the movie was pretty good all things considered.  Spoiler Alert It got a good amount of flack because one of the main characters of the autobots dies.  I highly recommend it if you wanna kill sometime.

As much as I loved the original series, I honestly can't sit through most of them without getting a headache anymore. They are so cheesy and goofy that it is impossible for me to keep a straight face while watching it. Season 1 was pretty solid, while season 2 had so many attempts to kill the fandom you cannot even count them all.... and S3? It was a complete change to the series with some of the best ideas to come out of the show that we still point at today... but holy crap is the animation and writing a mess in some of them. Most of the time I honestly prefer to just remember it for what it was than rewatch them to see how awful it is now. I do love some of the history and ideas that sprang from the show, especially the third season.

I am like that with most 80's cartoons... they just did not age well at all for me.

The first miniseries and first couple seasons are best, as is the movie. After the movie the animation quality of the series went way downhill.

Yeah I heard the movie was supposed to be good. Okay I'll check it out.

@@TheImmortalLegendG,

It's an OK series. Seasons 1 and 2 are pretty OK, and are really fun ^^ The movie is also pretty awesome. Season 3 is a terrible mess, mostly do to Hasbro intervention.

IF you are interested, I highly suggest Transformers:Prime. Probably my favorite Transformers series.

Yeah I heard that Prime was supposed to be good. Okay I'll check it out.

Yeah that's why I asked. Most 80's cartoons seem so stupid and unbearable. But I knew a lot of people loved the original show. So I thought I could give it a try.

Just keep an open mind and try not to judge the whole franchise by that show. I know a couple of people who hate Transformers, just because they decided to start there, and found the show so horrible and goofy that they think the whole franchise is that way. You have to really watch the show with a completely different mindset than you do with most of the shows we have today, and not try and compare it to the standards we have today for animation and writing.

Alright I'll tart with the newer versions then.

Well you can start wherever really... each series is self contained so you don't have to watch any one series to be up to date on another. I think either Beast Wars or Transformers Prime are great series to start with... and even the original cartoon is a good starting point, IF you are able to shake your head and remember, this was the 80's and a lot of things just went that way. If you can have a good laugh and not judge it by what we see today, it can be a fun silly slice of Transformers history.

I mean G.i.Joe is a military counter-terrorist group, and yet they had a dance off with Cobra in the 80's to decide who would win a fight... so I think Transformers can be forgiven for some of the cheesy antics that the 80's was known for. I still love the cartoon for what it did for me, but some of the shenanigans that are pulled off are just almost painful to watch.. kinda like an old black and white horror film from the 50's or something.

Prime is really good, yeah, you should also consider Animated and Beast Wars too(Beast Wars is often considered the best while Animated was my personal favorite)

It's worth checking out Robots in Disguise 2015 too, you might get some enjoyment out of it

Beast Wars was my favorite Transformers series, and not just because of how slimey Megatron is. The story is a little... ok, there are plot holes you could drive the moon through (keeping it spoiler free, though). To be honest, if you don't mind a show robots with animal forms and a lot of really campy humor sometimes, it's fun. The Predacons and the Maximals were my introduction to Transformers. Blackarachnia and Megatron are my two favorites, though.

I am going to say no. I actually watched a bit of it, it doesn't have much depth to the plot

Most 80's cartoons did not. That was my point to the OP... Hasbro (and most companies of the like) was more interested in selling you a toy than telling a story, and it shows in a lot of it.

Beast Wars started off very slow to me, and at first I did not care for it.... but after the first several episodes it really grew on me and the writing for S2 and beyond was really good. I know some people dislike it because of the whole animal thing, but I think they did a hell of a job presenting the characters and the universe in a really interesting way. I even liked Beast Machines despite what they did in it to infuriate TF fans everywhere. (And people thought killing Prime in the movie was bad that was nothing compared to the backlash of Beast Machines)

Beast Wars Megatron is easily one of my favorite characters of all time.

If you make a beautiful story, the toy will sell well! I guess you do say it gets better with beast wars though. i was mad because someone told me transformers was good so i bought the first one to see, and it... wasn't

If you haven't seen the original Transformers movie, you're missing out. Easily one of the higher examples of good 80s animation.

And the way that movie starts with those sick riffs, and whenever 'The Touch' plays. It's magical.

The movie would be a wise choice. It gives you a general grasp on what the series was like at that time, and is easier to digest than the series. It'd be easy to go from that to the series if you happen to (hopefully)  like it.

Generation One of Transformers has stood the test of time and is still beloved by many around the world, but compared to the more recent iterations, it doesn't hold as well mainly because they had to conform to certain standards such as violence. I do strongly recommend watching seasons one and two as those are considered the best that the show had to offer. Transformers: The Movie, is still pretty good though the violence is quite intense for what it is considering many characters are killed in the first ten minutes. Plus, you do get to hear the likes of the late Leonard Nimoy and Orson Welles as Galvatron and Unicron respectively.

Season three... This is where things go downhill in terms of animation, the more futuristic setting, and trying to present the new cast as being better than the old one was. It's generally a mixed bag with some great episodes scattered amongst some really bad ones, and what they did for the season three finale was a result of pressure from parents. Finally, season four wraps everything up in a really odd way, but that's what happens when you only have three episodes to work with.
