is Spike the most powerful character?

Let's take a look at Spike for a moment, and compare him to some other relatively powerful characters in the show. Spike is a dragon. As a dragon, he eats gems. And plenty of them. No doubt, as a “baby” dragon, he's going to have a voracious appetite- as he's still growing, and will continue to have an even bigger appetite for gems as he hits dragon puberty. Now, look at some of the powerful items in Equestria- the Bloodsone scepter, the Alicorn Amulet, the Crystal Heart, the Elements of Harmony, even the EQG Siren's chest gems...all of these have one thing in common- they're all made with gems that act as a catalyst, or container for the power that can be used by them. If gemstones are nothing more than power banks (as seen in EQG, h\when the energy the Dazzlings were collecting was lost, when their gems were broken), and Spike is consuming that power within all the gems that he eats, then it's likely that he's the most powerful character in all of Equestria (perhaps even moreso than Twilight, who needs 5 of her friends to truly utilize the strongest (Friendship magic) known to Equestria), and a VERY useful tool for the ponies.

interesting thought indeed.

but how would he wield those powers?

he's not a unicorn who can utilize magical powers.

who knows? He's a fire breathing dragon, so maybe he'll get advanced lightning powers (since lightning is a purer form of fire), or plasma powers?Maybe he can start learning to wield swords made from his scales, and the power channeled through them (almost like a unicorn horn, but weaponized)

One would assume, given the description of them being 'power banks' that to a dragon, they'd just be nurishment, not a focus through which to perform magic.

Which begs another question, can Dragons cast magic themselves? or are they only able through wands and the like (such as the Bloodstone Scepter)

Pretty sure that question is off topic, but to get back, I would assume the magic itself would be lost to the ether and he'd just be fed by the physical gems themselves.

Though it would be VERY interesting if they actually made a spike episode out of this topic.

but he's already able to pull off magic- that being use of his fire breath to teleport letters to Sunbutt. who knows what else he's really capable of, if he tried

Fair point, but how do we know that's powered by the gems, or just an innate ability?

Who's to say eating something powerfully magical would effect that at all?

Granted, we don't see other dragons doing anything like that, but none of them were raised around ponies and their magic.

fire breating and letter sending seems to be his only magical abilites.
and as far as i've seen, these jewels enhances already existing abillities, and will most likely loose their powers if they're destroyed (eaten).
i wouldn't want a even more powerful spike to grow, as we have seen that leads to no good.

and i forgot, Twily and her friends have the magic of friendship within themselves.
they gave up the elements, because they are the elements.

we've only seen Spike grow as a result of greed, not magic

and Friendship magic that the mane 6 have can't be used by onesself

Yeah I agree tah the gem don't really contain the Harmony magic but are more like Conduits that draw the magic to them. If the gems wehre eatend well they be done for good.  I mean, yes there was Nightmare moon attempt to shatter the elements. The fragment reacted to the magic.  So yeah Spike not really that powerful he justa dragon that can swim in lava.

According to Lauren, Celestia was the one who raised him and trained him to be Twilight's assistant. Probably she's the one who helped give him the messaging ability. I mean when you look at it, all his letters go straight to her, even when he doesn't mean to like if he used his breath when he had hiccups. And she can send letters straight to him. So it seems more likely to me that Celestia just made a direct link between her and Spike.

So I don't believe there's anything to support the idea that if Spike ate a magic gem he would gain that gem's power. Dragons just seem to be innately strong, durable creatures. Even then, he probably wouldn't be immune to the magic of someone like Discord.

Well the same can argument can be said for all dragons, but they arent particularly powerful aside from physical strength. He does eat a lot of gems, but that doesnt mean those gems contain any power. Maybe gems only amplify power that is sent through them in specific ways, or only store power that must be first placed in them. On that note, Spike is a dragon, and he can breathe fire, crush gems with his hands and jaw, and survive comfortably in lava all as a baby. Which is pretty cool.

In my opinion I'm going to have to say no because the most powerful character in the show is Gummy I mean just look at that face he even makes Spike say I'm not messing with that. 2TYeXLK.png

Gummy is merely secretively philosophical (as seen in Slice of Life). Doesn't give evidence of him being magically inclined

There really should be I know he's just a pet, but who knows what his true power is his power level could be over 9,000  and I agree Gummy does rule.

Gummy is quite smart and he seems to appear out of nowhere at times in episodes and being Pinkie Pie's pet he could probably break the fabric of time and space with Pinkie Pie, but every character has their own ups and downs, but when it comes to Spike I feel he is to dependent on Twilight for everything and when he was shown as a full grown dragon he just kidnapped Rarity yes he was strong, but his main focus was Rarity so in my opinion his crush on Rarity and his constant need for Twilight is his major downfall aside from those  he seems to cause problems more then help like when his job was to keep things quite for Twilight he made more problems arise in which being a show for kids everything was fixed in the end, but his causing problems goes onto other episodes, but he is a baby dragon so therefore does not fully understand what his actions may cause besides that he had a really tough time fitting in with his own kind he did give up being dragon lord which further shows he could never become a leader and his assistance is minimal he can't really do anything on his own so he always requires help from others and yes I know he is known as a hero to the crystal ponies, but he did not really bring the heart back he was actually falling to his death and was luckily caught by Cadence who managed to bring the heart back to its proper place but that is just my opinion.

I think if Spike ate any of the stuff he would just get a severe case of indigestion. Or worse.

I don't think he would necessarily gain any magical skills or abilities. It is true they could be magic banks of a sort, but that does not mean just having them on (or in) your body would give you access to their power.

Spike has potential power as seen from "Dragon Quest", "Power Ponies", "Equestria Games", "Goblet of Fire" and "The Times They Are A Changeling". It's not obviously on the level of said magical but he has some abilities to use what all he's got in dire situations. This is how he's able to utilized his problems into solutions and in this, he's potent. It's less of a physical type of attribute but his internal aspirations are amongst the highest.
