If you could choose which era or year to be born in, what would you choose?

Me personally I'd choose to be born in the glorious and powerful empire of Rome in its golden years(around 117 AD) when Romes territories were at its peak and it had full control of every territory it held.

or alternatively...

I'd love to be born in between the Victorian and the Edwardian eras. I both love the cars and the beautiful houses the era had going for it and the decor and the dresses and suits, etc. Those eras together were from 1837 to 1910.

What about you though? Which year or era would you choose to live in if you had the chance?

I'm pretty happy with being born in this era honestly. Sure it's not perfect, but it's so much better than the alternatives. Like, we got things like electricity, indoor plumbing, medicine and the internet.

The era/year that I was born in. The past has some, shall we say, problems, and the future seems as if it's going down the same path.

Currently, we're neither at war nor cleaning up after one, and that's good enough for me.

I would stay in this era since I'm content with how things are. I'm a really big history buff and my favourite era is around 1890-1945, but I wouldn't want to live then. Many things have progressed lots since then and have increased the quality of life lots. Health is the most notable one to me. The average lifespan back then was notably less than it is now, since they weren't as knowledgeable on the subject as we are now. That is only one of the examples as to why I wouldn't want to live in my favourite era. There are some advantages of living then, such as a simpler lifestyle, but in the long term, I would miss all of the advantages of living in the present. If I could just visit for a while, then I would go to the early 20th century.

It's hard to say as this current era has really shaped who I am as a person, and if I were to be born at a different period of time, whether it be in the distant past or the distant future, I could be basically unrecognizable.

So far I am pretty okay with being born in the era I was.

However If I could chose, living in a future with significantly more advanced space travel, and medicine would be nice.

I would go with medieval era, renaissance era, victorian era, 20's-40's/50ish+ ("jazz" era).

I would want to be born in the mid 50's. That way I would be old enough to drive the cool cars when they come out in the late 60's and early 70's, but then again, i can get all those cars now, so this era is pretty good for me.

Either roughly 8000 years ago( predating the first modern society and reinstatement of physical objectivity) or I would highly follow suit, or maybe I am trying to pin point when grecco roman wrestling first peaked, and I would say probably 500-600 BC. alternatively.

I'm fine living in this era, but to actually contribute to the thread, I've always had an interest in the 1880-1925 era. I'd be lying if I said it wasn't to help out with my writing. I'm working on stuff involving silent films, WWI, and the Russian Revolution of 1917. Seeing them in person or hearing about them from people involved would help me out with the stories, I think.

I would like to have been born in the 1970s, a decade before the one I was actually born in, just to see what it would have been like living in the age of disco.

Rethinking my original response, I realized that the future could be a good bit darker than today (which is a decent possibility considering the deranged maniac elected president of the United States...). I already ruled out any time in the past because of discrimination. So maybe when I was would be optimal after all, though it is still a bad time. I would probably have been executed for heresy (or something ridiculous) if I lived before the 17th century or so. Would be a useless sponge until the 1980's. Would have been belittled more than I have been about my sexual orientation (most people IRL don't know my gender identity.). So, yeah, I guess 1997 was okay.

Most likely this one. I would say the future but at this point I am not sure how long into the future the human race will last at this rate. Also this era is filled to the brim with dumb and horrible people, no doubt, but everything earlier just gets worse and worse. Health problems out the wazoo, death everywhere depending on location, and I would be even more useless in the older eras than I am now and that is a feat.

I am happy with my era in terms of quality of life, technological progress, etc. The only thing i don't like about my era is the cancerous cultural and political aspects of it. I wish American culture was more like what was seen in the 70's and 80's. That was when music was great and actually original and not this uninspired, processed garbage that it is today not to mention that back then our cultural icons where actual human beings and not the annoying disgraces such as the Kardashians and Miley Cyrus. In short 20th century American Culture = <3 21st Century American Culture = :(

Quality of life is great but i feel your pain when you state that this era is filled to the brim with stupidity.

Life in preceding eras was more objective in a less objective way, not less stupidity, stupidity stems from people that trust misinterpreted history in a westerners world, aka, outright misinformation.... but life was much more simple, and your responsibility and duty to society was inherent... people believe they would be more useless, because they arent focusing on the positive aspects of it...

I wish I was born in 1976 because I want to experience the 80s. Of course someone would say that they would want to be born on 1980 but you don't really remember anything until you're like 5 or something. So I want to start the 80s at the age of 6 or 5 where you can truly have strong memories.

I would not choose even a second earlier. Sure I have much appreciation for culture from the past - the pop/rock/soul/folk music of the 1960s/70s and the classical music of the 18th century and before, but I could not live in those times. Women's opportunities to play wind instruments were extremely limited in the past. And there's also the fact that there are large orchestras in Europe that did not let women play in them until the mid 2000s. Wish I was joking, but I'm not. My aims are not to be professional, but I do not want to live in those times, when women were not allowed to perform in orchestra because they were too distracting to men who can not control their sexuality. Of course, it goes well beyond music, the problems being a woman in these times. I want nothing of it. Then we go into discussions of my sexuality. Then there's also the fact that the church ruled everything and at some eras made it a crime to not believe, and being an atheist, I can not stand that.

Plus, there is the fact that in this era, I can listen to all of the music I enjoy of those earlier eras. If I actually lived back in the 1960s and 70s I would not be aware of a great portion music of the music I am today, and it would be much harder to listen to when I want to, because of no MP3 players, computers, etc. And if I lived in the 18th century or before, I would most likely never come even come across the composers and their music that I love.

I'd say that I want to be born in the future. However, nothing can be properly assumed about the future. No guarantee of more progressive policies and people, for example. I mean, look who got elected as president of the USA. That only makes the future more scary.

Plus, the climate is going haywire. Back when I was a kid, we had winters. Now we do not. I fear to think about what it would be like in the future where I live. I imagine that the winter will be entirely 60s/70s/80s with some 90s at the rate we're going.

Past eras weren't that great if you're a girl. If I could be rich, with permanent excellent health, I wouldn't mind living in Victorian England. I think it would be better to look toward the future though. Maybe a couple hundred years ahead would be a good place to settle.

we were talking about this last night at home. Mostly that I wish I had been old enough to enjoy the 80s music life. I'm very drawn to Punk and Punk rock/pop. I wouldnt have gone for the mohawks and piercings look, but everything else looked great fun.

Then I'd also be happy with the opposite, I'd have wanted to live in the early 20th Century. Wealthy family in the 20s - 40s would have been fun and lovely. As well as maybe wanting to have had a normal life in the country on a farm or something. No cars, just bikes, horses and walking. Plus the weather was more set back before the whole global warming crap. Long hot summers were regular as well as snowy winters. Its very rare that we get anything like that anymore here in the UK. its usual grey and wet.
