was season 6's finale setup too soon?

Looking back, one of the reasons that I felt it was so cringeworthy- aside from the presence of Starlight herself, was the moral that the writers were trying to push. Trying to adjust Starlight into being comfortable with being a leader felt....ill-timed. She hasn't really been taking her friendships with the mane 6 seriously, hasn't had sufficient screen presence- at best, it has been sporadic (not that I'm complaining, as I don't really like her), and to try to go the route of her having to be a leader....just doesn't settle with me well. It feels like it's too fast; as if the writers are eager to set SG up as future security for Equestria, if anything ever happens to Twi and the gang, and I don't like that fast pacing, given the aforementioned reasons. How do you guys feel about this push to leadership with SG, given the course of her “reformation” and available screen time?

If you are a Starlight hater most likely you're going to find anything with her "cringe-worthy" or just be unsatisfied with anything involving her.

The lesson was more than her just being a good leader or being afraid of being a leader. It had to deal with her afraid of failing at being a friend and leading her friends. Her fear of failure in general because she failed really hard in the past. She took her friendships seriously she just didn't know how to be a friend. She let things her anxiety get the better of her. She always used magic to solve her problems in the past so using it to solve something that doesn't need magic to begin with makes sense in her mind.

That was what episodes like "every little thing she does" was for. She learned her lesson in the end.

I will say that the season honestly needed like 1 or 2 more Starlight Glimmer episodes to make the season finale much more significant to the show and meaningful to the characters. Like one episode with her and the other three in the finale to give that extra push when it ends up being just them to save the day imo.

I would say that the writers/show makers probably didn't give her lots of screen presence because they still wanted the mane 6 to be prevalent. And obviously they needed to include CMC and Discord episodes too. So they shortened Starlight's role lessening her importance.

Starlight Glimmer failed as a leader before and her fear to fail again, and cause the destruction of eQUESTRIA again, is still very real and haunts her. I would say this was more so about her getting over that fear of failing and the speech at the end was awesome! I loved it. Really shows her growth (because the rest of the season decided not to show much besides like 2 episodes).

Since I like Starlight Glimmer, I thought that the season 6 story arc of her becoming a leader, stopping Chrysalis and helping someone else become a leader themselves was a well-done and welcome story arc for season 6 and continued well from season 5 and what it's finale set out to do. Her talking about the values of leadership to Chrysalis directly reflects what the main 6 told her in both the opener and finale of season 5 and was a welcome example to see just how far she has come.

That being said, if you dislike or even just don't care about Starlight Glimmer, than it's unlikely that this episode ( or story-arc in general ) will do much for you.

How Season 6 ended: that was NO WAY to end a series as a whole! Which is why a Season 7 is mandatory.

But the bad news is: Starlight's old writers are all gone now, so it's up to some of the new writers to give us some Starlight episodes.

That finale was one of my favourite Starlight episodes, but I could have used a bit more build up before we got to that point, and especially a bit more time spent watching Starlight get over her issues. I mean... aside from parts of "Every Little Thing She Does," her arc flows naturally, but I don't think anyone would have minded more buildup for her growing understanding of friendship. With that said, I do think her very recent misdeeds help explain why Starlight is so afraid of leadership, even if I don't really understand when or how she actually learned from her mistakes. I rather enjoy that episode, so I can't complain too much.

The finale itself was actually fine. It showed Starlight in a far better way than any of the episodes in season 6 could have done, probably because the finale didn't have her using her overpowered magical abilities. What I had a problem with was there were not enough episodes in season 6 to give her more development. The finale to me was fine, but it was a sorta huge leap from where she was. She needed at least two more episodes of proper development I think, but in the end it is what it is.
