Hee! I would say that I'm surprised, but most genes and the proteins they encode are named pretty cryptically like that: with some three-letter descriptor followed by a number identifying how many proteins are in that class (in this case, the paraoxonase family, protein or gene 3). I worked with dozens of these guys about a year ago doing some epigenetic research, so I know way more of these than I really should. Especially if the scientists who discover them don't care to give them a nice name (case in point, the JAK kinase family, originally coined JAK to stand for "just another kinase"). 

 

But if those scientists do want to coin a name for proteins, you get gems like pikachurin, aerodactylus, sonic hedgehog, and robotnikin. (And no, I did not make any of those up.)
