What is the general feeling about Sunset in the show proper?

I'm putting this in show discussion, because I want general fandom thoughts.

 

If I posted this in 2013, it would be like I just said, "what do you think of Youtube heroes?" People would want to chop my head off.

 

But I think (hope even), that the fandom has kinda gotten away from our witch hunts off all things non-pony. After Rainbow Rocks, and Friendship Games, A lot of people have been like, maybe, possibly, this is -uh- not such a bad thing, that I'm watching.

 

Seriously, have you heard the OSTs?

 

So the, arguably, main protagonist of the EQG universe is the lovely Sunset Shimmer. She's kinda a big deal. You know Starlight Glimmer? She's like Jeb Bush compared to Sunset.

 

Let me find the point here... Oh yes. So what if Sunset was in an episode of Friendship Is Magic? I'm a compromisin' man, maybe you feel like she could show up as a side character in a season finale, then never be shown again? That's an opinion.

 

Or perhaps, you hate everything EQG so much you even have the filter turned on in EQD, because you don't even want to lay your eyes upon such filth? Or maybe you love EQG with all your heart, and you just want FIM to be replaced with EQG?

 

Or maybe something more moderate and not ridiculous, I don't know. Comment on your thoughts below.

I watch and enjoy the EG films as a guilty pleasure, but I still think they were a terrible idea in principle.  I also feel that the writing is orders of magnitude worse than the show, as if the EG movies were just a slapped together cash grab to sell dolls.  (Gee, I wonder what would give me that idea??)  Some of the songs are spectacular, though, I'll give you that.

 

So, my feeling is that I'm happy to keep Sunset and everything else EG as B-canon, that is to say canon that's not referenced on FIM so I can pretend it doesn't exist.  However, I wouldn't consider it the worst thing in the world if they brought pony Sunset into FIM, IF they did it really well with a great story.  I'm pretty much open to anything if the writing is good enough.  If you have a stellar story to tell and you can make it work, then go for it.  Otherwise, don't.  That's what I say.  If they were going to have Sunset on the show, I would insist doing a proper story arc about her and really develop her.  Don't just toss her in as a quick side thing and then forget about her.  Proper development or don't do it at all!  And I would be hesitant about their ability to give her proper screen time, seeing as how they're already struggling to juggle an arguably bloated cast.  They're doing well enough, but adding Sunset in addition to Starlight would be too much, methinks.

If she got rid of starlight glimmer, I would accept her. but I don't want her for who she IS, just with the promise that it would delete someone ELSE.

Starlight is less post-reformation Sunset and more some weird in-between state between evil Sunset and good Sunset. 

 

Anyway, instead of giving my usual schpiel about how I'd like it but it won't happen, I'll just point out that, had I not watched Equestria Girls, I would have no idea who Sunset Shimmer is. There's plenty of people who have seen the show but not those movies, and I think that's important to consider. They could hypothetically introduce her in the show, but the backstory of Equestria Girls is enough of a trainwreck as is, and considering that, yes, the show already has a fairly large cast, it just might be better if she doesn't make an appearance in the show itself. I don't think it would be easy to incorporate her. 

 

I would like one of those movies to have Sunset return to Equestria, though, because I don't think anyone who watches Equestria Girls is wholly unfamiliar with the show. Then, the show could completely ignore it, therefore bypassing a quagmire of continuity and explanation. Sunset appearing for just a single episode of the show ultimately bypasses any reason why I'd want her in the show to begin with, and those same reasons can be explored outside of the show. I can get more of her if there was an Equestria Girls series or miniseries of some sort, I can see her return to Equestria and tie up some loose ends without her ever appearing in the show proper, and the same is true of her interacting with the mane six we all know and love. I'd like her as an extra main character more than the increasingly hard to like Starlight, but I don't think putting her in the show would work.

Because I am actually invested in Sunset Shimmer's story than her store brand counterpart.

Plus having her reconnect with her former teacher would give Celestia finally something to freaking do after being virtually invisible sense season 5.

I respectfully disagree. I do not think Sunset belongs outside of the EG movies, and she will most likely not be. I don't understand why people want her, she doesn't fit. She has nothing to do with the actual show, and shouldn't.

 

I am fine with her character, but Starlight isn't any worse. Sunset wasn't reformed "better." Starlight has way more opportunity in the show than Sunset, and (don't kill me) is a bit better in my opinion.

 

I like Sunset, but she is overrated in my opinion. It wouldn't make sense to put her in the show, as she has nothing to to with that world anymore. Besides, having a movie character in a show never happens. (And that "Flash Sentry" pony was probably a coincidence or just to mess with us, nothing major).

I like Starlight a lot more than Sunset if Sunset is going to come into the pony world it shouild retcon EQG I really like her back story and I think it was wasted in EQG I think they could have Sunset as an interesting villain instead of Twilight 2.0 but that's not going to happen EQG and FiM are now different things and it should stay that way.

Really though, I do think it'd be nice to see her return, mainly because it'd be a good way to cap off her character, to have her come back and make up with Celestia(and they should totally revisit her "homesick" angle that was dropped in FG for some asinine reason). 

 

Plus I want to see her interact with Starlight. It'd be funny to see people try starting this huge rivalry between them only for the show to make them besties

I  would really like to see Sunset Shimmer return to Equestria, even if it was just as a small cameo in the MLP movie.

Maybe a little episode with her making up with Celestia is nice. But fully integrating her into the story with the other mane cast, is not possible in my opinion. She is already a full fledged out character, who has friends and is good at magic.

 

The only thing you could do with her, is to make her another student of Twilight, with the exception that she dosen't have the flaws that Starlight has. In this case, she would just be there.

I wish Sunset would make an occasional appearance in the show. Especially given Starlight's friendship lessons, with which she might be able to help considering she did the whole 'power-crazy lunatic' thing too. I don't think they could put her in most episodes though, simply because her being there would be too contrived until the moment would come where she actually went back to Equestria permanently.
