What if Starswirl returned as the threat?

While (re)watching the Ah! My Goddess movie, I got to thinking- would it be an epic twist if, like Celestine (the mentor in the movie), Starswirl returned and used his (fan-labeled goddesses) pupils, Celestia and Luna (Belldandy, in the movie) as puppets to start a rebellion against the higher order's agenda (gods, in the movie), which could be- I dunno, the Tree of Harmony, or some other, absolute higher power than it. I think it would be quite interesting to see Twilight have to see Starswirl as something other than the magnificent mage she put on a pedestal her whole life, and have to put feelings aside to be able to stop him.

What do you guys think?

Not exactly a fan of this idea, simply because it is a tad cliche. The idolized legend turning out to be an enemy, I don't think I have ever liked it. Now if he was being controlled somehow by some kind of force then I could roll with it, but not him just being evil out of the blue. I want to see his good side!

Well I know one way this could work of having Starswirl as a threat! His spirit getting unleashed because of a spell going horribly wrong! He's only a threat cause he's not meant to be in that world anymore and needs to return to rest!

not saying he has to come back bad just to be bad. In the movie I referred to, the mentor, Celestine, did it out of good intent (which was, that he tried to rebel against the god's agenda, and basically hit fast forward on all of earthling's "evolution", to develop their emotions of love to a degree where they wouldn't have to undergo the god's trials and be separated forever from the ones they truly love, when their hearts aren't in sync) It could be interesting if Twilight, at first, also agreed with Starswirl's intentions (unlike Starlight's), and joined his cause, to raise the stakes of there being little hope to defeat not just Starswirl, but Celestia/ Luna, and Twilight, and pitting the remane 5 against their friends and Equestria's leader to set things straight.

I have heard one cool idea where SStB was 'trapped' in a time loop or another dimension by Discord ... gets released ... and doesn't believe Discord is redeemed and kinda is an antagonist of sorts until he comes around.

I actually do kinda like the idea of Starswirl being an antagonist of sorts. I mean Celestia said that he didn't understand friendship like Twilight did by the end of MMC, so having Twilight face off against him could showcase how much she has grown sense episode one.

-We could have an epic confrontation similar to what has transpired in S02 of Wakfu.

-Or we could just end up with another befriended powerful unicorn ex-villain.

One of those options is an impossible event. There's only so many ways one can flip a pony and we've done a whole lot of flipping. It is time to stop.

There is a third option though: for Plot Swirl the Most Used to play the role of Deckard Cain. Unfortunately, that too is likely an impossible event.

Theres a similer story to that called "A Little Loopy" in which Sweetie Belle is trapped in a time loop. Things happen, and it is later revealed Starswirl is also trapped within it, and was the one who trapped Sweetie in it, in hope to escape by trapping her in his place. I won't say how in ends just in case somepony wants to check it out, but it is worth a read.

I think it would be interesting. Nothing is better than your favorite idol fallen into the dark side. As long he got a really good reason for it or blinded and controlled.

They could do it like Nozdormu and have His "current" self helping the mane six defeat his future "Evil" self.

Kind of sad that he's probably not going to be in the movie like the original Script called for. we could have gotten some SERIOUS lore exploration if they didn't decide to dial back the continuity hardcore :(

I can imagine it. More so as a reencarnation or delayed personality implantation/possession gone arry.

So he's back, but not quite himself.

Like Star Trek 3, when Spock's spirit was trapped in Bone's mind.

I had my laptop stolen last Spring & lost my pony stories, ICR the story.  However, I remember Twilight was writing Trixie for advice on the Alicorn Amulet. Trixie advised against researching it in the strongest possible terms -said it would corrupt her.  Concluded the letter with "You have dreamed of meeting Starswhirl.  I could not swear to it, but I have picked up hints in my travels and I am morally certain you have met Starswhirl.  You called him Sombra"

That's a neat idea. Sombra's backstory is outlined pretty well in the comics, but whether that's canon or not is debatable. After so many years of people saying Star Swirl is Discord I think that reveal could be made into a worthwhile surprise twist. Misdirecting ponies in your story should be fun too, Discord would love that. He wouldn't outright say he was or wasn't something, but I could see him drop hints for his own twisted amusement.

That would be a pretty redundant cliché seeing as other media have used that idea countless times over the ages, and both the show and comics have depicted him as being stern but kind, very eccentric, a little on the insane side, and a wise teacher who has seen things very few can claim as having seen themselves. While Star Swirl had his one flaw in that he didn't understand friendship most likely because of what happened between him and Celestia, I wouldn't see it as the catalyst that drove him to becoming evil and pretending he was still good.

I'd welcome this if he'd show up and just completely wipe the floor with all four Princesseses...es...

Thematically we need a wake up call like tirek was. :)

Though a small part of me wants him to stay away...he's so handy to use as a plot device xD
