gaming Any Sonic Fans? How Do You Feel About How The Internet Treats The Series?

Recommended Posts

So, are there any other fans of the Sonic The Hedgehog series using this forum? I've come across a few before, but they are rare and hard to come by, I'm serious, finding other Sonic fans is hard enough but finding someone who's a fan of BOTH? I must be mentally insane and hallucinated it or I have an insane amount of luck. I think It's mainly because the Sonic series in general has been beaten, spat on, kicked to the ground and made an absolute meme and joke of by the community of the internet, to the point where the official Twitter and Facebook just roll with it and go with the everlasting meme flow. This sadly turns off most potential future fans along with the fact that some of the fanbase can be REALLY arrogant and abusive. (Seriously guys, It's been over 10 years of pleading and begging, we clearly aren't getting Sonic Adventure 3, we need to move on.). Because you know what, I think most of the games are pretty fun, It's just the few absolute abominations like Shadow The Hedgehog, Sonic 06 and the Wii U Sonic Boom game that are legitimately worth dragging down, along with any other bad decisions SEGA made with the blue blur in the past I may have neglected to mention, though I'll admit some of the games like Heroes and the side games can be pretty mediocre at best. The original Genesis games are classics, the Adventure duology is adored by much of the fanbase, it seems to be the thought of gems like those games happening ever again that's the only thing keeping the hope for the series up from It's fans. Hey, this is all just my opinion though, so take it with a grain of salt. As for what SEGA needs to do to get their newer games from mediocre to great however, well, I think Jim Sterling said it best. SEGA needs to stop trying to innovate over and over again, come up with a good gameplay system like the boost system did, and keep improving on it over time rather than try to change everything every time.

@@OmegaBeamOfficial,

I'm a brony for life and a Sonic fan but I think your post kind of got lost in fighting a loosing battle in trying to defend the franchise rather than ask and articulate the question of how we feel about it's poor treatment.

To actually answer the prompt, I find it perplexing and mildly frustrating. On Derpibooru whenever Sonic stuff shows up it's downvoted all to Hell even when the artwork itself is no better or worse than an exceptionally upvoted equivalent pony piece.

P.S. I liked Shadow the Hedgehog

Sonic the Hedgehog? Never heard of it. :P

I am perfectly fine with it being the punching bag of the Internet. As long as I have fun, I don't care how others think of it. Besides, I think it is making a positive comeback.

About this.   Is it just fun to play with the exact same concept over and over?  No it is not.  The Call of Duty series, for example, have the exact same gun-shooting experience, yet they try to give some gimmicks like the double jump in Advanced Warfare and the Wall Run in Black Ops III.  They're trying to use gimmicks that attempt to erase the thought that COD is basically the same thing over and over.

SEGA is experimenting with different gameplay styles for the blue blur to appease the audience.  And even then, they're also trying to appease the fans by letting them make fan games.

Why exactly are you hating on Sonic?

I dunno, I think Sonic is great. I loved many of the games, with the first Sonic Adventure being amazing to me when it hit the Dreamcast, and still being a fan of the genesis games.

I liked the old Saturday morning cartoon and thought it was fantastic... never understood why they dropped it. And of course the comics... sure it has done some questionable things, but to this day I still love it and enjoy where they are taking it.

Actually I'm not triggered by them. I can say more. It's quite funny to see posts with unnecessary hate, especially wrote by full of "Love and Tolerance™" bronies.

Of course it also applies to Sonic fans, who hate ponies.

Huge Sonic fan here boys.
As for my opinions on how the internet treats the series entirely - I don't really give a fuck. Why would I? If people like it/don't enjoy it/hate it, why would I care, lol. Though some blind ape saying that the whole series is garbage cause Sonic 06 was trash or there have been some trash sonic games that have come out lately, yes, that's true, but that IN NO WAY means that the entire franchise is bad.

I'm a fan of both MLP and Sonic the Hedgehog and will continue to be a fan no matter what happens. I've been a fan of Sonic since 1992 when I first played Sonic on the Sega Genesis, yet I didn't own my first Sonic game until 1993 when I got Sonic 2 on the Game Gear as a free game alongside the handheld. I won't deny that some of the directions Sega has taken the franchise have been controversial, but I'll continue to stick with it. The same can be said about me being a brony. I'm in the MLP fandom for life.

Ummm....i actually like Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic 06...

