roleplay world Pasting from a text editor

Recommended Posts

I like to write in wordpad and paste into the text box if I am typing something long (Not MS word, too many annoying blue lines for creative wording and vocabulary and such), but for some reason, it gets pasted without any formatting(italics and such).

Also, if I put spaces in between paragraphs after I paste it in this way, it gloms them together again! This confuses me, since text posted on here seems to work fine (see the space between these paragraphs). If I click 'edit', and respace them again, then it works, but it's somewhat annoying. I don't know if this can be fixed boardside, or what the best solution is. What text editors do you ponies use?

I think the reason for that is because in order to format text the forum uses BB code where as most if not all text editors don't. For example on the forum, If I had something that looks like this or like this...

what is actually getting written is this:

[b]If I had something that looks like this [/b][i]or like this...[/i]

Since text editors don't use this system I don't think that there is any automatic way to get formatting in text editors to directly transfer over. There may be a way to do it but not that I know about sorry.

You could have "post as plain formatting by default" on in your options panel in the text editor here for posts on the forum, that's my guess... It's the little red wrench with the gear in the background in the text editor. :P

As for actual text editor usage, I tend to just use the quick reply box here on the forum, I don't often find need for additional formatting, when I do, the option to do so is right there for me anyway, and there's an automatic auto-save feature for the web-based editor that saves over a draft every like 1 - 5 minutes or so (I don't use this site much at the moment as I've not much time to do so usually given life circumstances at the moment, don't quote me on the save interval, I mean, unless you want to.)

Yesssss, I am going to quote you. I will come for you in the night if my post doesn't get saved exactly every 1-5 minutes!

Thanks for telling me, I didn't know about this feature!

Hello trademark,

As said above, I'm pretty sure it is related to text-formatting language.
The text editor on forums use BBCode, where wordpad its own way of formatting text.

for example, to get a bold font on forums, you need to put this BBCode:

[b]text in here will be bold[/b]

sig-4804546.sig-4748135.sig-4748135.sig- NOTE   You can do this manually or by pressing buttons in the editor.
sig-4804546.sig-4748135.sig-4748135.sig- NOTE2   You can view 'raw' version by toggling BBCode Mode, the very first button in the upper left corner of the text editor.

Now in wordpad, putting that code doesn't do anything. You can get the bold font only by pressing the correct button. I think the format is just 'stored' within the program on its own rules. I've tried that myself and I couldn't copy the formatted text either, nor access the raw version or anything like this.

That being said, that's not an issue, so it can't be 'fixed'. These are just two different things, that's why they are incompatible.
Besides, wordpad is a pretty basic program, so it also may be the cause.

There is a silly workaround though to achieve that in wordpad:
You can write the text and manually format it like this:
sig-4804546.R9HPaYo.png
and when you'll copy&paste it to forums, you'll get your desired effect:
text in here will be bold

~Though of course, it's a slower process and requires BBCode knowledge, so I'm pretty sure it's not what you want.

Other than that you could use Google Docs. It works there, I've tried that:

Copy&Paste result:

Normal

Bold

Italic

ULTRA COMBO

It seems, that underline disappears.

As for what text editors I use~
I just use the forum's text editor. That's the best way to use it efficiently. It also auto-saves your post from time to time (is that what you're looking for by using external text editors?) - it saved my walls of text many times ~ for example when the lights went out. You'll know if and when your content was saved when you'll see this:

Then, when you'll come back you can restore your content by clicking this button:

post-38649-0-14914800-1484498960.pngWARNING  Auto-save isn't available in Messenger, so your content will not be saved in private conversations.

It literally does everything I need and gives the most accurate preview, that you can ever get, so I can't really complain. If I'd like to make an additional backup of my wall of text, then I'm toggling the BBCode Mode to get the raw version of my post and just paste it to normal basic notepad - everything works perfectly that way.

Of course, the forum's text editor can be glitchy sometimes, but thanks to being able to toggle BBCode Mode, I can fix things manually.

Hope that somehow helps!  :)
