the future is going to be amazing!

What things are you looking forward to? Tomorrow? Next year? Next decade?

My birthday is coming up and I'm realizing how different the world is than it was just 10 years ago.

In 2007 today, Portal and Team Fortress 2 had not yet been released. SpaceX, the company that landed the Falcon 9 rocket on a barge, had not yet launched the Falcon 1, and was an aerospace corporation on paper only. 3D Printing was still an infant technology. Youtube still had its original look, and Facebook had not yet been purchased by Microsoft. George W. Bush was still President of the United States.

It blows my mind how different the world could be in 2027:

The world population may yet exceed 8 billion. SpaceX may yet land humans on Mars, and Hubble will be replaced by the James Webb Space Telescope. VR headsets will replace movie theaters? Three more MLP movies due to the phenomenal success of the first one?

What are you looking forward to in the future?

Warp Drive, baby!  ...Seriously:  NASA has been doing experiments with Alcubierre's equations to see if a Star Trek-style warp drive is even possible.  Science fiction sometimes really does become science fact!  (Though I wonder if the Navigational Deflector that Star Trek has is going to be an issue IRL...?)

Can't wait til the masses wisen up and logic courses are as mandatory as math.

When VR lucid dream multiplayer internet becomes a thing.

Life extension therapies like stem cell and organ farms and reinforced limbs n such.

And extended sensory data and brain upgrades n stuff that are non-hackable and through a few generations of testings so risk of reaction or infection etc is negligible.

kinda like how flip phones are relics now? :P

on to star wars stuffs now though, appearently NASA are developing ion engines (TIE in TIE Fighter/bomber/interceptor etc. stands for twin ion engines apparently) :o

Ion engines are already in use. They're not noisy nor very powerful like in Star Wars, but engineers like them because they're nigh-unbeatable for efficiency. You could get to Pluto with a fuel tank the size of the one in your car.

But they're not practical for human passengers (yet) because that efficiency costs speed. It would take your car-tank-pluto-probe 40 years to get there.

Space and time are the same thing!

What do we want? Millicochranes!

When do we want them? Millocochranes!

Laser weapons also already exist. The hard part is making them small and hardy enough to be practical for usage.

For example, there already exist functioning magnetic railguns that can fire iron shells at speeds of 5km/s. The problem is, they take as much power as what energizes a city, to fire one shot. It's going to be a while until people can mount them to ships, let alone make them into a hand-firearm.

I meant full immersion/full dive VR.The 'graphics' would be subjective to our brains not eyes, so it might not even be graphics but concepts like an *apple* exists there, but that'd cause some subjectivity issues if gone that route I suppose. We could still see directly into our brains later anyways, bypassing the eyes, so the graphics can be far more detailed. Would probably give people a migraine processing it at first, Then withdrawal when taken off it.

woaaah so that would be hiper realistic! basically like futurama xD I dont see it by 2027 but yeah i guess its the next step once the normal VR is mastered. so exited! ♥♥♥ and scary. a black mirror episode was about this or kinda related. they were testing that technology..

What'd be scary is brains getting hacked. Or advertisements directly into your brain, how much of a nuisance would that be? Otherwise its got some great potential. It'd be safer to upgrade with cyborge eyes tho in order to see graphics and reality in more detail probably.

Bionic limbs.

Neat advancements being made with prosthetics recently due to DARPA's involvement :3

Who else instantly thought of this upon reading that comment? This game takes place in 2027

Oh that's right. There's going to be lots more "near future" sci fi movies that are suddenly going to be taking place in the past.

Personally I'm looking forward to AD 2101.

Lots more than you might think, considering the game was evidently developed as an PR campaign for DARPA.

Half Life 3, or any new game Valve is currently making (Valve is currently making 3 full sized VR games).
Continued development for VR with higher quality (4k VR? yes please).

Space travel and the advancements towards the possibility of travelling to other galaxies.

Or just science in general, it's always exciting to explore new technologies and expanding on existing tech.

It's okay, man, it's not coming.

There'll never be a VALVe game with a 3 in it D:

dude, we're talking about valve.
potentially 4 new games from them is in the works, if they don't come up with something original, then no one will.
3 complete real full games in VR and one set in the HL/Portal universe.

most likely not this year of course.

That sounds vastly optimistic, which is all fine and good,

But looking at it from the economic perspective, making games is a net loss compared to just putting all time/effort into running Steam.

So it makes practical business sense to ignore game development to focus on that.

Also, please don't call me 'dude' ^^;

well, i kinda am, since they made great games before, they can do it again.
