Art trade with unsatisfied artist

Ok, so ....I got myself into an art trade with a fellow pony artist over on dA, when they came to me first, originally asking if I could just draw their pony. It was me who suggested an art trade after seeing their style. But Once I finished drawing my piece (they claim they're still working on their half of the trade), and posting it, this person sends a private message saying that they're unhappy with the piece and that I got the characters' personality wrong. So I'm debating on whether i should start up a new piece, or tell the user to be happy with it, since it was they who originally came to me with the request in the first place. What should I do?

Since your not being paid commission for your work, the artistic direction is totally up to you. Tell them to be happy with it, if you yourself feel like you have the time and the personnel wants to redo it, then redo it.

Don't let someone who's come to you asking for an art trade, for free, dictate how you do things :)

I'm really more worried about them not keeping their part of the trade (it's so damn hard to get anyone to draw a toyline exclusive pony) if they're unhappy with their request. I mean, though I might as well be screwed anyway, having already put the effort into doing my part of it, and not getting anything in return.

and no, I'd really rather not do it over. I feel she should be happy with what was done, and any lack of consistency with her character is her fault for not informing me of the personality beforehand.

:( That sucks, I hope they come through. If you put your foot down and try talking to them about their half of the deal do you think they'll give you the other half? For the future, you could consider holding your half until you've both Finished!

I sure hope so. Though considering how life enjoys screwing me, I wouldn't doubt it, either. I sent them a private message (as politely as I'm in the mood for) asking them as to why they didn't include the information when they initially made the request. I'll try to ease into asking them if they think its fair for me to redo it, given that omission of it on their part. Fingers crossed it doesn't turn out ugly.

I kinda feel I should get two pieces of art, if I do wind up redoing theirs, but that's neither here nor there. Just awfully shitty of her to be unhappy with the first piece.
