Why, and how, was "Equestria Girls" chosen as the name of the franchise?

Even though the name "Equestria Girls" was almost never used within the movies (except as titles), the name "Equestria Girls" was used both as the name of the toy franchise, and to refer to the Mane 6 (and their friend Sunset Shimmer, as in the ads' lyrics, "We are Equestria Girls").

I wonder, why did Hasbro choose the name "Equestria Girls" for that franchise, rather than some other name? And why did the Mane 5/6 not refer their own group as "Equestria Girls" (which sounds somewhat patriotic to Equestria) in the movie, not even after they became friends?

Simple marketing: MLP fans know what Equestria is, and since the characters are based off of recognizable characters from MLP, they used Equestria. The "girls" part was to convey that they were human, not ponies.

I am still a little disappointed that we never got the movie series to use that song at all.

I would have loved to have seen that.

I'd like to see them sing this song when they finally have the Human and Pony counterparts finally meet. The song itself is clearly about Equestria and the Ponies, and it'd be neat if all of the characters sang alongside their counterparts.

Yeah, it does seem odd that the only MLP animation with Equestria officially in the title is coincidently the ONLY part if the Freindship is Magic series to contain the word Equestria.

I'm guessing that they wanted to make it sound more relatable to the main show, with the significant alteration is the environment being emphasised by the girls part.

In the chapter book novelizations (done mostly by Perdita Finn), the phrase is used more often to refer to the group we Bronies call the HuMane 6.

There is an in-universe reason for why they're called the "Equestria Girls" given to us in the first book (Through the Mirror):

At the part where Rarity suggests they wear the Pony Ear headbands and tails as a sign of unity to show the Canterlot Student Body that "we may be different, but deep down, we're all Canterlot Wondercolts" this was written:

"Twilight smirked at her new friends. They all looked so much like her pony friends now. They were almost like...Equestria girls (Berrow, p.138)".
