spoiler Anthro Characters?

So after seeing some of the new characters like Capper and the pirate captain parrot, it seems like Hasbro has introduced anthro characters into the MLP world or at least for the movie.  It just feels very odd to have regular 4 legged characters ever since season 1 and just then decide to switch it up after all that time.  Having anthro characters alongside regular 4 legged characters / animals does not really fit in my opinion into the MLP world in my opinion.

Does anybody else feel the same about the new characters being added?

Well, I dunno. I would hesitate to bring up the term "anthro."  To me anyway, anthro feels like as far bipedal as you can go. Like, take for example the Taurens of the game Warcraft, I would hesitate to call that 'anthro.' Their heads are more into their body, their legs a bit more crooked, gives them a bit more of a natural look then what I view the straight legged, more humanoid look you get when you look that term up.

Capper doesn't strike me as anymore bipedal then the Diamond Dogs, just more feline in theme.

Captain C-...uh,   Caeleano? is fully bipedal, but that seems more from virtue of her species. A harpy is going to stand on two feet anyway, right? Putting her down on all fours is just going to be outside the norm for her all the same, right? Just seems like an integral part to her character that would as just as likely happened anyway.

Are they a separate distinction from the quadrupedal forms we've gotten used to? Yeah. But to me it doesn't seem like all that much of a tonal shift since... oh... I don't know...

                       Equestria Girls?!!?

Yeah... cannon variation, sure... But who looks at a PONY show & thinks to just change something that integral? Like Jimmy Neutron getting a spinoff show of "What if theys was all haaamsters?!"

I like anthropomorphic characters and I'm glad anthros are finally joining the MLP cast! The ones I've seen so far are quite nicely designed :)

But it bothers me that anthropomorphic talking cats somehow exist in the same universe as four-legged pet cats (same for hedgehogs). This Goofy/Pluto issue is just disturbing.

I know there are some people who are uncomfortable with the idea of throwing in animals that walk on two legs, some even claiming it goes against the mythological elements of the show. But let me throw in my two cents on that:

  • The idea of walking, talking cats have been around for about as long as people knew what cats were. From the Egyptian myths of Baast to fairy tales of Puss in Boots (no, Shrek didn't make him up), it could happen.
  • I'm placing my bets on Captain Celaeno being based on the harpies (half-bird/half-woman) of Greek mythology, just with a reduced "human" vibe like MLP normally does with half-human creatures. If she weren't, they wouldn't go the extra mile of using an extra pair of claws in place of wings. Plus, she shares her name with a harpy. You can't get more direct than that.

I talked about this in more detail in another thread but yeah, even with other known characters like spike it still does feel out of place for 2 legged walking animals to be just walking around with most other species being quadruped. I think it mostly plays against the natural horse gait of the ponies establishing this to be a world of animals with human traits but then then also having others just casually running or walking around on two legs and manipulating things with "hands" seems counter the built world and how it was made to feel like sentient animals inhabit it. Its just opinion tho and do believe I would get over it very quickly. Its not something that be jarring or interrupting, just distracting if I decided to analyze it.

What you got something against 2 legged hedgehogs living in a technicolor pony world?

Ahem....*cough

Are you sure about that?

Did not really think about that.  Still though, a fair amount of dragons walk on two legs but so far in the show we have only had regular birds / cats so putting in bipedial ones seems a bit odd that they would exist together like that.

Have to say i love Capper. Also, Discord?! He's anthro. So is Tirek.

Tirek is a centaur though right?  It's been a while though so I am not 100% sure.  Discord is not really all that human like and more like a snake with legs.

Iron Will would also like to have a word with you. I'd watch out, he is brutal with words. :|

Anthro characters don't bother me at all in the type of setting that Equestria is. Since other anthro characters have existed, other ones are not too far out of the question, especxially if they go to lands we have not yet seen. Honestly seaponies would bother me far more than anthro characters ever could.

I agree with the user who said technically they are ALL anthropomorphic. Anthropomorphic just means they share human characteristics. They talk, they emote in more ways than animals in our world; they are all anthropomorphic.Perhaps a better question would be concerning bipedal animals? But then again, there have been bipedal animals in the show since ep 1 (Hi Spike). I don't see the big deal.

I think a lot of people here are getting anthro confused with biped.

Not the same thing.

Yeah, a sudden anthropomorph seems out of place to me too.

But maybe they're warming us up to the idea so they can use Catrina in the show.

Capper even has vaguely similar colors to her... http://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/mylittleponyg1/images/7/77/Catrina.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20140112082134

I do think Dr. Wolf will be happy! XD

He's not the only random anthro anymore.

Hmmm... I wonder what Fluttershy with think of him...

I wonder what he'd think of Rarity's cat Opal? XD

Technically, the characters have always been anthro.

Indeed true, but when generally referring to "humanoid" animals, people do have differing opinions as to where between them that "anthro" title lies.

Most will say smack dab in zone "3" and "4" only counts as anthro but there are many who will include "2" as well.

But for this discussion I think its more semantics and just refers to characters that primarily walk on their hind legs and manipulate objects with their forepaws (hands).

hi guys. well tbh the anthro thing has been around the whole time in MLP because of Spike. hes an anthro dragon, but i want to draw attention to Capper, as it looks like we're getting a Gen 1 revamp on species again.

Anthro cats existed in gen 1 in the form of Catrina

whom Capper really resembles. So i'll be interested to see what his role is. It looks like Capper is a Pirate, I'm assuming its a band of Pirates in the film, but Catrina is a Witch, so maybe Capper has some powers?

(edited)

I wouldn't really call most of them anthropomorhic animals. They need to have some physical, human-like characteristics to make them so. Otherwise, they're just talking, societally advanced animals.

A cartoon cow with hands instead of front hooves is an example of anthropomorphic. A cow who has four hooves, wears clothes and talks is not.
