FancyHorse 1,208 October 1, 2016 Share October 1, 2016 I've been following about on SpaceX's progress to a proper mission to start a planned trip and possible colony. They make a prediction as early as 2022! Incredible! I do surely hope that humanity will be able to begin proper space travel within our solar system within our lifetimes! And from the progress so far with their re-entry and landing boosters it looks promising. Though the cost at first flight is a bit... yeah. $10 mil is... well it is what it is. But I do understand as to why. The first of its type ever. Civillians heading to a one way colonization plan. And perhaps over the years as their success continues and the colony plans go well perhaps the cost will be reduced even to more affordable levels. What's your opinion on the topic? Like space travel? Excited for Mars? SPACE SHIP!??
Dreambiscuit 8,021 October 2, 2016 Share October 2, 2016 I love space travel and I love Mars! I think anyone moving this necessary project in the right direction is inspiring. Waiting for NASA to get off its duff and do something like this has been a waste of time. For the billions spent at NASA I want to see something more than the effects of tomato seeds in space and experiments that no one cares about. Such pursuits may have their applications in the long run, but for that kind of money I want to see something with some guts! Colonizing Mars is what we need and I'm glad someone is willing to take on the work and risks it takes to make it happen.

It may not be in part with NASA's reluctance but I feel perhaps its the limitations on their budget. Going a little political here, if perhaps the U.S. gov would see the great economic potential in a space colony NASA could easily have their budget increased for space voyage and research development. Though its reassuring they still plan to go by the 2030's. ^^ Or perhaps a collaboration between Space X and NASA? :3 Edited October 2, 2016 by IllusivePony

You have to think about it, NASA is a government agency, they can't just jump into Mars colony things like SpaceX does. These experiments do mean a lot (and unfortunately are rather thankless), and NASA had its fair share of failures before to justify why. A simple failure can cost lives and can delay projects for several months, if not years. They can't afford any risks of losing massive amounts of money, human lives, and infrastructure. I know! If you look closely you'll see that NASA has done plenty of breakthroughs recently, with Scott Kelly and Mikhail Kornienko staying nearly a year on the ISS (the Kelly brothers even did an year long experiment to research the effects of the human body on long-term space travel), Juno is within Jupiter orbit and studying the gas giant, and New Horizons gave us new pictures of Pluto. ESA has the ExoMars mission on going, and in two more years the James Webb Space Telescope, several times larger than the Hubble Space Telescope, is going to start its revolutionary mission.

I should greatly apologize. I never would undermine NASA's accomplishments. NASA is indeed taking great strides in other projects. From recently when Juno was passing Jupiter I was totally invested on watching that occur. Along with New Horizons, Aww Pluto has a heart for us. <3 Lets not forget every pony! NASA is still beast . Heavenly Inexplicit 309 October 2, 2016 Share October 2, 2016 (edited) Well, if we humans want to live on, it is very important that we find a way to get off of this planet! Our resources are limited, and our population is still growing. Even if we do find a solution to those problems without leaving our little blue-green ball, the Sun will not last forever and that IS a problem. It may be a distant problem, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't exist. I think that it's vital for the survival of the human race, and I'm so excited to see that this might be a possibility. Some people say that people born around this time are unfortunate "Born too late to explore the earth, born too early to explore the galaxy." Right now, we're witnessing an epic technological revolution, and some people say that that's boring. I disagree. We likely won't get off Earth for a good few hundred years, unfortunately, at least not when we hit peak population. We'll have to deal with what resources we have right now (and with signs of certain resources running out people are forced to come up with cleaner conserving technology anyway). Thankfully we would already be long gone before the sun expands and burns the Earth into an inhabitable wasteland, which is a few billion years. We got plenty of time to work with.

Better late than never! It's good that they're working towards this goal. You're right. When we start running out of non-renewable resources, people will probably be incentivized to start using renewable resources.
Bojo 1,171 October 2, 2016 Share October 2, 2016 I've been waiting for this all of my life. I've always wanted to watch the moment when humankind got to another planet! Come to think about it; the last time there was this kind of hype was about 50 years ago when humans landed on the moon! What I'm intrigued the most about right now is how is humankind gonna organize itself both in the beginning; how are the leaders gonna be chosen? (Elon Musk for King of Mars!) How can I get my Martian citizenship? Also, looking forward to watch Martian sports :-o BTW for anyone interested, Elon will do an AMA (Q&A) next week on Reddit! So if you have any questions for him, you could try asking it there and he might reply to it! https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/782043081021399040 Also, Martian Twi for the hype:

Mars would most likely remain leaderless and owned by no one for decades to come, and much like Antartica will become a scientific (and commercial) preserve meant to benefit all of humanity. Companies might land on Mars for planetary mining, though I totally doubt it since the voyage there is not worth the cost and it's far cheaper, faster, and efficient to mine on the Moon and asteroids anyways. OMG Low Grav basketball : 3 Hehe oh boy Elon Musk for king X3 and then the events of Red Faction. lol Well, Mars' gravity is not that low, it's 38% of the Earth's gravity. Your ball will go awfully high, though.
MuttonYolk 63 October 6, 2016 Share October 6, 2016 If I'm not mistaken, NASA's getting around 19 billion next year for funding. That's... Appallingly low for an institution of their caliber.
