Comic News: New Series coming; Friends Forever ending

A bit of good news; bad new here. From Equestria Daily: http://www.equestriadaily.com/2017/01/new-comic-series-legends-of-magic.html

1. A new series titled "Legends of Magic" is coming; which looks to hopefully fill in some blanks in regards to the history of Equestria.

2. To make room for it Friends Forever is ending at issue #39 (Celesta/Luna).

I'm excited about the new series, but it hurts to see a solid slice of life series end like this. We'll see what happens.

Thoughts?

it hurts to think that all this lore and wordbuilding WON'T be in the show, as it should. I hate that

but it's still pony, so I'll give it a chance. Can't deny the lore I've been dying to see from FiM....even if it is on comic book form

It's actually ending at  38.

I am sad because I love Friends Forever! Way better than FIM imo, but FIM is pretty awesome

I am excited for this new series tho! So many awesome things are going to be talked about! Hopefully about the before Equestria civilizations, Equestria's founding, perspectives of different ponies, etc.

Hopefully they link to the books as well but I doubt that will happen. The books have alot of lore that would be interesting to see put in a timeline during all of this, especially Daring Do books.

Friends Forever was actually pretty decent to great, especially considering that the Main series has been in a really bad slump since TGTBTP, so to see it go is a real heartbreaker(especially since we never got one with Lightning Dust)

Not sure how I feel about Legends of Magic, it's cool I guess, but I prefer my slice of life stuff

I am not a fan of the comics, because i don't really read comics in general. But i am a bit baffled by the reaction of the fandom, because it pretty much confirms what should've been clear years ago.

The show itself was never intended to have a very deep storyline with lore and worldbuilding and what not. It's a slice of life show first and foremost, with a casual audience in mind and stories everybody can relate to. The comics where always intended for the hardcore audience, who want to delve deeper into the lore, which is okay because the comics have multiple arcs and they have more time to flesh these lores out more. There is only so much you can do with a 22 minute episode.

If you want to build the entire lore in MLP into the show, you probably need to make an entire season, that only consist of flashbacks and i would find that very boring.

Just my opinion.

they could've had a spinoff series that was a prequel to FiM, and delve deeper into lore and whatnot. "Equestria Origins" or something

That would've taken up too much money and more pressure on the animators and writers. DHX probably didn't want to risk the money to make another series, besides FiM and Equestria Girls.

Besides, Hasbro first question would've been "can we sell toys with that?" :P

It sucks that FF is ending (where's my Big Mac/Shining Armor comic dammit!?) but THIS is what they replace it with? I doubt the target audience (the kids not us) cares about the history behind all this, they just want a fun cool show and stories.

It's not like the main series is going to tap into the full potential of the world of Equestria, which is a shame, because there are still several interesting locations that haven't been touched upon, when the show would rather stay with the same few locations over and over again.

I am not even asking for major story arcs that last the whole season, but using the cutie map to visit some new locations and meeting some new species/getting a few more episodes like Griffonstone would have been nice.

Especially seeing as the season's toyline was Explore Equestria, that and the cutie map as a plot device should have made it easy for the writers to bring some form of more worldbuilding to the series, but instead we got episodes like Applejack's Day Off.

So I guess I might be interested in checking this new comic series out.

What's really ironic is that the final issue of Friends Forever features Celestia and Luna in a team-up, and its predecessor, the Micro Series, also ended with a Celestia and Luna issue even though Luna was the main focus.

Kind of sad, since FF was a great series (although some of the art was a dud for me in a couple of them). I am going to miss not seeing some of the characters get an issue here and there that missed the boat (Lyra, Vinyl, Derpy, Whooves... the list goes on and on). I like the main series well enough, but was always hoping to see some of the lesser used characters get some glory in it here and there.

That being said, i am excited to see what they have planned for this new series.

i'm cautiously optimistic.
i've long said that the best area for the comics to play in is the past.

because they can't develop ponies in the modern time, because that would step on the shoes of the TV show.  so they have basically two options:
1) do a modern story that has no lasting changes

2) do a past story, and the whole world is open to them

To have an entire series devoted to the best option that they have sounds fantastic.

I doubt the target audience (the kids not us) cares about the history behind all this, they just want a fun cool show and stories.

Firstly, I think you are separating history and relational story lines inappropriately.

MLP is all about the friendships between ponies.  it doesn't stop being about that just because it is set in the past and telling some lore.

Secondly, MLP is great because it respects kids as little people that can handle complexity in a storyline.  I feel your comment doesn't do that though.

I actually really like the sound of this new series and it certainly has a lot of potential. I'm a little sad that Friends Forever is ending though as I really like it. Here's hoping the mane comic will start featuring the occasional pair-up slice of life story. In the event that the new series is set to run for a finite amount of time I'm remaining optimistic that FF can return at a later time. In the meantime we can have a neat series that explores the history of Equestria, and it's totally understandable that the comic staff don't want to run three series at the same time.

I really lost investment in MLP in terms of telling a decent stoty. If you're going to your world building via comic, you know you messed up. Even then the comics on par with FiMFiction in terms of  canon, so the world building already bunched.  Im sorry, but not excited for this series. If you need I'll be reading the following series that haven't been messed up yet

  • Superman:Rebirth
  • Invader Zim
  • Titans 12th Doctor
  • Avatar:The Last Airbender<---Proper world building

Not necessarily, the show might focus on Starswirl and the founders for example, and the comics might go more wacko like the middle period after Nightmare Moon's banishment or during Granny Smith's youth