Oh well...

I like a lot of Sonic games and i am a Brony to.

Sure, some Sonic games got bad critic but i personally havent played a Sonic game which i hated yet.

Okay, except for Sonic Pinball ( or Spinball or whatever it was called ) because that game was frustrating. XD

How i feel about how the Internet treats Sonic?

The same with how Mlp gets treaten : I try to ignore it and just have my fun with it, without letting myself get down from all the negative things.

I've been a huge Sonic fan for a long time. I've played a huge number of the games, I've seen most of the cartoons and read quite a bit of the comic (though mostly the older stuff unfortunately).

As for how the internet treats the series and its fans, I don't give a flying fuck. It won't affect my enjoyment of the series.

I need to play the newer games still though. I haven't played a Sonic game since Generations. Haven't had a Wii-U so I haven't had the chance to play any of them. I will remedy that eventually though.

Yeah, I'm aware I went on a bit of a tangent, maybe I should have titled the post differently or something.

I don't use Derpibooru so I can't really say anything about that.

P.S You saying you like Shadow The Hedgehog is fine, It's your opinion and I can respect that, I hope I didn't offend you, but I was trying to list games that in general are disliked by the majority of the community.

Sonic the Hedgehog? Never heard of it. :P

Hmmm... Coincidence or not. I actually mentioned Sonic being the internet's punching bag before... Still, It's interesting to see someone seemingly neutral on the subject.

Why exactly are you hating on Sonic?

I don't exactly consider it the same exact concept, more the same core gameplay with tweaks. For example, in Unleashed, no matter what you think of the Werehog stages, good or bad, they were intended to break up any repetitiveness of the daytime levels. Sonic Colors was mostly in 2D and focused more on the Wisps than boost at all. Generations again also had the classic gameplay to break up the boost levels in the modern gameplay, not to mention it has much improved since Unleashed. I think those are a lot more substantial changes than Wall Run's and Double Jumps. It's also kind of funny you mention that, since Sonic Lost World also had wall running and double jumping, and I thought it was a good game, don't get me wrong, but all this trying to experiment constantly rather than keep a formula or two and stick to it. That's why we have so many divided groups in the fanbase, some want games like Heroes, some want games like Adventure, and some want games like the classics. Though I do appreciate what they're doing with Mania and Project 2017, trying to appeal to a few different groups, but not all at once because that wouldn't work.

I dunno, I think Sonic is great. I loved many of the games, with the first Sonic Adventure being amazing to me when it hit the Dreamcast, and still being a fan of the genesis games.

Sonic Adventure one is probably my favourite Sonic game of all time, though It's tight between that one and SA2, so I think I can understand you there.

I never watched the old Sonic SatAM cartoon, I actually wasn't around in that time period, so I can't really say anything about it. I hear It's good though.

I like their chilli dogs and milk shakes. I usually order an unsweet tea too.

Chilli Dogs! Milkshakes! The essence of Sonic attitude!

Actually I'm not triggered by them. I can say more. It's quite funny to see posts with unnecessary hate, especially wrote by full of "Love and Tolerance™" bronies.

It doesn't trigger me, don't get me wrong, I just find it a little sad I guess, that Sonic went from this renowned mascot and rival to Mario in the 90's to being someone everyone makes a joke of nowadays.

Dude, you're seeing what you want to see. I can confidently say that I never have and likely never will "hate" on Sonic.

@@GeekySonic

Huh?  "What I want to see?"

Sorry, no seeing of any sort.

Well then, you misinterpreted me. I do not hate Sonic the Hedgehog. In fact, I have loved it since I could speak. So much so that Sonic is literally in my username.

Pretty sure this was a big misunderstanding, that's all.

Huge Sonic fan here boys.

It's fine for them to hate it too, I don't really care, It's just the level of hatred and spite I've seen towards the little guy is astounding, and not in the good way. I also hate it when people play one game, and then use that game to say the whole series is bad. Sure, you have every right to not like the game, but you can't just piss on an entire franchise when you've only played one game from it.

The classics were really good games, no doubt about it, I'll always prefer the adventure games though, guess I'm just more of a fan of 3D games. But without those Genesis games, no-one would know who he is.

Ummm....i actually like Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic 06...

The same with how Mlp gets treaten : I try to ignore it and just have my fun with it, without letting myself get down from all the negative things.

