spoiler Continuing a FIMfic in progress when an episode alters the canon of the show

Having watched the Season 6 finale yesterday. And I saw that the plotline of the story was very similar to a Fimfic that I was in the progress of writing.

It was about the main characters getting kidnapped by evil forces and it's up to side characters to save the day.

I had posted the first chapter of the fic on Fanfiction and Fimfiction about a month or so ago, before the season finale aired. It's a 4 chapter fic called "Harmony's New Heroes"

The episode also featured the Changelings and now with everything that has happened in the episode I don't know whether or not my fic will continue to follow the canon of the story. And I feel rather disheartened by this turn of events.

My fic has several different elements that might be different from the episode, but the show may have beaten me to the overall concept of side characters saving the day. I don't really know what to do.

What do you think I should do?

Should I continue with my story or should I discontinue it?

Continue, I say. I've had many ideas I thought were good and later discovered to my disappointment others had already used the idea in some way.

At the very least writing it will get it out of your head and you won't have it bugging you anymore.

Hello, @@BrawnyCharger

Because the section Life Advice is more intended for users to seek guidance regarding more personal aspects in their lives, I have gone ahead and moved your thread to AK Yearling's Wriiting Resources where it can obtain the appropriate attention.

You should continue writing it. Just because a story idea becomes Jossed by Canon doesn't mean it's suddenly inappropriate to write about it!

Besides I like What Could Have Been moments that still come into existence in some way like fan fiction.

I agree with what the others above me have said; you should continue it! Especially if you were really fond of the idea. If anything, I'd say just be upfront about the fact that you started writing the story before the canon-altering episode(s) aired. I'm pretty sure the readers would understand; especially considering the fact that FiM is, in fact, still an ongoing story. It's probably happened to more fanfic writers than you think. Which, honestly, is one of the biggest perils of writing fanfic for a show that's ongoing... :P

^ But hey, some people do like reading alternative takes on scenarios that otherwise wouldn't happen in canon! :D (And yes, I am one of those people)
