Character Tournament 2017

Do you guys like voting? Well, I sure do, so I've decided to host a double-elimination tournament in order to decide who the best characters are! Only characters from the main series are included, and only if they have a speaking role.

I've run a similar tournament before, with 64 characters, between Season 2 and Season 3. This taught me a few things that I'll use to hopefully make this contest even better. I'm also using parts of the previous results to create some seeding (that one was with random seeding, which wasn't ideal). There is one notable change to the traditional double-elimination format: The winner of the winners finals will be #1, and the winner of the losers bracket will be #2 (no grand finals, since chances are we'd just end up with the same two characters facing each other again).

Oh, and I've decided to skip the mane 6 this time, partly because there have already been so many polls with them, and partly because they tend to steamroll most matchups.

You're only allowed to vote once per round, even if you have multiple accounts. In order to reduce the risk of cheating, I will only accept votes from users with a minimum of 5 posts.

Just a heads up that I intend to start this soon, so if you want to nominate some of the last five characters, you should do so soon. If you don't I will assign them myself (I don't blame you if you don't, most of these will likely be knocked out early anyway).

Since this is the first round and many of these matchups are likely to be steamrolls I will try to get it over with fairly quickly, so expect Losers Round 1 to start in a few days (to reduce the sheer number of contestants). If you want to vote in this round I recommend you do it sooner rather than later.

In case of ties, I will award the win to whichever character I didn't vote for. This essentially makes my vote worth a little less than the average vote, which I believe is a good way to help ensure that the fairness of the competition.

My votes:

Discord - Should be obvious.

Filthy Rich - Filthy Rich provides a much needed contrast to Diamond Tiara (at least prior to her "redemption"), and he's also quite likable. Silver Spoon, meanwhile, has mostly been Diamond Tiara's sidekick.

Soarin - I find Soarin slightly more funny than Night Glider.

Goldie Delicious - Can't say I care much for either of these two, but Goldie Delicious was at least a little funny. I don't remember Party Favor doing all that much?

Cheese Sandwich - He's funny.

Cranky Doodle Donkey - He provides more opportunities for comedy than Moon Dancer does.

Tirek - I barely remember Sherif Silverstar. Tirek was a threat.

Tree Hugger - Mayor Mare is fairly generic, while Tree Hugger is fairly unique (she's the only hippie MLP character).

Queen Chrysalis - Starstreak, one of the designers in "Honest Apple", didn't really stand out to me.

Igneous Rock Pie -  He's interesting and I hope they'll use him more.

Sunburst - He's kind of awkward, but in a good way.

Vapor Trail - She reminds me a bit of Fluttershy, if Fluttershy were a pegasus... Wait, Fluttershy is a pegasus. Um, if Fluttershy were good at flying and interested in becoming a Wonder Bolt, I suppose?

Zecora - I actually liked Strawberry Sunrise from when she mocked Applejack, and strawberries are better than apples, but Zecora is the more developed character. I hope Strawberry Sunrise gets a better matchup in the Losers bracket (assuming she doesn't somehow beat Zecora).

Cloudy Quartz - I guess?

Minuette - "Colgate" was a surprisingly fun character, and I hope we get to see her again.

Quibble Pants - Oh, this matchup is unfortunate. I would have liked to see Diamond Tiara at least go to Round 2, but Quibble Pants had such nice interactions with Rainbow Dash so I feel like I really should vote for him. Oh well.

Scootaloo - Well, yeah.

Gilda - Braeburn seemed rather generic.

Silver Shill - I guess? Trouble Shoes is interesting in theory, but the execution isn't the best.

Windy Whistles - Rainbow Dash's mother is pretty interesting.

Princess Cadance - Clearly.

Lyra Heartstrings - For episode 100. She's also a pretty good rock.

Shining Armor - I suppose.

Wind Rider - Mostly because I don't like Babs Seed.

Apple Bloom - Yeah.

Countess Coloratura - She stands out more.

Sassy Saddles - An antagonist that's actually pretty relatable? Not bad.

Bow Hothoof - Go Rainbow Dash's dad!

Cheerilee - She's very likable.

Bon Bon/Sweetie Drops - I don't really like Pipsqueak that much, and Bon Bon the secret agent? Cool stuff.

Granny Smith - She's probably one of the funniest Apples.

Steven Magnet - I guess?

Princess Luna - She's awesome.

Twist - I didn't like Ms. Harswhinny, so Twist?

Mane-iac - Amusing villain.

Gizmo - This nerdy pony is somewhat amusing.

Maud Pie - She's one of the best. So funny.

Iron Will - He's quite a character, all right. Octavia is nice and all, though I think as an actual character in the show Iron Will is stronger.

Starlight Glimmer - She's awesome.

Saffron Masala - Fun episode, and Little Strongheart didn't really stand out.

Princess Celestia - Inky Rose, the goth designer, wasn't bad, but she's not Celestia.

Snails - He slightly beats Bulk Biceps thanks to his buck ball skills.

Spoiled Rich - Thorax is more likable, but not that interesting. Spoiled Rich is not likable, but adds quite a lot to the show. Perhaps Thorax will grow in future episodes, but for now I'm voting for Spoiled Rich.

Sky Stinger - A confident flyer that's not actually as good as he thinks he is? That's interesting.

Trixie - Great and Powerful!

Limestone Pie - She may seem angry, but she's actually pretty sweet, underneath her rock hard exterior. Or at least I assume so.