Again, as I've said to others, It's fine if you like the games, I'm just stating games that the majority of people didn't like.

Yeah, spinball could have been good, It's not terrible I think, just poorly executed sadly, though maybe that's because I'm just bad at pinball.

Love and tolerate I guess.

I've been a huge Sonic fan for a long time. I've played a huge number of the games, I've seen most of the cartoons and read quite a bit of the comic (though mostly the older stuff unfortunately).

I've only seen Boom, X and Underground, and those cartoons were pretty good (Only the Japanese version of X though I think)

Well, if you're looking for the newer games to play, Lost World recently got ported to PC if you have one of those. I'd recommend it, It's not the best Sonic game by far, but It's pretty entertaining.

I'm not much of a Sonic fan, but I can agree that the hate the Internet throws at the franchise -and the fans- is really disgusting.

Then again, I suppose the internet can be a disgusting place... Wow, I got really dark there for a second.

I have played a few Sonic games, and I enjoyed them for the most part.

I especially enjoyed Colors.

That game was great and had some pretty awesome music.

But I wouldn't go as far to say that I am a full fledged fan of the series, as I have only played a few of the games.

But from reading up on video games in general, it appears that Sega hasn't really been kind to the franchise for quite a while.

I am interested in seeing how project 2017 turns out.

To be honest, I don't know much about the way Sonic is being treated on the interent, other than what I hear from this forum. I'm more of a casual Sonic fan who has played SA2B to death, and I loved the short movie of the first appearance of Metal Sonic. Sonic Heros was okay, and Sonic and the Secret Rings was a little fun. I remember when I first played the demo of the first SA. It was one of the times I was most deeply impressed and awed by a video game.

I used to be a Sonic fan, but ever since I got into Xenoblade Chronicles, I lost every last bit of admiration I had for the hedgehog, so I don't blame people for hating him anymore.

So getting into a new game means you have to suddenly hate what you used to like, or lose any admiration or enjoyment it ever gave to you?

That makes absolutely no sense at all.

There are several games I love more than any Sonic game, but that in no way diminishes how i feel about the Sonic games I used to and still do love.

Edit: I put a bunch of nonsense in there that made no sense. How did I miss that?

I'm both a huge fan of Sonic and MLP:FiM. They are my two favorite universes ever!  :kindness:

As for the hate against Sonic... I don't know, I saw some sure, but still less than for MLP.

The Sonic franchise deceived (again) a lot of people with the Boom game on Wii U (cartoon and 3DS versions are good however), and it's not surprising if some people have the tendency to consider Sonic as really bad or even dead after all these years. (especially if they didn't play the series a lot)

Regardless, the job Aaron Webber and others are doing for Sonic is actually really great! They're combining all the old memes and critics about the series to make good parodies on the official Sonic accounts. It shows that, even with pretty bad periods, the Sonic community is able to laugh it off and still hope for and build a better future for Sonic.

It's sort of a Pinkie Pie attitude I would say.  :)

If you have cooked baked bads, don't worry, laugh it off with your friends and retry again!

There are so much positivity in this community, like in MLP:FiM's : fangames, good people and future games which will continue the series. There will be bad and good games, objectively, but it's like everything. There will be always good stuffs to discover and retain.

We're fans, so we won't be completely negative about our series if we still like it, no matter what others say.

Colors is one of the few I haven't played since I don't own a Wii, so my only judgement of it is from YouTube footage, and it looks pretty good to me, I like the idea of the wisps. Still, I suppose I can agree, Sega hasn't been exactly kind, after the Wii U Sonic Boom game happened (The 3DS one was OK in my eyes), but still, at least with Sonic being their golden goose he gets attention from them. Most of the other franchises SEGA make get left in the dust, forgotten by them and never touched again. I mean, how many people reading this are gonna know what Jet Set Radio or Space Channel 5 are?

A couple of bad games won't ruin the franchise for me. I like Sonic because of the memories I have with him and the fun I had playing those older games. A lot of people just want to focus on the bad parts of it like it is all that matters, when actually it is pretty easy to just laugh them off and move on. Sonic 06 for example, is regarded not just as a horrible Sonic game, but as one of the worst games ever made period. And you know what, that is OK, because there are still some amazing games and I imagine at some point Sega will get him back where they need to, and if not the old games are timeless and will still be there to relive by anyone who is a true fan and wants to revisit them.
