending? (Spoilers)

Video games sometimes can play with our feelings just like movies.

So in your opinion, what's the saddest video game ending.

I choose the renegade ending from Mass Effect 3.

This ending in particular left a pit in my stomach.

It's just combination between the soundtrack and that fact everything you've done for the past 3 games flashes before your characters eyes before you're killed by an explosion; it just overloads my emotions.

Halo Reach really did it good for me. Crybaby eleven year old me was heartbroken at watching Noble Team die one by one. Especially when Emile went out like a champ.

And then you got swarmed and could only watch through a visor cam as Noble Six is overrun and stabbed. Manly tears were shed that day.

The bad ending of Witcher 3 hands down. This game just loves to makes you think you're doing the right thing, only to prove you that no good deed goes unpunished. It did so to me several times and I never saw it coming.

Another "favourite" would be Spec Ops: the Line, although it's more about the general experience of late game where the ending is a cherry on top of the cake. A sour cherry on a poisoned cake I may add. It's the only game I know that tells you that by winning the game, you lost as a person.

For me, it was definitely the ending to the first season of Telltale's The Walking Dead. One of the endings to the second season of TWD would be a close second though.

POKEMON MYSTERY DUNGEON: RED RESCUE TEAM

The first, and the best, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon to ever come at gave me tears throughout the entire gameplay. Call me a wuss, but that ending really got me. The kind of thing where everyone's collected and... I'll let you see for yourself. Definitely not your usual Pokemon game.

The saddest ending to one of the best games I've ever played.

Red Dead Redemption. No spoilers here, but sad implications on even the upbeat happy final ending.

Castlevania Mirror of Fate... I know that the likes of Crisis Core, or Red Dead Redemption are more emotional, but I didn't seen Gabriel/Dracula's reaction after finding out Trevor was his son.... nor his words....... I've cried...... alot

I'd go with Life is Strange (granted I've only played though it once, I suspect that there are at least two (maybe even more) different endings, but I went with the 'good' one I guess.

Hiding in that bathroom, knowing that your best friend is about to get killed was tough, made all the more worse knowing that you could easily stop it happening (as you did before). The way they did it really made you feel empathetic towards Max

Ah man, that ending was sad too - but I didn't feel too much sorrow, as I'd just mounted my TV on the wall just before playing the final level, and thought the cracks in the visor was actually cracks on my screen made by me messing up the mount XD. But the tone of that game was done very well throughout!

Half-Life 2.

RIP Eli Vance.

And it's still a cliffhanger after all these years...

Meh.  It was so fast it just felt more like "WTF just happened?" rather then sad.  That coupled with the fact that the series just ended on that scene made it just feel really silly.

I have not really played any sad games but Wolfenstein NWO had kind of a sad ending.  Once again though, kind of rapid and the game ended on a cliffhanger.

Just edited the title for you to warn for spoilers.

My vote for saddest video game endings has to go to Red Dead Redemption. I know it's already been mentioned but it really is heartbreaking

When this person blocks this massive beam produced by a mega robot and gets obliterated, but he also destroys the robot at the same time. The worst thing? You could choose to do almost anything in that game's storyline, and I was the person who blocked the robot's beam.

Valiant Hearts: The Great War. This games ending utterly broke my heart, after all the adventure and insanity the characters endure, Emile's execution at the end of the game made me actually put down the controller and cry. It was something he never deserved, and after surviving some of the worst battles of WWI, he is executed by his own country :(

The bitter sweet endings of Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. It's even more bitter sweet when you actually meet that Link again in Twilight Princess to find him regretting what he missed out on.

To recap on my last post on this thread:

I just recently finished the Mass Effect series for the first time over the weekend, and I got a particularly grim ending that was unlike the regular Renegade Ending that most people know of in the game.

The Vaporization Ending is what I got, which is basically a more destructive version of the Renegade Ending and can only be triggered if you don't have enough war assets (which I unfortunately did not).

This in my opinion is the saddest and most dark ending out of every possible one in the series.

The original ending to Mega Man Rock Force. Justice Man's Robot Masters were simply fighting for freedom, and they were all silenced. The newer version has a happier ending, where the Robot Masters sans Justice Man are all spared and use their abilities for good instead.

  • 4 weeks later...

Don't want to spoil a game that's just been released, but the Battlefield 1 singleplayer has some sad story arc endings, especially 'Through mud and blood', "Avanti Savoia" and 'The Runner'.

I ain't going to say what happens, though. You'll just have to play them and find out.