A. K. Yearling - I like the spa ponies, mostly because they're funny in the background in earlier seasons. Visual comedy! But the mind behind Daring Do is more of a character.

Gladmane - He may seem friendly, but he's actually pretty bad... And likable. I doubt we'll see him again though.

Sweetie Belle - Yeah.

Garble - I didn't like Ms. Peachbottom.

Dr. Caballeron - Double Diamond didn't really stand out to me.

Princess Ember - The diamond dogs were funnier, but Ember is more of an actual character. Also, the diamond dogs were mainly funny thanks to Rarity's whining.

Big McIntosh - Eeyup.

Time Turner - Episode 100 was great, and he was one of the best ones in it.

Spitfire - Yup.

Coriander Cumin - I liked him. Nightmare Moon is rather generic, and barely a separate character.

Spike - Of course.

Gabby - Snails is better than Snips anyway.

Fancy Pants - Probably the best of the posh ponies.

Angel Wings - She's a fan, I guess?

Derpy - Feather Bangs wasn't as likable as Derpy.

Marble Pie - Mr. Cake hasn't been very funny.

Pouch Pony - His reaction to Pinkie describing Maud's anger was really funny.

Ahuizotl - King Sombra didn't really do much.

Do you guys like voting? Well, I sure do, so I've decided to host a double-elimination tournament in order to decide who the best characters are! Only characters from the main series are included, and only if they have a speaking role.

I've run a similar tournament before, with 64 characters, between Season 2 and Season 3. This taught me a few things that I'll use to hopefully make this contest even better. I'm also using parts of the previous results to create some seeding (that one was with random seeding, which wasn't ideal). There is one notable change to the traditional double-elimination format: The winner of the winners finals will be #1, and the winner of the losers bracket will be #2 (no grand finals, since chances are we'd just end up with the same two characters facing each other again).

Oh, and I've decided to skip the mane 6 this time, partly because there have already been so many polls with them, and partly because they tend to steamroll most matchups.

You're only allowed to vote once per round, even if you have multiple accounts. In order to reduce the risk of cheating, I will only accept votes from users with a minimum of 5 posts.

I disagree. This is a thread where we vote for and talk about characters in the show. When I look at Sugarcube Corner it mostly seems to be meta talk, like "Do you watch the show with your family", or Which YouTubers do you watch", or "Embarrassing Brony Moments". In Show Discussion you find threads like "Your Favorite Episode" (which is even stickied!) "Why Spike is the best character in the entire series!", and similar threads. There even is a thread called "Your favourite pony and why?", and it's a megathread! Clearly, it makes more sense for this thread to belong to Show Discussion rather than Sugarcube Corner, and it will be more clear in later rounds where matchups are longer (I expect people will be more willing to motivate their votes when they aren't voting for a ton of matchups at the same time). I worry that if it's in Sugarcube Corner then fewer people will find it, since

"All pony talk that doesn't directly have to do with Friendship is Magic belongs here. Fandom discussions, merchandise, meetups -- you name it!"

This thread is not for fandom discussions, and it most definitely isn't related to merchandise or meetups.

Show Discussion description:

"Bronies come from all walks of life, but most of us have one thing in common: we enjoy the lovable TV show My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Most discussions about it belong here, whether you're speculating about the next episode, dissecting a character's personality or discussing aspects of the vast world of Equestria."

This thread is related to FiM, the show, not the fandom, or merchandise, or meetups, or fansongs, fanart, or fanfic, or anything like that. It is directly related to the show, where we can vote and talk about various characters. Sure, we don't speculate about future episodes, but "dissecting a character's personality"? Totally doable in this thread!

Unless I'm missing something I believe I've made a good case for why this thread should be in "Show Discussion", so it would be nice if you or some other moderator would move it back. Thanks in advance.

With all this being said, I do encourage discussion/talking about characters in this thread, actually. You could just vote and do nothing else if you wish, of course, but it would also be nice to see some discussion (and analyses, perhaps) about the various characters. I suspect we might see some more of that in later rounds, round 1, like in most tournaments with a seeding system, isn't terribly exiting. I would like at least one more vote before updating though.

I would like to move on to round 2 soon, but I would also like at least one more vote before we do. Round 1 is probably the least interesting round, with a large quantity of one-sided matchups, and losers round 1 is even worse, with a bunch of low-quality characters. On the up-side, most of those will be gone once this round is over.

I wanted to get Round 1 over with quickly, in order to get rid of some weaker characters. This, unfortunately, lead to each round being super long, which I fear intimidated people, and it also discouraged discussion and reflection. From now on I will only handle 8 matchups at the same time (at most). This should make it easier to vote and it should encourage some more discussion.

Discord – Filthy Rich is okay, but he's not Discord.

Soarin – Party Favor really didn't leave much of an impresson on me.

Cheese Sandwich – He's a lot of fun, and being voiced by Weird Al makes him even more interesting. Moon Dancer? Eh, I liked Minuette better.

Tree Hugger – Manipulative Tirek was interesting, brute Tirek was generic. Tree Hugger? Kind of funny, and I'd like to see her again. Brute Tirek? Eh. Manipulative Tirek could be fun, though.

Queen Chrysalis – Her Cadance impression was quite interesting, and Sapphire Shores is kind of a B-lister.

Pass – I like both Sunburst and Vapor Trail. I might edit in a vote later, but for now I find it really hard to choose.

Zecora – Thunderlane wasn't that interesting.

Quibble Pants – Would I have voted for him over Minuette? I don't know, I like both. Dr. Faunta, meanwhile, hasn't left much of an impression on me.
