Do you feel that schools are too lenient on student-athletes? I've heard of teachers passing them just so they could play football. What are your experiences?

Where I went to college, our athletes got free meals (since they were at practice when the dining halls were open), free hotel stays the night before games (even home games), basically all kinds of special treatment.

 

The silly part? The athletic department at the school loses $10 million a year. They have almost zero income. It's not like a big football school where they make millions from every game. And they STILL get all of this extra stuff other students don't have. It's very frustrating.

It honestly depends on each individual school's policies and treatment of student-athletes. You'd have to make a judgment on a case-by-case basis, as each institution is different.

 

When I was in high school, there was one year when the rules were bent for the baseball team. Ordinarily, athletes could continue to play sports so long as they had passing grades in all of their classes. The baseball team was so small that season that we couldn't afford to lose anyone. Several players' grades fell just below passing after a major exam, but their averages were bumped up to "passing" so that the team could compete in the championship. My school's administration changed the following year and all student-athletes were treated the same way as everyone else. If you passed on your own merit, you could continue to play. No exceptions.

I think they do that in some Colleges....mostly because of some rule about S.As having to reach a minimum grade per semester. Back in Highschool I didn't see any of that sort of treatment....though that's also possibly because of my school's terrible Sports standards....we were mostly geared towards academics...and Basketball peeps like me weren't really paid much attention...
